Report: Rams offer Brian Schottenheimer offensive coordinator job

Jets Schotty Under Fire Football AP

Sam Bradford’s third offensive coordinator in as many years will be Brian Schottenheimer.

The Rams have offered Schottenheimer the job, according to Michael Lombardi of NFL.com. The two sides still have to work out a contract, but Lombardi writes that Schottenheimer will accept the position.

The former Jets offensive coordinator met with Jeff Fisher over dinner on Sunday night. Fisher’s contract hasn’t even officially been completed, but that is expected to happen shortly.

This move may not be popular in St. Louis, but Schottenheimer was a well-regarded rising coach not so long ago. Like Bradford, he will try to revive his NFL career under Fisher.

We hope Bradford likes throwing slant passes.

    Damn, that sucks for Sam.

A coach known for mediocre offense hires a coordinator known for mediocre offense — to run a worse-than-mediocre offense. This is a big step up for the Rams!

  3. tfbuckfutter says: Jan 15, 2012 10:36 PM

Jeff Fisher is apparently never going to realize offense is part of the game.

  4. mikeyman321 says: Jan 15, 2012 10:37 PM

I guess Jeff Fisher did not watch any Jets games this year

  5. IMG says: Jan 15, 2012 10:37 PM

I guess his body of work with the Jets was compelling.
He’ll probably have Bradford throw 55 times while Steven Jackson is riding the bench.
    Be very afraid Rams fans.

I could see his career being like Alex Smith’s with all of these OC’s and head coaches. Feel bad for the kid

  7. trbowman says: Jan 15, 2012 10:39 PM

I’m sure he’ll look better now that he’s got a quarterback that isn’t terrible at football.

  8. dansilva5 says: Jan 15, 2012 10:39 PM

I don’t get it….. Wasn’t this guy part of the reason why Sanchez didn’t develope? Now, we expect him to help Bradford? Geez I hate such a great talent go to waste, Id take him over Luck or RGIII.

  9. trbowman says: Jan 15, 2012 10:39 PM

On a sidenote, if the Super Bowl turns out to be Joe Flacco vs Alex Smith – the Mayans were right.

  10. kilo0986 says: Jan 15, 2012 10:39 PM

I feel sorry for bradford, the guy has continually been having to learn new systems, on top of that he has to put with garbage receivers. I feel the guy can be a top 10 qb if given some consistency around him

  11. johnnyshore says: Jan 15, 2012 10:41 PM

A #1 overall pick in the NFC West who showed promise in his rookie year, then regressed drastically in his 2nd season, while enduring a new offensive coordinator in each of his first three seasons? Wow, kind of sounds almost exactly like the story of a guy named Alex Smith. Luckily for Sam, “It gets better,” you just have to wait a few more years, and you will be in the NFC Championship after putting your team on your back in an epic divisional round playoff game.

Sam Bradford will flourish under Schottenheimer. Just look at the success of Mark Sanch… Oh wait, never mind.

  18. sanchize6 says: Jan 15, 2012 10:58 PM

Wow.. I feel bad for you Rams fans. This guy absolutely sucks.

He’s terrible at game planning (Jets went over 20 straight games without a 1st quarter TD), can’t develop young players, can’t attack weaknesses in a defense, is an AWFUL play-caller (look at how he had over 60 passes vs the Giants this year), and most of all, can’t play to the strengths of his QB at all.

And don’t even think about saying “oh lol thats cuz Sanchez sucks blah blah blah”, because that doesn’t explain his complete failures with Chad Pennington and Brett Favre too.

    —————–

hahahaha oh really? That explains why he keeps getting passed over and not hired by other teams and was looking to move to college coaching, huh?

And yea, Chad Pennington and Brett Favre sucked too I guess, right? That’s why the year after they both left Schittenheimer’s offense they had huge seasons for other teams.

  21. asublimeday says: Jan 15, 2012 11:01 PM

@trbowman…u r the idiot. Im willing to bet StL doubles their win total next year with Fisher and Schotty. Both are good, not great coaches. They will not win a SB, but they WILL improve. Fisher > Ryan. Bradford > Sanchez. I do, however, like Sparano so Sparano > Schotty.

