Nick Mangold wants teammates to “Man up and put your name to it”

After reading anonymous quotes from some of his teammates ripping Mark Sanchez and saying they’re rather play with Peyton Manning, Jets center Nick Mangold has had enough.

Mangold took to Twitter on Wednesday to take issue with his unnamed teammates who told the New York Daily News that Sanchez is “lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched.”

“This,” Mangold tweeted, with a link to the Daily News article, “is false. If ‘unnamed sources’ want to attack Mark, man up and put your name to it.”

Mangold makes a fair point: If you’re a player on the Jets, and you want the Jets to get better, anonymously attacking Sanchez through the media is not the right way to go about it. A couple of Jets players have manned up and put their names on their comments, including backup quarterback Greg McElroy and running back LaDainian Tomlinson. But much of the criticism from within the Jets has come from people who didn’t put their names behind that criticism. It’s not surprising that Mangold is unhappy about that.

  1. Man, the Jets never stop providing entertainment or being the laughing stock of the NFL. What a joke that organization is.

  2. Whatever. If a player thinks there needs to be a change, he should be free to communicate that however he sees fit. Obviously, he doesn’t want to be on record in case those changes don’t happen. So anonymous complaints may make perfect sense in this case.

  3. No actual names were given, with the informants being known only as “Texaco Burlap” and “Tony ‘Wadd’ Holmes”.

  4. Ok, here are my two thoughts:

    1. Mangold did it! (If he did, simply Genius!)
    2. Schottenheimer did it on his way out the door

  5. I’d love to hear Santonio Holmes go in front of a camera and say, “Look, I’ll put my name on it. Sanchez sucks!!!”

  6. hahahahahahahhaaa fitting of the Jets, they go out and play like a bunch of little girls on Sundays, now they go and spread rumors and talk behind teammates backs like little girls!!

    SOOOOOO PATHETIC!!!

    STAFFORD > sanchez and freeman combined!!!

