The Packers took the ball away a lot in the regular season, I meant to say. The Packers live on the turnover margin and have done pretty well with it. It stood them in good stead in 2010. In 2009 and 2011, they turned the ball over a lot in the playoffs and lost in the first game both times. In 2010, a +6 turnover margin going 4-0, in 2009 and 2011, a -5 turnover margin going 0-2. Nine of the last 12 Super Bowl winners won the playoff turnover margin, the other 3 of 12 were won by the team who were #2 in turnover margin. If you give the ball away a ton somewhere in the playoffs, that will wash you out and nothing much else is going to matter. Maybe every once in a long while a strange circumstance will go against the statistics, but it will merely be the exception to prove the rule. The Packers have been the best team in the league in regular season turnover margin. They just didn't sustain that potency come the playoffs and it bit them in the behind.

Why the Packers lost? 4 turnovers. It began and ended there.

In the last 20 years, in the playoffs, 71 times (out of 440 opponents - 11 games x 2 opponents x 20 years) did a team have 4 or more turnovers. Only THREE times did the team with 4 or more turnovers WIN the game, and one time BOTH teams had 4 turnovers so one had to win and the other lose. So out of the 69 times a team had 4+ turnovers, only TWICE did the team win the game. Both times it was Tennessee - in 1999 and 2002.

So if you turn the ball over 4 times, don't expect to win the game regardless of what else you do. Everything else is a reason way the Packers didn't lose by a smaller margin.

During 2011 these are some salient points about the Packers -

ALL REGULAR SEASON GAMES -

411 - defensive yards per game
0.9 - average giveaways by Packers
12.6 - average margin of victory
15-1 - regular season record

ALL REGULAR SEASON GAMES AGAINST PLAYOFF CALIBER TEAMS -

423 - defensive yards per game
1.0 - average giveaways by Packers
10.7 - average margin of victory
6-0 - regular season record against playoff teams

IN THE PLAYOFF AGAINST GIANTS

420 - defensive yards per game
4.0 - giveaways by Packers
-17.0 - margin of loss
0-1 - 2011 post season record

The dropped passes leading to punts and turn over on downs didn't help, but the game was effectively lost when the Packers kept turning the ball over, taking it out of the hands of the prolific offense and handing it to the other team. The D gave up a lot of yards, but they also took the ball away alot. But that only works when the O does its job. The only difference that mattered was going from an average of 1 turnover a game against playoff teams to 4, especially given the first part of this comment. Historically, you just aren't going to win with that many turnovers.

The Packers lost in large part because they didn't think that defeat was a realistic possibility. Most of us Cheeseheads were guilty of the same arrogance. You can analyze the individual performances and the various intangibles all you want in search of reasons/excuses. Have fun. The Giants are a very good football team. They played a good game. They won. Congratulations to Tom Coughlin and his players.
And to all you Packer fans who are blogging/commenting that "so and so" sucks and that "so and so" ought to be fired, please go and find another team to root for. Yes, the Packers do have some needs to be addressed. But your weasley whining in the aftermath of a big loss is just sour grapes. Very bush league.

Sunday's game was probably the worst game I have watched the Packers play all year Tony ! ...However during their history making run this year it always troubled me that no more emphasis was placed on correcting the defense in ability to stop most of their opponents. I commented several times to my son that if I were the secondary coach for the packers the secondary group would have been running their butts off every week until they learned how to tackle an offensive player by making the hit , then wrapping them up , ...that the basic fundamentals of playing defense. Dom Capers elected to have his secondary go for the strip instead of what he should have demanded from them , wrapping the ball carrier , tight end or whoever had the ball , .....UP !!!!
I grew up during the Lombardi era and I could hear his words echoing all during this game , ..." Grab , grab , grab !!! " I guarantee had he been coaching the Packers on Sunday he would not have tolerated this lackluster performance from his defense ! ....Hey and (3) fumbles that really should have been (4) and (8) dropped passes didn't help either ! Give credit where credit is due , ...The Giants were ready to play , totally out-played the Packers on Sunday and deserve to be advancing to play the Niners in the NFC Championship game this Sunday !

