What loophole? This is ridiculous it's even being talked about. Why should a player be allowed to be signed immediately to another squad after being cut, but not a coach after being fired? Players are signed by opposing teams all the time to learn formations and audibles, but coaches should have to wait? I'm a dolphin fan and hate the patriots, but please, all the "haters" are being babies about this.

Chalk another one up to a rule change being forced because of the machinations of Belicheat. It can join the "Tom Brady Rule," the "Ty Law Rule," the no-two-time-outs-to-ice-the-kicker rule, the "Bill Belichick Rule"... You can say "It's not illegal" all you want, but the fact that the league has to keep changing the rules to keep up with what the Patriots keep doing shows that what they're doing isn't "right."

Say it with me now...in your best Arnold voice.

"IT'S NOT A LOOPHOLE!!!"

If you had asked the Broncos three weeks ago if they'd be happy to be rid of Josh McDaniels, they'd say "of course...we're glad he's gone, he sucked!" If you asked them this week, all of a sudden the answer becomes "Wait...that's UNFAIR!"

Not just Denver fans, but anyone complaining about this coaching hire by the Pats being unfair, are just whining. Your team could have just as easily asked the Rams for permission to talk with McD and offered him a job. No one did...except the Pats...and possibly KC. So, please, enough...stop the nonsense.

The league can consider all it wants. I can't seem them touching this with a ten-foot pole. Consider:

So far as I know, coaches don't have a collective bargaining agreement. (If they do, the CBA covers this situation and would have to be negotiated).

If there's NOT a CBA, then ordinary labor law AND antitrust law applies. No way in hell is the league going to create "unclean hands" for itself when it comes time to deal with the players union again.

The one way out of this I can imagine is a league wide policy / rule that states that coaching contracts must run through the end of the league year. If you want to fire a coach before then, league policy would be that you make an arrangement with the fired coach to allow his contract to run til then. Or something like that.

It's only a loophole if you think it is.

I agree with the posters that said freeze all coaches from interview till after the SB. The teams that are in the playoffs get screwed every year.

Apparently all players are not in the same boat, true FA can sign at anytime. Denver just did it.

If you can't hire a HC after the year starts (and I think that is correct-it has to be an interim from the present staff) , then you shouldn't be able to hire anyone until a fixed date (SB), so that all are on the same playing field.

If memory serves me right, the Patriots are only the second team in recent memory, to do this-Dallas was the other.

Those that are looking at only the present situation are failing to look at the whole bigger picture.

This is a typical panic reaction by the league. If it was any team other than the Pats, no one would have said boo, and didn't in the past or the rule would have been changed then.

Close the loophole ... but to what effect? Couldn't BB have simply phoned Josh McD to pick his brain? Let's say the loophole was closed already; what's to prohibit BB from inviting Josh McD to attend practice as an 'observer'. A few years back, in the lead up to a Jets-Patriots game, Rex Ryan chirped about having lengthy game-planing discussions with his brother Rob (a former Patriot coach). What is going to be accomplished by delaying in-season (or in-post-season) hiring of coaches beyond delaying their hiring? I say nothing.

None of the player movement rules apply to coaches, why start now? He's not stepping on the field, so it shouldn't matter.

If they hired a coach off the opposing teams payroll I could understand stopping it. Why would they have to wait, while some other team could snap up that coach while you were winning in the playoffs.

I'm not sure if there's a collective bargaining agreement between the league and the coaches, but maybe their should be.

While I'm not a fan of the "EvilEmpire" lowleadman@ is right...It's not against the rules. And the Pat's were surely going to sign McDaniel anyway.
On the other hand, is it really suprising that it's the Pat's again. A new league rule to close a "fairness" loophole that they exploited.

Mike wouldn't have written a half dozen articles on this if it were any other team. It's amazing how jealous some of you guys are of Belichick.

If they're not going to allow teams to sign coaches in the playoffs, then ban coaches from interviewing and taking new jobs with college teams. The Pats wouldn't have bothered calling McDaniels this early if O'Brien hadn't talked to Penn State.

They should stop ALL coaching interviews/hires until after the Super Bowl. I'm a Pats fan and frankly I dont care. They didnt break the rules at the time, so what they do from here forward is none of my concern. Why should other teams get to purge and disrupt playoff teams with interviews but the playoff teams are left up the creek so to say.

How many times has this happened in the past and suddenly its an issue because its the Pats?

And you sir, are a poop dog. It’s not cheating unless there is a law against it. The Pats are losing their o coordinator to Penn St and had the opportunity to get McDaniels who will take that position over in 2012. Why not grab the guy you want before someone else does?

Their can’t be 98 other poop dogs who think like you. Must be a Steeler fan. Grow up. Like you have never cheated or done anything in life that was wrong. That may be true is your father keeps you locked up in the cellar.