  7. If a tie is like kissing your sister, the Jets’ season must have felt like kissing Mangold’s sister.

  8. You guys have it all wrong!

    Holmes is behind this! He wants more catches and is getting even with Sanchez holding extra meetings! He is the cancer! He want a new quaterback that will play by his tune!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Whatever. This is not an anonymous critique placed in a suggestion box. This is blasting a teammate in the national media while anonymously avoiding any criticism that may be returned. The media won’t name them because they want the inside scoop on a team in the largest market and a malcontent with an axe to grind is the best way to get it. Regardless of what player(s) it is, the Jets could regain some respect and dignity by getting rid of the contentious coward(s)
  10. No body made those comments. Its the media, they have nothing to talk about this year. That is why they road the Tebow story into the ground. Packers might be a good team, but they are boring and nobody cares about them.
  11. Close your eyes and imagine this heavenly vista….
    Dolphin, Patriot, and Bill’s fans all sitting around in perfect harmony, drinking beers together on a big couch, in a big man-cave. Drunk, happy, arms around eachother. Laughing, reminiscing together about Marino and Kelly, and Grogan. All of us pointing our fingers at the t.v., and the newspapers, and the computer screens, and just belly-laughing at the total humiliation of the N.Y. Jets!
    It’s like a big Coca-Cola commercial. I love this.
    What could come next? It’s one unbelievable thing after the next with these losers.
    Thank you God.
  12. And stay tuned for tomorrow’s episode of “As the Jets Implode”. The series has been renewed for its upcoming 44th season without winning anything.
  13. During the hard times you find out who your real leaders are. If anybody listened to mangolds interview on espn radio today you found out that hes a real leader on this team. He doesnt cry or throw people under the bus or make comments and not put his name on it. He tells it like it is and stood behind his coach and qb. Im so glad we have nick on our team, more of the guys in that locker room need to learn a thing or to from him. Hes everything you want in a player hes a leader and as tough as they come.
  14. Good job Mangold, to many people bein little biatches and not showing any character… but then agaib look at their headcoach and you can understand why..
  15. Jets should sign Nick Mangold’s sister.. she plays lineman also… she has more balls than half the crying Jets players
  16. Sanchez is one of the quarterbacks we are forced to hear about every week. He is less than average. If not for a good defense, the Jets would never have made the playoffs with Sanchez under center. Sanchez is a lot like Vince Young. Played on a team with a ton of talent and got all the credit for the wins. I knew Sanchez was sub-par when I was watching highlights a couple seasons back. Sanchezz did some average things, things every fan expects a Quarterback to do. The show hosts talked of Sanchez like he jusst turned walked on water, then turned that same water into wine.
  17. What if it was B.Shottenheimer that said it, and did put his name to it. I’m sure Rex would then be the first in line to not invite (B.S.) back to the Locker Room.
    Oh woops…….
  18. This is just one of the reasons I have a problem with this article. Manish is a great guy and an excellent reporter, but if I’ve learned one thing from the internet, it’s that if you can’t source you’re knowledge, what you have to say is worth less than spit.
    The report alleges that Sanchez is a lazy bum who doesn’t put the fair amount of work in, but by all indications (Coaches, teammates, beat writers, the works) Sanchez works harder than almost anybody in the organization, so it seems that is a figment of somebodies imagination. Of all the things you can say about the man, you cannot say that he is not a competitor. Intangibles were never Mark Sanchez’s problem. Another thing I didn’t like was that they’d have the Jets F/O trade for Manning as if that’s some awful slight against Sanchez, unless you’re New England, New Orleans, or Green Bay, (and depending on your thoughts) Manning is an upgrade for your QB position. And the final thing I don’t like is the anonymity! Greg freakin’ McElroy had the cojones to speak out publically! Mangold sounded like he wanted to take the perpetrator to the woodshed, and for good reason. I do have to say they coddle Sanchez like crazy (in public, anyway) though, that was 100% truth.
    Oh, and one more thing. Brees said he loved how Mangold stuck up for his quarterback, and since Drew is a former victim of Schottenheimer Schadenfreude himself, that could be quite telling.
  19. The Jets are like the Kardashians…short on talent, no substance, and always in the headlines. Why do these guys deserve this much attention!!?
  20. This team is wasted. Ryan needs to go. These guys are all popping at the mouth, just like him. This team is for fans that like soaps or WWF.
    Only a matter of time before they usurp the Bills as the bottom feeders of the AFC East. A good coach with a good staff wouldn’t have this drama. Even the 9ers, as lowly as they were the last decade, didn’t have players backbiting each other in the press. Ryan is blowhard, perfect for blowhard fans…
