Colts punter Pat McAfee made waves in 2010 by allegedly taking a swim in an Indianapolis canal while under the influence of something other than canal water. McAfee has now sparked a potential tsunami by taking a cannonball into the murky mess created by reports of Marines urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban.
Via WRTV, McAfee has strongly defended the Marines, sparking a firestorm of conflicting responses from his Twitter followers.
“Soooo people are pissed about our marines peeing on dead taliban??? #WhoCares #ThoseDudesTriedToKillOurDudes,” McAfee said on Twitter, which got the hot potato rolling.
McAfee has the right to speak his mind, and others have the right to support him, or to call him an idiot — just as many did to Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall for his statements on Twitter after the killing of Osama bin Laden.
And companies (including the football team that employs McAfee to play a fairly fungible position on the football field) don’t have to associate with someone who espouses inherently controversial, inflammatory, and polarizing views, regardless of whether he’s right or wrong.
He’s right, you know.

As a member of a military family, it doesn’t surprise me that some Marines pissed on the enemy’s dead bodies. Most people have no idea how combat can affect a person psychologically.
But it doesn’t change the fact that videotaping it–or doing it in front of someone who is videotaping–is one of the dumbest things you can possibly do. Seriously, who are you going to impress with that video when you get back home?
Winning a war against terrorists is just as much of a PR battle as it is a gun battle, and these guys didn’t help us out by deciding to make a movie of something they should’ve kept to themselves.

American soldiers will die in Afghanistan because of this video. Agree or disagree with what they did, there will be retaliation politically and on the battlefield. Things like this are against the laws of war for a reason…they get soldiers killed. These Marines should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The laws they took an oath to obey and defend.

Two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq give me a different perspective than a punter who wears a scrunchy in his hair. I was not a sniper, but I did serve in a LRS detachment, so we were in very similar situations (Isolated/Personal/Close) when engaging the enemy. Surrepticious combat operations create a more intimate and up-close environment. The quality of individual that serves as a sniper or in an elite unit is supposed to be high enough that the command can expect things like this to NOT happen. These Marines are disgraces to the Corps. This provided the enemy with a tremendous PR victory. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about piling up dead AQ and Taliban, as a matter of fact, it’s a beautiful thing, but to bring a US Marine down to the level of our enemy is simply unacceptable.

But all you idiots who think this is ok, don’t know crap! I’m a US Soldier of 15 years, done 2 tours in Iraq 2005 and 2009. Those dumb arse Marines just put all those other Soldiers and Marines over in the Stan in much more danger! This happened after the photos and videos popped up after Abu Graib. Those idiot Soldiers prolonged that war by 3-4 years. It was used a recruiting propoganda for the Taliban in Iraq. They used it against us heavily, it made our work that much harder. The good Iraqi’s had lost trust in us and quit cooperating and some even joined there cause.
What these Marines did, is the same thing. It’s going to prolong this war and by energizing the civilians to stop cooperating and joining there cause. Take it from my experience. These Marines just killed there own!!!

The point, and Mike hit it squarely, is not rather we should condemn or applause the soldiers. The point is that any professional athlete that chooses to make controversial political statements via a Social Network are exposing themselves to criticism unnecessarily, and it has the potential to harm their earning potential, as well as become a distraction to the team and other players. You can have your view, and you have the right to broadcast it if you want, but that does not make it a good idea, especially if you are in the public spotlight.

I say GREAT job to the guys that did it, GREAT job to the people that aren’t turning on these guys that did it. I have ZERO issue with Islam or any religion (no, I am personally not religious), but I have a major issue with people that are willing to murder babies for no real reason. Even in he most stable of environments we see them as just kids . Yet we expect these young men to understand the ramifications of stupid behavior in an environment where dying is a real possibility. War changes from generation to generation if we in the US did not adapted then we would be a British colony still. They did not like our war tactics. So let our men and women do what they need to do to come home safely.

I understand the…poetic justice…of urinating on the corpses of your enemy. I get it. Those people are scum, they tried to kill Americans.
However, to urinate on dead bodies, FILM IT, then have it wind up on the internet? That’s a recruitment film for terrorists in and of itself. America is supposed to be above those barbarian tactics used like that. Shoot to kill. Not shoot to kill then urinate on.
The fact is that people over there that may have either agreed with us being there, or been sympathetic to the cause, will lose that in seeing those “Marines” urinate on dead bodies.
Honor is a big word in the military, and those men showed none. They compromised the lives of their fellow soldiers by participating in that reckless and disrespectful behavior.
Those marines lacked the one thing that sets the U.S. Marine apart…HONOR.
As a veteran of over 20 years in the USAF I find their actions abhorrent and damaging. Kill the terrorists in battle, through covert operations or however is necessary but maintain the honor and dignity associated with serving in the United States’ military. Those marines damaged the collective reputation of all who serve. They have endangered their brethren as well both on the battlefield and in future negotiations (i.e. SOFA, etc.) with countries in that region and around the world. A comment above recommended an ART 15 (NJP) with a dog and pony show. That’s BS. These guys no longer deserve to be Marines and should face courts-martial.

100% untrue. I am an Army vet. I served 7.5 years after Uncle Sam paid for college. Got stop lossed so I stayed past my 6. I stand by what I said, a Marine S operating is easily in the discussion as one of the finest, most professional warriors in the world. They are better than the savages we fight over there. These Marines did not honor their commitment to the USMC and out country.
The fact that a sniper team would carry a video camera for reasons other than intel is an egregious violation of operational security. I’m sure their officers and senior NCO’s would agree. They have placed even more strain on their brothers on the ground.
Tell yourself what you want, but I stand by what I say. Are the individuals who they were urinating on worthless? Yes. Should a Marine VIDEOTAPE a war crime and allow it to be leaked? No.

The problem with this is that American soldiers who are captured aren’t going to be treated any worse because of that video. First, it presumes that if Marines didn’t piss on the terrorist dead, Marines would be treated better by their terrorist captors. Really? Explain that to me. Please, explain how it could be worse than having your head cut off and being eviscerated by your enemy.
Second, do you really believe that they aren’t aware of what we do to their dead already anyway. Of course they are. Just like we aware of what they do to ours.

The only reason any Americans are in harm’s way is because we’re occupying the country, and can anyone expect them to joyfully accept an invading army, no matter how wrong their behavior? Would you?

These are rhetorical questions here, I know. This crowd is rah-rah, my-country-right-or-wrong. There’s no comparing this guy’s comments to what Mendenhall said; like the latter’s comments or not, they were at least thoughtful and human.

As a person who lives abroad, I can tell you, Americans have a VERY bad image in basically any continent, even on Allied or NATO nations. Some Americans I meet present themselves as CANADIANS, so they don’t face antipathy from strangers. Doing this (pee + youtube) not only worsens the situation of American troops on the field, but also further damages the general perception of the US before the world.
As for the punter, he has the right to think whatever he wants about this or any other topic. Nothing against his right, but, IMO, very, VERY dumb…

Players and employees of sports team shouldn’t make statements like this because they are representatives of that team. When you make political remarks, you are inadvertantly putting your sports team in a political position. and suddenly politics is a part of this team and now people who have a positive view of the Colts (in this case), who disagree with something a player says like this, they will take it out on the Colts by not watching them or bypassing a trip to Indy, etc. NFL teams want to be NFL teams, not representatives of any kind of political view or supporters of white bread over wheat or any other non-football related issue.
Unless you are a moviestar or a rockstar where you only represent yourself, keep your opinions to yourself!
