Bears will interview Greg Olson

G. Olson AP

The Bears have hired Mike Tice to run their offense, but they still need a quarterbacks coach to work with Jay Cutler.

Considering Tice’s lack of experience with the passing game, any quarterbacks coach hire may also get a “passing game coordinator” title.

The first known candidate is former Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.  (No, not Greg Olsen.)

Other potential candidates for the gig: Former Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, former Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates, and University of Miami offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. Koetter coached with Tice in Jacksonville. Bates and Fisher have worked with Jay Cutler before.

First order of business … get Cutler to stop acting like such a wussie. Second, get Cutler to stop wearing his helmet halfway on his head when sitting on the sidelines. Makes him look retarded.

They should hire him….and then ask him to run the defense.

Like how when they drafted Greg Olsen, and insisted on using him primarily as a blocker.

Isn’t he going to be busy playing tight end for the Panthers?

Oh I see, it’s all in the pronunciation… Ol.. SOOOON

lack of experience with the passing game?

Carter who? Moss who? Culpepper who?

God am I glad to be rid of him. I could not frickin believe they kept HIM after the Gruden purge, and I would have lost my mind if they kept him through the Raheem purge.

Run, run, throw for 2 yards on 3rd and 14.

End around to Arrelious Benn for loss of 3.

OR, you should post about entirely inaccurate things in the hopes of earning a few “thumbs ups.”

bears need a whole new coaching staff, and maybe some titanium bones for cutler.

Where the hell does this “Mike Tice has a lack of knowledge in the passing game” nonsense come from?

The man was a TE in the NFL for 14 years, playing under 4-5 different systems. He was than an OL coach in Minnesota with Brian Billick as the OC where they had a pretty sophisticated passing attack. He was then a HC and hired Scott Linehan (who has subsequently been a HC and an OC twice), and his teams ranked in the top 10 in passing 3 out of his 4 years as HC. He then did odd jobs around Jacksonville before going back to be an OL coach with Mike Martz as the OC.

I’m pretty sure that during his time working with those guys and in all those different systems, he’s picked up a thing or two along the way. The man is over qualified for being a first time OC.

I didn’t love him as a HC for my Vikes, but this sites constant efforts to make him out to be the Homer Simpson of the NFL is rather ridiculous.

I’m actually a big fan of this guy since his time as the QB coach at Purdue during the Joe Tiller / Drew Brees era. The only thing I’d love to see more than the Bears hiring him, would be for Purdue to hire him to replace Danny Hopeless as head coach there.

Do you have any concrete examples of Cutler acting like a “wussie”? Or are you one of those people that gets their opinions from message boards?

Because I watched Cutler getting slaughtered by opposing defenses this year due to terrible offensive line play yet stand in there and deliver great passes milliseconds before being blasted by yet another rusher running free.

I mean, that’s what I SAW, of course I didn’t confirm that that actually meant he was tough by seeing what the message boards said.

call me crazy, but… shouldn’t, you know… the new GM be involved in this? this franchise is becoming more tangled up by the day. it’s like they’re pointing the gun at their own feet, shooting, and screaming DANCE!

If you watched the Bucs play last season you know how bad a play caller Olson is, so happy they booted that bum!

  16. Nevis says: Jan 12, 2012 12:12 PM

Good call hiring an OC who lacks “experience with the passing game”.

The Bears are heading straight for another season of sheer mediocrity.

Tice no pass ball, Tice run ball. Ugggh

  18. bodester says: Jan 12, 2012 12:19 PM

As a Lions fan I know what the Bears just went through with Martz. Cutler can only get better in a system that doesn’t require him to drop 8-10 steps for every pass.

  19. plumber52 says: Jan 12, 2012 12:29 PM

Lack of experience???? Randy ratio anyone???

  20. thevza says: Jan 12, 2012 12:34 PM

Only the Chicago Bears….. In today’s pass-happy NFL, only the Bears anoint an offensive coordinator with a “lack of experience with the passing game.” Call me crazy, but shouldn’t the guy calling the plays have a firm grasp on the entire offense? Not just blocking and running? Moreover, if Tice is credited with keeping the O-Line afloat these past few years with a lack of talent and continuity, won’t it be a step back to reduce his role with those guys? Instead he’ll be occupied studying such things as how opposing DB’s will line up to jam Earl Bennett off the line…

I think Cutler has the tools to succeed, whether the weapons will be there for him is a whole other issue entirely. What he needs is an OC that can read a defensive plan and know when to throw the screen and when to look deep. I think the Bears are one of the best teams at the screen with Forte, and why they run it less is beyond me…it would help keep their opponents honest a lot more.

If the Bears fail to improve on the offensive side of the ball next year, the entire staff from top to bottom needs to be cut loose, because right now this looks like someone throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks.

As a Pack fan, I’ve questioned but respected Lovie, but I really can’t wait to see how good meathead is going to be with his hands on the controls. We’ll see.

  23. raiderlyfe510 says: Jan 12, 2012 1:15 PM

LOL at LionsFan saying that the bears can only get better without Martz. What did the Lions do after firing Martz…Lose 16 straight games.

Lovie might as well fire himself , now.

  24. dino2997 says: Jan 12, 2012 1:24 PM

Quite a few comments from Bucs fans. Sorry but Greg Olson doesn’t deserve the blame for the Bucs season.

It’s a QB driven league and Josh Freeman was exposed as having a fluke season last year. No coach could have fixed his lack of composure midseason

  25. insertnamehere2 says: Jan 12, 2012 2:11 PM

Nothing will change until Lovie is gone!! Rivera had a pair and he got shipped out! It’s obvious Lovie wants to be King! Count on this years draft being identical to Previous draft’s…

I noticed something. Almost every comment where someone says that Mike Tice will be a horrible OC, or Cutler is a horrible QB, has a like:dislike ratio of about 1:10. See that’s what I like about this site, the people here actually think about things instead of just going, “Mike Tice needs a little help with passing, so he shouldn’t be a OC”, or “Jay Cutler got hurt in the playoffs once, so he doesn’t deserve to QB ever again”. While people who mention Tice’s experience in Minnesota and as a tight end or how Cutler has done well considering his team context get a 25:1 like:dislike ratio. Well done, peoples.
