If you had asked the Broncos three weeks ago if they’d be happy to be rid of Josh McDaniels, they’d say “of course…we’re glad he’s gone, he sucked!” If you asked them this week, all of a sudden the answer becomes “Wait…that’s UNFAIR!”

Not just Denver fans, but anyone complaining about this coaching hire by the Pats being unfair, are just whining. Your team could have just as easily asked the Rams for permission to talk with McD and offered him a job. No one did…except the Pats…and possibly KC. So, please, enough…stop the nonsense.

So far as I know, coaches don’t have a collective bargaining agreement. (If they do, the CBA covers this situation and would have to be negotiated).

If there’s NOT a CBA, then ordinary labor law AND antitrust law applies. No way in hell is the league going to create “unclean hands” for itself when it comes time to deal with the players union again.

The one way out of this I can imagine is a league wide policy / rule that states that coaching contracts must run through the end of the league year. If you want to fire a coach before then, league policy would be that you make an arrangement with the fired coach to allow his contract to run til then. Or something like that.

The Ravens now did it also.

Now if the Pats do it, all hell will break loose.

And I am not a Pats fan.

I agree with the posters that said freeze all coaches from interview till after the SB. The teams that are in the playoffs get screwed every year.

Apparently all players are not in the same boat, true FA can sign at anytime. Denver just did it.

If you can’t hire a HC after the year starts (and I think that is correct-it has to be an interim from the present staff) , then you shouldn’t be able to hire anyone until a fixed date (SB), so that all are on the same playing field.

If memory serves me right, the Patriots are only the second team in recent memory, to do this-Dallas was the other.

Those that are looking at only the present situation are failing to look at the whole bigger picture.

This is a typical panic reaction by the league. If it was any team other than the Pats, no one would have said boo, and didn’t in the past or the rule would have been changed then.

Maybe change the rules to disallow it it for your piece of mind but it wont have an impact.

If they hired a coach off the opposing teams payroll I could understand stopping it. Why would they have to wait, while some other team could snap up that coach while you were winning in the playoffs.

If they’re not going to allow teams to sign coaches in the playoffs, then ban coaches from interviewing and taking new jobs with college teams. The Pats wouldn’t have bothered calling McDaniels this early if O’Brien hadn’t talked to Penn State.

How many times has this happened in the past and suddenly its an issue because its the Pats?

And you sir, are a poop dog. It’s not cheating unless there is a law against it. The Pats are losing their o coordinator to Penn St and had the opportunity to get McDaniels who will take that position over in 2012. Why not grab the guy you want before someone else does?
