Rex Ryan defends Mark Sanchez against his anonymous critics

As the blame game continues around the Jets, head coach Rex Ryan has stepped into the fray to stick up for quarterback Mark Sanchez.

On his conference call today to introduce new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, Ryan also spent some time speaking up for Sanchez — and against the unnamed teammates who have been quoted denigrating Sanchez in the press.

“I don’t know how many that don’t feel confident in Mark Sanchez,” Ryan said. “I’ll tell you this, if it’s not all of them, it’s the majority of our football team has a great deal confidence in Mark Sanchez. And when he walks through that door, his head is going to be held high, there’s no question about it. That’s what I know.”

Ryan has never been shy about standing by his own brash comments, and he said he doesn’t have much respect for people who need to hide their criticisms behind the cloak of anonymity.

“An anonymous source, or whatever it is, doesn’t speak on behalf of the entire football team; doesn’t put his name to a quote and things like that,” Ryan said. “Believe me, there’s a lot of people that I know specifically — a ton of our players, and everybody in this organization, in my opinion, that has a great deal of belief and admiration for Mark Sanchez.”

Of course, one of the criticisms of Sanchez has been that he became “lazy” because he was “coddled” by Ryan, and that Sanchez knew he didn’t have to worry about Ryan benching him. Ryan’s decision to forcefully defend Sanchez does nothing to change that perspective.

But Ryan’s comments do send a message to the rest of his players that he’ll defend them publicly, even as they’re ripping each other privately.

  1. We’ll be back next year, enjoy hating on our “8-8” season you cowardly idiotic keyboard warriors, because that’s as bad as we’ll get.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  2. I guess it has been nearly two days since the last Jets-related story came out, so we were bound to have another “update” on Days of Our Jets.

  3. There’s a great arena league football team out there right now that was switched with the Jets at birth.

  4. “Believe me, there’s a lot of people that I know specifically — a ton of our players, and everybody in this organization, in my opinion, that has a great deal of belief and admiration for Mark Sanchez.”

A ton is what, Rex and two DB’s???

    Seriously Jets? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  5. None of this changes the fact that Mark Sanchez is not a good QB. Historically, Matt Moore is better than Sanchez, and I would not want a franchise depending on him to take them to the playoffs or Superbowl.

Sanchez has finished in the bottom 10 of passer rating each of his three years. The Jets got into the playoffs a couple times in spite of, not because of, Mark Sanchez.

  6. This is EXACTLY what i wanted to hear to ensure the Patriots will own the AFC East for the forseeable future!

  7. Rex attributed criticisms of Sanchez to racial profiling. “Just because the guy is half Mexican doesn’t mean he is lazy.”.

  8. Think Rex has a lot of problems on his team, including the quarterback. Maybe if he didn’t build the ego of his team thinking “We’re better than everybody, we’re gonna win the Super Bowl” like he has done every year, then they could look to accomplishing something besides beating New England and barely making the playoffs.

Sanchez isn’t a good quarterback at the end of the day, regardless who hates him on the team and what Rex thinks.

  9. As a jets fan I seriously hope he is going the same route as with schottenheimer, because sanchez simply isn’t good enough. anytime a quarterback throws two picks to defensive linemen in the same game, it’s not about coaching it’s that you suck at your position.

  11. How about using this headline for every Jets story from now on:

“Rex opens his fat mouth, blabs about stuff, no one cares.”

  12. the jets got gifted into the playoffs by the colts two years ago, won more hairy games last year–which they should have lost—then any other team ive ever seen last year, and were pretty mediocre this year.

despite the two nice playoff runs, this jets team just isnt that good….and there’s absolutely NO reason to believe it will be any different next year.

sanchez isnt that good; rex is a clown and a liar; tannenbaum isnt qualified to be a GM; the jets defense is overrated. all of this equals a 7-9 win type team which nobody is afraid of.

  13. Wow, you guys make these statements how the Raiders need to clean house….. Look at this bunch of miscreants. Here’s a coach who needs the axe and half the team that needs to be replaced. What a joke

We’re not hating on your 8-8 season, rather we are LOVING IT!
In defense of Rex’s blatant lack of sticking up for Sanchez for the past two weeks…he has been trying to get out of his favorite recliner.

  15. You know this means Sanchez get cut? Last time he defnded a guy (Schotty) next thing ya know…….Gone

  16. It would be hard to find the words to articulate just how much Pats fans are enjoying the ongoing debacle in J-E-Ts land right now. The best part may be that it shows no signs of abating. What’s becoming evident is that their locker room is a cesspool of divas, has-beens, cowards, and general all around malcontents. What a great country!