    Enjoy!
  21. The “unnamed sources” bit should be illegal in journalism. It gives the writer the freedom to state anything they want and state it as fact. There is so much sleazy journalism out there that the public should be going after the writer, not the person whom the article is about. While I don’t like the Jets, the writer of that article’s balls should be hung up. If they really do have a “source” and they can’t name them, then they shouldn’t be writing the article.
  22. Last time I looked this was a team that went to 2 AFC championship teams in the last 3 years, with Sanchez as QB. If the team failed to make the playoffs, it was the team that failed not just Sanchez. If there are players airing team dirty laundry, Rex needs to step up to the plate and get rid of them. To ignore it, means he’s lost control of his team.
  23. Greg McElroy did and will likely be released when the team is allowed to.
    I think the kind of situation in NY is obviously a product of their coach’s attitude and their personnel decisions (Santonio Holmes was traded for a 5th rounder because he’s a cancer, not because he’s untalented).
  24. A team whose season ended two weeks ago and did more talking than winning continues to dominate the headlines with talking. Tim Tebow is flabbergasted
  25. Good to know someone on the Jets realize what a crappy QB they have and they are not living in a dream world like Nick Mangold. He should WANT a change from Sanchez because they ain’t going no where with him
  26. Hey Nick…the only issue is that Santonio Holmes can’t actually spell his name correctly….
  27. Unnamed sources are at the heart of many stories. How do we know there are any unnamed sources here? Maybe it’s just the pressure of being a journalist and needing a story? Remember The New York Times’ reporter Jayson Blair? I’m just saying.
  28. Two problems for Mangold’s argument –
    1 – There has been nothing said against Sanchez that isn’t true. The fact the Jets dumbed down the offense after 2009 showed they knew they had a fundamental problem with Sanchez’s ability as a quarterback.
    2 – Why should anyone put their name to anything here? The issue is 100% Sanchez and his fundamental failure as a quarterback – if anything, embarassing him in public like this is what he needs, because he obviously doesn’t listen to criticisms in-house.
  29. Love or Hate the mode of Delivery, the fact the SOMEONE on the inside actually came out and stated what we’ve all been watching for the last 3 years is simply INCREDIBLE!
    Fat-Boy won’t say it, Brian Shottenheimer wouldn’t say it. Mangold won’t say it. And that vast majority of Jets fans tip-toe around it.
    The hard truth for Not-Yet fans is that they made a MAJOR BLUNDER reaching for this kid in the draft. USC, the NCAA and the Media propped him up to be something he was not.
    He is a WELL – below average QB with an “OK” skill set that is SCARED to DEATH out there.
    He lacks the intelligence, escapability, arm-strength, anticipation, peripheral vision, football acumen overall BRASS Balls it takes to STAND IN THE POCKET and deliver the ball to to his playmakers.
    He looks flat out SCARED TO DEATH out there.
    He has missed SO MANY open receivers in games it must be EXCEEDINGLY frustrating for a WR, RB or TE to play with him on a consistent basis
    A game a few weeks ago he was ducking, stumbling and running for cover on almost every other play against someone ( Giants?) because he has no BALLS.
    Bottom line; in the context of being an NFL QB? He is a PU$$Y
    Guaranteed the Jets will move on from him within 2 seasons, bet on it!
  30. Shut up Mangold, it’s not your place to speak for Sanchez. He gets babied enough by the coaching staff.
  31. Every time I read this (reported elsewhere much earlier in the day), I hear it in Herm Edwards voice when he said, in a press conference, “putcha name on it!”
    It’s amazing how many here are saying the Jets have constantly been a laughing stock. Yeah…always a laughing stock. Yeah…right.
  32. The saying is “YOU are what your record is”……and “players take on the personality of the head coach”. PERFECT example here, I don’t know why but I love seeing the JETS implode!!!!
    Boy, those Ryans talk a lot of trash for not winning ANYTHING!!!! Same with the other slob in Dallas……he’s a DEF guru but over the past 6-8 years, his Defense averages 18th in the NFL, good job guys!!!! I wonder where they would be if they didn’t talk so much trash? And Rex, great job making Santonio Holmes your Captain too!!! LOL
  33. The writer said it was a “source” close to the team, not a player. I am guessing it is one of Sanchez’s prom dates.
  34. Mark Sanchez is a terrible quarterback. Josh Freeman played terribly this year but if the Jets would have picked him they may have won the Superbowl last year. Seriously, Freeman has ZERO talent around him and won 10 games last year with 10 rookies.
  35. Sanchez was also hurt from the teams early success. Granted they won alot of games but it wasn’t because of Sanchez…it was that D. He got a lot of the attention and stardom from that…..I don’t know if the kid has the minerals to bounce back from such negativity. I feel like he’s crying at his parents house right now. “Mom, nobody likes me anymore!!”