Just some stats:

Aaron is 3-18 when losing in the 4th quarter. As stated by one observer....you never see that look on Aarons face when behind like you did on Bretts.

Aaron is 4-2 in postseason after 4 season as starter. Brett 9-4 after first six season....will Aaron catch up. He still has big shoes to fill.

Why we lost.....had nothing to do with 6 dropped passes (giants had their own). We didn't have that killer instinct, poor defense all year and a QB that never had the guys convinced they could win in whatever situation like Brett always did.

Say what you want about BRett (and leave out the personnal stuff...they all have baggage)...Aaron has a ways to go to be the total package like QB's like Brett, Brady, Young, Montana etc. But with all the talent around him why isn't he?

#1. The Giants made the Pack punt once so ease up on all this 'dominating' defense talk. Add to that tons of 3rd down drops and overthrows. Our guys were open often people; they simply didn't make the plays.

#2. Three Giant TDs were setup by the Packers!

#3. The Packers won the time of possession battle; should've been a much closer game.

#3. The Giants PLAYED BETTER than the Packers; that's why the Packers lost.

#4. Time to take a break and see how many new starters on Defense we can round up for next year!

Every Recent good playoff team has had a dominate play maker safty. Ravens, Steelers, Cardinals, Giants, Colts, Saints and last year Packers. (INT-TD-Superbowl)
With 3 time all pro secondary signal caller and defensive leader Nick Collins on IR as of week 2 this season saw the Packer secondary fall to 32nd. Rookie Burnett first full year off IR and Back Up Peperah togeather did not have the big play safty skills or experience of Collins. Without a quick rush tackle to close the pocket by the loss of Jenkins from last year, Matthews was double teamed. The hole in the Packer defense was exploited. If Collins is forced to retire, Woodson may be moved to fill Safety hole and Ted Thompson will shop for another cover corner and draft for the pass rush to win in the playoffs and McCarthy, Rogers and Packers will get second ring.

I was at this game yesterday and the other reason we lost is the pathetic fans. All these fans are now are a bunch of little rich punks who inheritated their tickets from their dad or grandfather and they go just to try and show off cause they know how hard it is to get a ticket. As i tried saying before. All game all you hear is a guy screaming across you sayin, “Hey were going to Curly’s at halftime we do it every week you know cause we have season tickets”. Seriously dude was all that needed. Im trying to watch a game and have season tickets to, Do you really got to try showing off. Oh and dont let me forget the bar bum women who the guys just slept with the night before and you see them at the game and even on tv making our state look like trash. The stadium volume was about like 10bd i swear to god. And seriously the only time these bums would cheer is when we got to the 20 and were gonna maybe score or when the giants were gonna score and we needed the defense to stop them. No cheering your team up the field giving em confidence to score and it’s been like this for the past like 7yrs. Im telling you this is a new packers generation and they are going to lose all the mystique they ever had.Makes me sad cause as a 26yr loyal fan im done
......
Tony.....I have been a Vikings fan my entire life.....through all the ups and downs.....BIG downs!! I had never taken in a game at Lambeau until this year. A friend of mine is a big Pack fan and he scored some tickets for the Vikes-Pack game this year and asked me to go. I was stoked!!! I couldn't wait to put on my AP jersey and proudly cheer for my Vikes at Lambeau. I arrived at one of the parking lots to tailgate, expecting to talk football with Pack fans......talk history of our teams rivalry and talk a little trash of course. I WAS ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED that no one said ANYTHING to me. All there was was a bunch of 20-30 year old kids running around with rap music playing, dancing around getting drunk and smoking weed. My friend and I walked all over to almost all the lots and it was all the same.....it was like none of these punks were there for the game besides all their Rodgers and Matthews jerseys. No one would even smack talk to me......there wasn't much for me to cheer for with the Vikes that game, but I stood and screamed and cheered for the Vikes throughout the game and no one even cared.....and I heard exactly what you talked about several times....."Hey lets go to BDubs after the game"....Hey, are you guys partying at Jims later"...its like the game was just an afterthought!! I was shocked.....I was expecting a much more football fan environment, but it was like the Pack fans didn't even care what was going on out on the field or that they were kicking the snot out of a huge division rival!! I hate watching games at the Humpydump.....bad football stadium.....but dare I say......at least a guy can get some football smack talk or football conversation in general going there!!! It was a weird experience at Lambeau for me, definitely not what I expected. Packer fans who hate Viking fans.......go ahead and tear apart my comment because I am sure you can't stand it but it is the truth and what I experienced!!

