The league needs full-time referee's...end of story.

The new, full-time referees will be held accountable for mistakes, like the rest of the workforce in America...that non-fumble call would be a "fireable offense."

If not for the call at the end of the Arizona game...the G-men are at home watching...bad calls effect nearly every game, and somebody should be held accountable.

The league needs to get off their high horse and take a lot of things away from the refs. Watching the playoffs there has been a lot of no calls that is quite confussing. There has been a lot of shake your head what the heck are the refs looking at calls. God-del fines players by calls by refs and yet he continues to put a poor managament of the game crews on the field. For a big business where wins are so important, to let the refs make calls that can and has cost teams games either to win or to lose. To many rules that are to much interpatation by the refs.

i know this wont be a popular post, but to say Leavy is a bad official isnt 100% accurate. Think about it the only reason you know who he is, is because hes the head referee, and therefore he is the one with the microphone making all of the calls to the audience. He isnt making all of those holding calls or pass interference calls.

If the ref who made the holding call, pass interference, and H2H calls had to tell the home audience, then you would realize and be able to put a face to the refs who make the bad calls.

Im not saying the calls in the Pack game were correct, they werent they were awful, but as the old adage goes dont shoot the messenger. Leavy isnt the one making all of the calls. All of these refs suck. The reason is because they dont have an idea on what to call.

I believe during the off season ALL refs should have to sit down as a group, and review every single game. And on every single penalty they should have to write down what they would have called, then afterward total up the results, and see just how many ruled one way and how many the other way. In that way they would see as a whole where they stand. They would have a baseline on where to begin. From there they can come to an agreement on these calls such as H2H.

Ever notice when Mike Piererra comes on TV even he is wrong 50% of the time on what the ref on field is going to call? Its because none of them have ever sat down and watched enough film and graded each other. Each ref calls it his OWN WAY.

Mike:
I totally agree with this post, but don't they already do it that way on all the scoring plays? I don't see the Ref going under the hood- he just announces that the play is under review and it seems to be resolved fairly quickly.
Why don't you just suggest they use that system for every review?

I hate the Packers, and I know people won't want to hear this, but...

The fumble could have gone either way. Yes, to non-players, Jennings arm was being pulled away from his body before he was down, but he still had control of the ball with that hand until it looked like his hip hit the ground, so I can see why people think it was a bad call, and why the refs called it like they did.

Second, Giants fans are the last people who should be complaining about refs because without a slew of REALLY bad/missed calls during the regular season, the Giants are watching the playoffs at home.

I think every play should be reviewed like it is in college football, upstairs and out of the refs hands. I believe it was the refs job to keep the game close as long as he could so nobody would take their eyes off the tv. A perfect example was the personal foul penalty for the hit on rodgers, it was no where near a penalty. But it keep the packers moving down field to score and give all the nations greenbay fans hope and also keep them watching the game. Yes i believe the fix was on also. Football just seems to be a made for TV sitcom anymore.

First I think Joe Buck is an idiot. Not just yesterday but throughout the season I've questioned at times if he is watching the same game I am?
Point, he was saying, the 'Packers have three dropped balls' when in fact Finley had four all by himself.

Also he has a tendency to harp on the air about a possible miscue by a ref and then all of a sudden its being reviewed. That tells me that someone in the review booth is listening to the game and gets a cue from him to take another look or stop the action.

When a call doesn't go his way he subtle suggest that there is an unfairness going on and the one team is getting screwed by the bad calls as if its a plan or something?

My issue is the refs know they have replay so they are tentative in their calls. The other game the ref was standing right on the goal line and the player clearly stepped on the line and instead of calling it a touchback he called it down at the one.
The referee stepped in and called for a review and it was obviously a touchback so why couldn't the other ref, who was right on top of it not get it right.

What is the argument against this?
NFL wants control on the field?

A serious issue is every play has an infraction, so how much time is committed to gabbing about every plaY?

Getting it right is important, but standing around waiting for this tedious process has got to go.

Maybe a simple red/green/yellow light gadget to get the booth info to the field.
Green, AOK.
Red reverses,
Yellow, we need to talk.

iPhone could have a simple app for that.
Another sponsor too.

I've been watching the NFL for over 35 years now. I've gotten pretty damn good at making the refs calls as I'm watching the game on TV. Occasionally, I have to wait for a replay if I'm unsure. I'll bet I make the right call 99.9% of the time before the ref turns on his mike and announces the decision. If a 45 year old stoner like myself can call the infractions from my couch with incredible accuracy, why does it take alleged professionals 5 minutes and they still get it wrong? I mean really, how hard is it to fix this problem. Give the head ref on the field an earpiece and let the booth overturn ANY bad call on the field with a simple shout to the head ref to stop the game and fix the call? That replay ref could even be out in the broadcast truck watching 10 angles at once! The current system completely sucks....and it's not like the league doesn't have the resources to fix it. Maybe they figure that the current system gives them more marketing value as we're all talking about the game well after Sunday. There's no such thing as bad publicity....but there is a such thing as pissed off fans who might just decide to tune out on Sundays!

hus10188 says:

I thought it was very fishy that Buck and Aikman other than the moment it was overturned never ever referred to that joke of a call at all throughout the rest of the game, as well as no further replays. That was blatant as hell and all they want to talk about is everything but the refs call, seemed like they were part of the conspiracy.

Gotta say I was so infuriated with that call, that even with Hakeem Nicks spectacular hail mary TD catch I didn’t even muster a celebration as I thought the refs were going to cook up a plan to prevent us winning in the 2nd half.

And don’t get me started on that Osi helmet to helmet penalty……..

Whoa, Giants' fans. Neither call had an affect on the outcome of the game.

In the 1st quarter there was an obvious helmet to helmet hit by a Giants' db on Finley that wasn't called, that could have given the Packers a first down. That wouldn't have changed the outcome either. Giants just played better on Sunday.

This is one of the rare things that the NHL does better than the NFL. Talk to them and model your system after it, NFL, and these situations will happen less.

As an aside, the Umenyiora roughing the passer was not as bad as the other calls. Umenyiora's helmet does make contact with Rodgers' helmet, and that is technically a penalty. It probably should not be, but it is. I have seen worse roughing the passer calls.

All of the other controversial calls were obvious mistakes that showed how bad the officiating was.

what about the spot on the DJ Ware 3rd down?

THE GAME WAS OVER AT THAT POINT WITH THE RIGHT CALL!!!!!

The NFL is flirting with losing a lot of fans over season-ending calls. I don't spend thousands on season tix, merchandise, and all the other BS to watch my team almost get fraudulently beaten in the final tournament.

Entire NFL video replay system needs to be scrapped in favor of the way college does replay. Get rid of the stupid red flags too.

Kick-offs also need to be returned to the old distance and adopt the college rule for pass interference. There should never be a 50+ yard penalty.

And Bill Leavy should be banned from post-season games if not fired altogether.

Sure the NHL has less calls to worry about in replay. BUt the NFL has a much bigger budget. THey can afford to have a replay official with authority at every game who will only refer to the NFL Central office for advice on tricky replays which is one or two a game and it can be used judiciously in games that are still competitive and matter in the standings.

Will it be perfect. No. But it will be consistent when hyou have a central NFL Office overseeing the entire replay system. THey have enough money to hire a committee of 10 experts.