  17. I don’t know how any player on that team could watch those last three must win games and feel confident in Sanchez throwing interceptions to defensive lineman.

Rex created this loud mouth team and this is the result.

  18. I am a realistic Jets fan and I as far as I am concerned there are only a few safe players on the roster: Harris, Revis, Mangold. Every other position that the players named do not play, needs to be evaluated.

I really believe at this point, Rex is saying things to keep players trade value up, especially Holmes and possibly Sanchez.

Regarding Sanchez, can he at least have a #1 receiver to work with instead of a revolving door of receivers ?
He would look alot better throwing to Megatron, Fitz or A.J. Green…just sayin

Lets review the past 3 seasons
    Playoff wins
    Sanchise 4
    Brady O
    ____________

Wow, congrats. 4 playoff wins and nothing to show for it. You must be proud.

Meanwhile, Brady’s hand is getting heavy from all those rings.

  20. The Jets are a circus. Truthfully they were lucky to be 8-8. That said, their schedule next year is very weak, so who knows whats gonna happen. If anybody in the AFC East could get their sh*t together the Jets would be in trouble. What we do know is Sanchez is not a quality QB. We know it and Jet fans know it. Talk all you want about 4 playoff wins. Who cares. 2 of them came against the Bengals and the perennial choke artists named the Chargers. Nobody is impressed. Sanchez is a dope who can’t read defenses and isn’t mentally strong enough to survive in the NY market. He will be a backup after next year.

  21. Train ………. wreck.

Gotta love this massive Yets implosion!

This Pat’s fan thinks it ain’t over ……. yet.

  22. 11-5 with Mangini’s players
    9-7 Rex Ryan
    8-8 Rex Ryan

    I’m seeing a trend.

    ————————————

I see a guy who totally failed miserably in his research!

Sanchez must have some type of blackmail over Ryan.

    ==================================
When there is nakie pictures of Michelle Ryan spread eagle on the internet with Rex stating he likes to watch guys fill a certain number of holes, I doubt there is there is much left you can blackmail Rex with.

  24. Am hoping all this jet stuff continues…and watch a very mediocre team go back where they’ve always been…at the bottom.

Amazin g how these clowns do/say something every day to attract attention to themselves.

They had the climax of their lives last year….cannot do any better w/same idiots.

    Back where they belong…no factor.

    Happy 43rd anniversary jet fans

  25. Not even in the postseason and these jokers get more coverage than everyone else, well, except maybe Tebow. Maybe next week we can move on from all these pretenders.

  26. What a comedown of expectations. From being a QB who would presumably (definitely!) lead them to a Super Bowl, to being able to walk into a locker room with his head held high.

    So teammates after a game:
“Wow, Sanchez lost us another game with three INTs. What a weak passer.”

“But hey, look at the guy’s head. Can’t throw straight, but his head sure is. Looks like a winner!”

  27. dlk47823 you dont know what the hell you are talking about. Forget comparing Sanchez and Brady playoff records over the last 3 years…compare Brady’s overall playoff record to the playoff record of the organization. Brady has just as many playoff wins as the whole history of the NYJ…just like your coach….all talk.

    go Pats!

  28. Regardless of Sanchez’s flaws, Rex is the number one person to blame for the ostensible turmoil unraveling in the Jets’ locker room. His outspoken, underdog mentality helped changed the Jets’ image and made them a contender again, but he should have toned it down (especially after last year). Instead, he set a precedent for ill-advised media outbursts and a general lack of respect for “locker room confidentiality” (for lack of a better term). Plenty of other teams are far worse than the Jets with far more precarious QB situations, but you don’t see their players causing nearly as much raucous. I give him one more year (if that) before Rex is out of town.

    Rex record is
9-7 (first year with as you say “mangini players”)
11-5 (with players he and the GM brought in)
    8-8

So umm, what trend do you see again?
I’m sure that these facts will not alter your anti-Rex narrative. Don’t let a little fact get in the way of your hating.
Hate him if you want, you have that right, but he has success. That’s all that matters

  30. now that the adrenalin has worn off. I seea team going backwards.. They just arent that talented.. on either side of the ball. They do talk a much better game than they play.

  31. ok seriously, pro football talk is starting be just like ESPN. all New York all the time ! anything about the jets is not a story

  32. 2 of those SB wins the Pats got they cheated to get there and the first was a given because of their name after 9/11. After the officials handed the Patsies trhe ball after a real bad call, shouuld have been Oakland’s ball, it never changed. That should have been the Raiders in theSB that year.
And Yes, I am saying that the patsies were handed every game from that game on including the SB.
And The patsies were proven to have cheated . They havent won a SB since. If it wasnt proven, how come they had to give up 2 draft picks?
