The Raiders will introduce new G.M. Reggie McKenzie on Tuesday. Already, however, McKenzie reportedly is tackling one of the most pressing challenges of his new position.
Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that McKenzie is contemplating whether to retain coach Hue Jackson.
We’ve previously reported that Jackson could indeed be fired, that McKenzie will have the power to do so in his contract, and that McKenzie and Jackson would be engaging in conversations regarding the future of the franchise.
The fact that agent Kennard McGuire represents both men could help smooth over any rough edges and get McKenzie and Jackson on the same page. Still, McKenzie may want his own coach -- and McKenzie may decide that Jackson’s brash (especially recently) style may not comply with the example set by the high-profile employees at McKenzie’s former employer, the Green Bay Packers. Moreover, the situation that unfolded in Kansas City during the 2011 season, with G.M. Scott Pioli and coach Todd Haley reportedly butting heads on a consistent basis, underscores the importance of the G.M. and head coach having a good relationship.
It has been suggested that McKenzie may want to hire Packers assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach Winston Moss.
In the days following the passing of owner Al Davis, a coaching change was unthinkable. Now that McKenzie has been given the reins of the football operation, anything can happen. Until McKenzie declares that Jackson will indeed be back in 2012, an ouster of Jackson remains possible.