Tony…..I have been a Vikings fan my entire life…..through all the ups and downs…..BIG downs!! I had never taken in a game at Lambeau until this year. A friend of mine is a big Pack fan and he scored some tickets for the Vikes-Pack game this year and asked me to go. I was stoked!!!
Why the Packers lost? I'll tell you why the bums lost. They lost because only, HMMM........ lets say about 5 players came to play yesterday cause they love the game as i do and the rest of the players came just because they have to so they can get paid. I am 31 and have been a loyal Packer fan since 5yrs old when my uncle introduced me to the game of football. Since that day i loved my home team which is the GreenBay Packers. I don't just not love my team anymore, but the Nfl has made me lose love for the game and my team.AND A 26yr loyal fan is not a bandwagon jumper when they have finally had enough after 26yrs.Why i hate the Nfl and my team & why the Packers lost? Loving the game of football i played immediately when i could. In High School i had all the fundamentals and all the knowledge to make a great player. But what did the game turn into at that time? A game in which i did not matter even with all my knowledge and all my athleticism because what mattered is what kind of historical background you could bring to the team or what your parents gave to the school. And those are the kids that played cause they got the attention for those reasons and those are the people in the Nfl right now who play just to get a check, not because they love the game. Thats why the packers lost. I played in Milwaukee Wi in High School for the Milwaukee Tech Trojans. We had a player named Michael Bennett. The teachers would fix his grades, he'd skip school all day and sit outside and smoke weed and where does he end up, in the Nfl just because his uncle is former Packer player Tony Bennett and because they can use him to get the school attention cause of that and he could run fast. And where is he now, well lets just say i made a joke a couple weeks ago because i saw a guy on the sidelines during the packers vs Raiders game hiding his face in a hooded sweatshirt that looked just like him, not hurt but on the sidelines cause he sucks and again this is what they let into the Nfl now. Not players that love the game. Those players were left behind in High School with all their talent because their parents didn't have enough money to give the school or didn't have a historical background. And if you did make it without those reasons then it was either cause you were lucky to get noticed one day when the coach wasn't catering to a guy who's parents just donated the school 5grand,or because the coach was being racist and only watching you cause you were african american and they'd figure you'd be better at sports. Not my opinion, but it was the opinions of my coaches. But again thats why the Packers lost. Cause my generation of players are playing and they care about nothing but money and can care a less for the game. Lets hope to see the Ravens win so we can actually see a man that loves the game in Ray Lewis, on the field with his whole family being a real man yet still crying in happiness due to all the work he's put in over his life not just in the nfl but since a child, and watch him hold that trophy with pride. A trophy named after a coach who would of walked off the field at halftime due to the packers patheticness yesterday and stopped coaching till a new generation of players came in. Damn players will play on the browns if they offered them enough money and be happy just to be making money not caring their team never wins anything.

WOW that was a terrific article breaking down every facet of the Packers loss. Why isnt this done for every team? Where was the breakdown of why the Steelers lost to Denver? The part about Roethlisberger being injured, pouncey being out, losing Max Starks during the game, not having Ryan Clark, Hampton and Kiesel going down in the first half?

