@caveman, you are bolstering a point that needs no proving. if a team goes this long without a playoff appearance- there are some bad things going on there. the coaching carousel has destroyed the chances for anykind of drafting strategy to get put in place.
Last year is my point. and last years sucess is inarguable draft wise.
Marcell Dareus- 3rd overall
Aaron Williams- 34th overall
Kelvin Sheppard- 68th
Da'Norris Searcy-100th
Chris Hairston- 122nd
Johnny White- 133rd
Chris White- 169th
Justin Rogers- 206th
Michael Jasper- 245th

Dareus, Williams, Sheppard, Searcy, Hairston all showed great strides this year. Dareus especially, Aaron Williams played well at corner, Sheppard great start at LB- Searcy was good at times but hard to grasp when Buff has good safeties- and Hairston stepped in bigtime on the o-line.
Johnny White did as well as any draftee could do considering the bills RB situation. Then you have the Jasper situation- this dude is huge, and is loaded with potential, and may end up at o-line. there is plenty of reason to see a new direction .

@stanmark,
Read the following review from www.coldhardfootballfacts.com:
------------
Draft Grade - 2001 - 2010

Buffalo (C )
Pro Bowlers: 6 (t-16th)
Draftees Active in 2010: 42 (t-9th)
Players with 50+ Career AV: 3 (t-13th)
Players with 20+ Career AV: 17 (t-14th)
Best Pick: DT Kyle Williams (5th round, 2006)
Worst Pick: LB Aaron Maybin (No. 11 overall, 2009)

Summary: The Bills had seven picks in the top 13 in the decade, none of which have turned out to be stars. Considering the extent to which they rely on the draft, they do very little draft-day maneuvering and choose instead to stay where they are and try to fill their needs. Judging by their year-in, year-out mediocrity, it's not working so great – which could be why they just fired lead scout Tom Modrak. The Bills have put some nice building blocks in place, but not much on top.
------------

My view is that when you also add to this list the number of draftees no longer with the team, it's even more futile: Whitner, Posluzny, McGahee, Maybin, Jason Peters, Nate Clements, Kevin Everett (I count him because he was riding the bench when his accident occured), Lee Evans, Losman, Edwards, Antoine Winfield,..etc... Then add washed up busts that they signed: Marcus Stroud, Terrell Owens, other d-linemen etc...and it's a disgusting display of mismanagement.

I'm reading the comments and I really feel like some Bills fans are deluding themselves regarding the current talent. I don't care if the Bills caught the Patriots sleeping at the wheel early this season. They did the same thing years ago with a season-opening 31-0 win only to lose by that exact same score at the end of the season. The Bills do NOT have NFL-caliber talent. The only players capable of starting on other teams in the division are: Fred Jackson, Marcel Dareus, Nick Barnett, Kyle Williams and maybe CJ Spiller (although he still has a lot to prove). At the beginning of the season, the Bills benefitted from teams not having had training camps so our defense was opportunistic and our offense which is built on trickery (screens, dumps etc...) was very successful. Once teams got their legs under them, the Bills fell apart at the seams. The Jets game exposed the Bills and they were never the same after that. I LOVE the Bills but I HATE the current roster. it killed me when we beat the Broncos in a meaningless game for us. it meant dropping that much further in the draft. There was no benefit to winning the game after losing 7 straight! How could we have the longest playoff drought AND the least amount of quality first rounders on the team? Most of our first round picks are out of the league, on the bench or on other teams. Cast aside Dareus and Aaron Williams (who rode the bench for much of the year) and the next ones are Spiller and McElvin, bench players? Explain that to me?????

caveman, im no fanatic, but its easy to see the bills are headed in the right direction. last season they bolstered the 2nd most injuries in the league. their new qb became absolutely handcuffed after loosing all but one WR out of his corps. Then he lost his all-star RB, after the o-line was going nuts with injuries.
i would point out that last years draft for the bills has turned out to be a raving success. lots of good talent that is staying. a couple FA moves later in the season showed the rest of the league that at least the bills front office cared...