  36. if you don’t put your name on it then your weak! i mean if you put in work then you have a right to call someone out, but if your a slouch??? shhhh
  37. Note to the rest of the league:
    If you ever build your team into a championship contender. Stick with your core players. Stay away from front running, soft hearted free agents. The ruin your squad every time. Eagles and Jets are your latest examples.
    That is all….now lets go get a F’in snack.
  38. Where is Woody Johnson in all of this? If I’m a jets fan, I would want to hear from the owner of my team..oh..by now.
  39. The bottom line is that the truth is Sanchez sucks. He will NEVER be an elite NFL QB and he is not capable of taking the Jets or any other NFL team, for that matter, to a Superbowl and win it…..
    uh, its already happened.
  41. The Jets are going to implode again next season unless they get rid of every single jagazz in that locker room, and that isn’t going to happen.
    The trainwreck is just beginning.
  42. What if the Jets traded Sanchez to Denver for Tebow straight up in the off season? Thumbs up if the Jets would be better off, thumbs down if the Jets would be worse off.
  43. Mangold has a man-crush on Sanchaz, it’s his Bud so he’s sticking up for him. I don’t care who said it, I believe 90 % of it. And that’s coming from a Jet’s fan.
  44. I will start by saying that watching the NY loudmouths *cough cough*, excuse me Jets implode makes for great entertainment. That being said, I do think Nick Mangold is right on. In this age of nutless media, if you are going to accuse anybody of things of that magnatude then man up and do not go “anonymous.”
    Also you might want to settle up in the locker room, practice facility, meeting room, etc.
    Hell, have a knock down dragout nucklebuster in the parking lot if that is what it takes.
    P.S. Here is an eqaution for you Anonymous + Lazy = Cowards
  45. As a Jets fan I agree with Mangold, man up and state your name. This creeping crap that everyone does is pure cowardice. If you are so afraid of the fallout don’t say nothing. I can’t believe this even passes for a story.
  46. LOL you have to love these Anonymous players/sources talking to the media..strange isn’t it? Anonymous basically means it could be anyone who said it, which basically means noone said it, which basically means the story is completely fabricated, which basically means…we are all stupid lol.
    ———————————————
    because YOU love giving it to them. ‘you’ve’ got fair reason to laugh at the jets right now. but here’s me laughing at you all. look what you have created! you use pft and they use you. what a rip!
  49. I’ll put my name to it, Joe Davenport. I’ll put your name to it to MANFOLD! you’re not good enough to call people out, your team is pathetic, F OFF!
  50. Rex has lost control of the locker room. It’s more than obvious, there is a serious rift among the players. If he doesn’t get this under control he will be out as the head coach.
  51. Something seems wrong with the picture. Sanchez has a “C” on his jersey and Mangold does not.
  52. I will happily put my name on it….I have been saying Mark had bust written all over him….And the guy is an arrogant little punk. The hot dog incident sent me over the edge. I mean really…..Who eats a hot dog on the sidelines? Kid is a Gen Z putz
  53. Tomlinson deserves credit for calling out Holmes, although his statement was hardly brave. It was a fairly obvious observation. But McElroy? He didn’t mention names. He was very vague. Every locker room has selfish players. He didn’t say anything that everyone didn’t already know.
    But the point stands: if you’re going to call out your franchise QB, have the guts to do it to his face. I could respect that.
  54. Big mouth, undisciplined, speak thru the press coach, leads to big mouth, undisciplined, speak thru the press players…
    Now let’s go get a g-d damn snack!!!!
  55. “Nick Mangold wants teammates to “Man up and put your name to it”
    I WANT the Jets to go away.
    Make the world a better place and launch the Jets into space.
  56. i’m going to guess that the person is white or else the interview go something like this “he aint never done no work at practice. he lazy.”
  57. Actually….. I love all the Jet hate on this thread. No one would talk this much junk about Cleveland or Tampa Bay or St. Louis.
    When you are a threat, people want to knock you down. When you aren’t a threat, people ignore you.
  58. Any writer can hide behind there own thoughts and attribute it to an ‘unnamed source’. Such BS. I’m willing to be 99% of the time the unnamed source is the writer himself. He gets to hide behind the comments and it also makes him look like he has ‘sources’ which does not go unnoticed by his employers.
  59. faulkana:
    No offense, but the Bills and Dolphins are certainly not laughing at the Jets turmoil. It could be because neither of these teams have won a playoff game in over a freakin decade!!!!
  60. pabillsfan :
    If you think the Jets are a joke organization I cant imagine what you would think of your precious bills team. they have been the model success over the last decade, not making the playoffs once let alone winning a playoff game.