Or lets have an article about the reason how the Texans lost. 3rd string starting QB, Mario Williams being out, Hell lets break down every game.

This Breakdown of the Packers loss was a bit overblown. Bottom line Packers didnt play very well, and more importantly the Giants did play well.

Same for the Broncos, despite all of the Steeler players out, the Broncos played better. Despite having a 3rd string QB the Texans had their chances.

PFT you went overboard to appease the Packer fanbase.

I'm not that familiar with contracts but often wonder if play would be different (I've seen enough bad plays, bad play calling, and bad execution over the past two weeks), if the player(s) or the coach(es) responsible, were fined by the team. I don't know who would make the determination but you got to remember these guys play for money.

I you see a running back who gets to the line of scrimmage and stops dead or runs right into the back of his 300 pound, 7 foot tall blocker, that guy should loose some money! Or the blocker who lets "his man" go blowing right by and gets his QB creamed. Or the WR who gets hit right in the chest with the ball and drops it. The K who lines up wrong (I've seen this twice in two weeks resulting in two missed FGs.

Or from the coaching side, we're not going to put pressure on the QB, we're going to control the line with our 3 or 4 man rush, put seven or 8 men in zones (which generally means that 4 guys aren't doing anything) and then wonder why the heck they completed an 80 yarder to tie it up or go ahead. There are plenty more, just look.

Rodgers missed on 20 passes and ran for 65 yards. That's what happens when a team runs into a good defense.

Maybe everyone underrated the Chiefs defense at the end of the year.

I said after the NFC Championship Game against the Giants and it warrants repeating. We have a troll roaming the sidelines that is absolutely clueless when it comes to game management. Had it not been for the blocked field goal after the mindless first half onside kick, the weight of the coaching advantage would have tilted even heavier in favor of the Giants. Going for a first down on 4th and 5 was insane, given the fact that the defensive woes were more pronounced on a short field all day long. Your defense had given you two straight three-and-outs. Force the Giants to drive the length of the field rather than putting your defnse's back to the wall.

I’d like to hear from Packers fans as to why the defense isn’t like it was last season. I only watched 3 games of theirs this season, so maybe they can give some better insight."

In my opinion, there are a couple of issues that plagued this defense this season. It starts right up front. While Cullen Jenkins may not be a Pro Bowler, the remnants of the d-line struggled to put pressure on the qb. Matthews was double-teamed at will - and at times they'd add a back to that mix to chip him.

With no legitimate pass rush, the secondary was exposed. Woodson was a year older. I think it may be time to find a high profile corner and move Woodson to safety. The loss of Collins was also a blow to the secondary.

No more annoying Wayne Larivee highlight calls.

"Rodgers hands off to Grant up the middle and OH MY GOD! A two yard gain! Dagger!"

pathetic tight end, dom capers can't draw up a defensive plan to save his life, and refs can't bail you out all the time. Packer fans (trolls, not the legit fans) will be silent from here for a long long time. Thank god.

For anyone willing to listen I am a Packer fan my entire life since 1965 I have suffered through some dismal times but unless you are a real PACKER fan then you will never have the connection we have to our team you are just fans we are owners and you can never have the feeling we do for all you Giant fans who are gloating now remember 2007 well unless you take the Lombardi trophy home it don’t mean squat this is not sour grapes but I think Tom Brady and company want another shot at you and after what they did to that Bronco defense I am glad we don’t have to face them.

Good gravey, sir.

By your own description, you’re at least 46 years old (and probably older than that). You wrote a 116 word, run-on single sentence all jammed into one paragraph.

Well, it may or may not be sour grapes, but it’s a train wreck nonetheless…

So much for the "new NFL"; you know, the one sportswriters have been prattling about, about how it's all about the "high-flying offenses" these days, and you can get by with a mediocre defense. Tell that to the Packers and Saints!