One other thing: The Bills are not like Detroit right now. Detroit has, in addition to a strong running game, a top tier 1st round caliber QB (Buffalo does not), a top tier wideout (Buffalo does not), a strong defensive front line with high draft picks and young / in-their-prime D-linemen - Think Suh, Fairley, Van Den Bosh. I hope Kyle Williams can bounce back but, aside from him and Dareus, we have too many defensive holes to fill. On offense,...I am not convinced that our wideouts are NFL-starter caliber. Stevie Johnson is a GREAT #2 wideout but is not #1 caliber,...yet to keep him, Buffalo will have to pay him like one. It's very frustrating to watch because I've been expecting a return to greatness since Jim Kelly left. I don't see it happening anytime soon and it hurts to see Detroit, Houston, San Fran and others get there before us. We've had ample opportunity to draft the players and keep good players.

I'm also a lifelong Bills fan and I don't see how Buddy thinks the Bills will be any closer to making the playoffs next year. I've been watching this debacle for decades now: sign second tier coaches without proven track records, let top talent go once they are eligible for new contracts, sign over-rated/ over-the-hill talent to sell tickets and draft reaches rather than studs every year. The data suggests that the Bills draft record is at or near the bottom over the past decade. We draft players above their ranking instead of trading down for them or using the pick for known entities. They then either flame out or end up leaving because they want more money. I'm convinced the team will not improve until 1.) Ralph Wilson is gone (guys I love the man for keeping the Bills in Buffalo but he has not invested like others do to win) and 2.) They move to a city that players want to live in.

so lets get this straight gmen. you want to harp on someone for commenting about mountains near buffalo? have you ever said anything that has been PROVEN false? have you ever had anyone put up a top 10 list of how dumb you are? i seem to remember... ah yes. its a classic showing of your idiocy. keep in mind, while you try and make this personal, im in 75 degree weather today, on the water ;)
but what you put up there while you troll bills stories time after time is completely false, im temped to let your idiocy live on while everyone around you makes fun of you behind your back… but what the hey… lets look back at how dumb you are: 10 Diff ways:
Top 10 DUMB/IDIOTIC "points" from Gmen.:
1. “The Bills get a $800,000 per game payment from Erie County. That is welfare.”
well, no, no they dont get 800k from erie county, thats actually false, however, over half the teams in the NFL receive taxpayer subsidies. welfare????
2. “Name a team other than the Bills that collect welfare payments? Only New Orleans Saints get welfare. ”
lol. now that you outed your moronic definition of “welfare”, i guess you must hate your own team as well.
3. “Soon they will be the San Antontio Bills.”
lol. i think this speaks for itself. what a knob.
4. “Mind explaining how the Bills are in the 10 most profitable NFL team list when they have the cheapest NFL tickets and little revenue from corporate suites?”
yep, we covered that as well, you abandoned it because you realized your ignorance.
5. ““Green Bay and Chicago have worse weather that Buffalo.””
LOL, !!!! couldnt have been more wrong again there.
6. “If the Bills are so wealthy, then why do they have the fewest home games of any team in the NFL?”
false again, proven wrong on multiple levels lol. how horribly ignorant.
7. “They are bottom feeders (sort of like a lot of people in Buffalo).”
Welfare rates higher in your NJ home than in Buffalo.
8. “The City of Buffalo and Erie County were so incompetent that the state of New York had to take over both of their finances.”
we all see a pattern here. you merely make up BS and move on to the next point that is made up. thats not how it works lil guy.
9. “If the area fans cannot support a team (without welfare payments), then that team should move to a city that will”
well, a simple lookback shows the BUF fanbase as one of the stongest in attendance over the last 15 years. even when they are blacked out they have nearly the equivalent #’s as 50% of the league stadiums.
10. “The Giants and Jets playing in New Jersey is no different than the Buffalo Bills not playing in Buffalo.”
my favorite here. nope. its not the same. your jersey logic is laughable, and demonstrated by this top 10 list. this is a sick burn on your intelligence.

haha look at gmen, still cant keep up with everyone calling him out. so he still picks up whichever points he thinks he can win. (ie mountains)
who cares?
you say whatever you want about the city of buffalo, they still house a top 10 most profitable football franchise according to forbes. you can bust on the fans, but they still have top 10 attendance over the worst performing decade of nearly any nfl team. they have the worst weather city in the league but still have better attendance than most.
and crime rate?? lol are you saying buffalo has a higher crime rate than any other nfl city? nope, you dont have the mental capacity to go there.
so then, when all else fails, you go back to the win loss record of the bills and how bad they are. like the fans can change this, or like it is somehow the fans fault. good lord you are a sad case gmen. people (normal ones) dont just hop on a winning teams bandwagon (hard for you to understand) the fact that the bills still have more loyal fans than most teams in the league speaks volumes. anything else or are you still trolling your idiocy everywhere?

