And for those of you complaining that he is a back-up QB.. need I remind you Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Eli, Warner, Favre, Schaub, Vick, Rivers, Brunell, Hasselbeck, and countless other Pro Bowl level quarterbacks were former back-ups.

The only stellar QB’s I can remember that weren’t back ups at one point in time were Marino, Elway, Aikman, Peyton, and now Newt.

The Packers won’t Franchise him because if they do , they’d have to pay him more than Rogers is making if he stays with the team , and no one in their right mind would trade first round picks and franchise tag money for an unproven backup , unless you’re the Arizona Cardinals

If the Packers franchise Flynn they do not have to pay him money until he signs the franchise tag, but they still hold his rights. Flynn is smart enough to know that no signing his franchise tag means a chance of getting a better long term deal in a sign and trade with another team. The other team can negotiate a separate deal and do not have to pay the franchise tag cost (14.5 million)

The Packers would need to be able to fit the franchise number under the cap while working out the trade deal. Not difficult to clear that amount with Clifton, Driver and others that might possibly not be in future plans that are in the high money stages of their contracts.

While it is against the spirit of the CBA to use the tag then trade, it has been allowed to happen before with Cassel and there was no punishment or adjustment of the rules after that happened.

1. work out a new deal with Rodgers paying him more than Flynn’s franchise number;

2. have a trade already worked out with a team that will accept the franchise number; and

3. have Flynn buy into it.

Otherwise, Flynn will go into free agency, with no guarantee he could match the franchise number in his new deal.

Flynn is going to be good, if he’s ALLOWED to be good. If he goes to Seattle, they need to get him more weapons, or no one is going to get open.

Unless the Packers have a wink/nod/fart agreement with Flynn for a franchise-and-trade deal, my guess is that Green Bay will instead franchise Jermichael Finley and let Flynn be a true free agent.

NE franchised Cassell as a backup QB and then traded him to KC for a second-round pick. As Scott Pioli was the GM in KC, it makes sense to conclude that there was a deal in place, probably long before NE actually made the offer to franchise Cassell.

GB would indeed be very wise to franchise Flynn, assuming two things:

1) They don’t need the tag to use on someone else they need to keep (like Finley).

2) They already have a deal in place to ship Flynn out.

They’d be stupid to do it without a deal in place, because then, if no deal could be reached, they’d be stuck paying their backup QB more than their starter.

As a Seahawks fan, I’m kind of indifferent to who we get, as long as we get someone. Our alternatives seem to be Flynn, trading up a small fortune in draft picks to get RG3, or drafting one of the second-tier QBs (Tannehill, Foles) and hoping they develop quickly. Given those options, I lean towards Flynn, assuming he doesn’t cost us way too much in terms of either money or draft picks.

A couple of points:
1.) ever hear of the expression “a bird in hand is worth two in the bush?”
2.) Flynn isn’t as good as Rodgers. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a good quarterback who’d be worth a lot to a team without one.