I guess Gmen the genius couldn’t read the correction to the Appalachians. He wants ME to get my GED? I’m probably old enough to be his daddy(although way to smart), and I’ve no doubt lost more brain cells in the last 5+ decades than he started out with. BTW, crack is a NY thing. Maybe look at a map ignorami and see all those beautiful mountains less than an hour south of Bflo. Maybe google Holiday Valley. One last note, when I was a kid I grew up near UB in the city, and we used to go up there to laugh at all the ugly NY chicks who wore overall jeans and cokebottle glasses, acne scarred skin. It was a running joke in the neighborhood. Funny none of the other Bills have a problem with the area. Many move back here after their careers are over, as do the hockey players. Psst….this is where Yankee great Joe McCarthy lived after he retired from the Yanks as a HOF manager. Scotty Bowman too. Harry Neal of hockey night in Canada too. Not to mention half all the NY’ers who graduated from UB. Still Bermans favorite place, but McGahee trumps them all, right? Time for Wapner, Gmen.

=================================
Goobs, you can't see any mountains from that dump you call Buffalo unless you consider some of those snowdrifts, mountains. Otherwise almost everything is flat.

It's not just athletes that want to leave that dump that is Buffalo and western NY, it's also the general population as well. The population of western NY has decreased for 4 decades in a row. Who could blame those people.

Goobs, the crime rate of Buffalo is also 270% higher than in New York. Keep up your delusional ramblings. All that matters is that the Bills still suck after years of suckage.

Stop crying... we had a really fun run in the beginning of the year that none of us were expecting. I got to see the Bills stick it to the Pats, in the flesh, after years over living over there in Bahstan. Wouldn't trade that for anything.

Yes, we have a lack of depth, as rebuilding teams typically do. Buddy's doing a good job. A good draft this year, perhaps a trade and a FA pickup or two, and we could be in serious business.

Gmen 1987…its about 45 miles south of Buffalo, and called the Adirondacks. The foothills are about 18 miles south and called the Boston hills. People flock from Toronto, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other locales to ski here as there are many resorts for that. I’d love to know what McGahee is doing in Denver that he couldn’t in Bflo.

Goobs,

The Adirondacks are no where near Buffalo. Put down the crackpipe and get your GED. Doesn't matter what hills are south of Buffalo, Buffalo is still flat.

So is the area the giants play in. In fact most of east jersey is a dump. And so is NYC and Troy and Hudson Amd orange county. In fact if you don’t live in the adirondacks all of new York is a dump so im sure where you live is too. Buffalo may not be an attractive city but it has solid people. The city itself is hit hard bye poor economics and and ever increasing “dependency on modern technology”. NYC is just as nasty with it’s garbage and homeless and fat cats stickin up there noses yuppy cocaine addicted scum elitist hissidics. East jersey where the giants play is filled with well people who wish they lived in NYC. Bc driving through western Ny is so bad who wants to see beautiful mts. And quaint village towns anyway.

==================================
Goobs,

Solid people, Buffalo has one of the highest crime rates in the nation and is much higher than New York City.

Where are the mountains around Buffalo that you speak of Goobs? Buffalo is in a flat area. Buffalo has tons of abandoned buildings left behind by people that wanted to escape that hell hole and make better lives for themselves. Get off the crackpipe, Goobs.

Buffalo does deserve a franchise, a CFL franchise. Give the Bills to a city that can and wants to support a NFL team.

gmen1987 that had to be the dumbest thing I've read in a long time. Its been a well known fact that Buffalo has one of the best fan bases in sports. Its easy to sell out a stadium when the city includes 8 million people as opposed to 600,000. If you wanna pay taxes for a football team maybe you should move the team to New York and foot your own bill, and not leave it on NJ taxpayers

Lots of NFL and NHL players simply don't want to play in Buffalo. Willis McGahee was correct in his analysis of the area. Hard to attract prime free agents to a dump like Buffalo and western NY.