  36. green41563 says: Jan 15, 2012 11:36 PM

    I’m a Jets fan.

Been one since 1989, so I’ve seen a lot of terrible football. I saw the team go 4-28 in a two-year span between 1995 and 1996. It took me nine years to see my first winning season (1997).

But in all that time, and with all those bad teams, I never saw an offensive coordinator as inept, arrogant, and self-destructive as Schottenheimer. Never.

Whether it’s his inane fascination with elaborate shifts that never seem to fool the opponent as often as his own team, his obsession with the WR screen and other low-horizon horizontal passing plays, or his fundamental inability to run on third and short and pass on third and long, he will find a way to get as little out of his personnel as humanly possible.

He calls more horizontal short-yardage passing plays than any coordinator I’ve ever seen. We’re talking about WR screens caught at the line of scrimmage, seven-yard out routes, and seven-yard slants. Now these plays are fine when you throw the deep ball enough that defensive backs can’t sit on the shallow routes. But when nearly EVERYTHING you call is within 10 yards of the LOS, you invite defenses to sit on those routes, and that’s a big reason why mark Sanchez’s completion percentage and interceptions totals are what they are.

  37. cowboysfan18 says: Jan 15, 2012 11:39 PM

I thought favre was doing pretty good until he tore his bicep. Not to mention his WRs were L Coles and Cotchery…I think.

  45. sambradfordismyhomeboy says: Jan 16, 2012 12:07 AM

All I hear are either Jets fans or Jet fan wanna-be’s endless bashing of Schottenheimer.. did you ever consider the following about your team from this past season:
    1. You had two RB’s… Tomlinson in the “twilight” of his career, and that’s putting it nicely… and Shonn Greene and until the latter part of this , his 3rd year in the league was a BUST
    2. WR’s… you dropped your true solid citizen and player in Jericko Cotchery and picked up public enemy #1 in Plaxicco Burris and Santonio Holmes is a possible locker room cancer…
    3. Mark Sanchez… well, we know what you have there… but you do have a very solid TE in Dustin Keller…
Not to mention a blow hard, foot fetish, head case freak for a HC… maybe this next season he’ll predict that the Jets will finish 4th in the AFC East and behind the Bills, now that will be an accurate prediction, I’m sorry to say.
I’ll take Schottenheimer and Fisher over T-Rex and whomever he digs up to be the next OC in NY. I don’t say this to be disrespectful to Jets fans because that team has some great AFL-NFL heritage. I SINCERELY hope that team rebounds in the BEST way next season… From the rest of the country… PLEASE STICK IT to all of those loud mouth freakin’ welfare cases up in New England next year!!!!

  47. jasons81 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:21 AM

Favre and Pennington flourished (if you want to call it that) when they left his offense and played on OTHER TEAMS. So what you use as an example of Schotty’s incompetence is hardly an apples to apples comparison. And last I knew Schotty’s wasn’t the guy on the field doing 3 yard checkdowns. We’ll see in a year who was to blame for the Jets’ struggles… my guess is both Schotty and Sanchez will both have subpar years.

  48. cardinalscouldbeworse6666 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:31 AM

Sam Bradford = pre-2011 Alex Smith. Poor guy. Let’s hope five years from now, someone in the Rams’ organization finally gets a clue.

  49. randygnyc says: Jan 16, 2012 12:53 AM

Schottheimer spilled the beans on the interview about Sanchez. Had to in order to ever be considered for a job in the league. He had to tell them that Sanchez has little talent, is lazy and can’t get along with anyone. Each year, the offense had to keep getting dumb downed. High school kids can play on that team. Now, schott wants a qb who will actually progress with the right coaching staff.

  50. The Prophet says: Jan 16, 2012 12:53 AM

So let me get this straight. The rams grabbed a O.C. from a team that relied on its defense, and are getting thier D.C. from a team that relied on its offense? Hmmm, they must have one hell of a special teams coach in mind.

  59. zinn22 says: Jan 16, 2012 2:51 AM

Shotty is a fine coach. Sanchez is one of the worst QBS to play the game in recent memory and Shotty was still able to work the offense around his limitations.

Think about this Sanchez cannot read defenses, cannot throw the ball with any accuracy, has ball security issues, panics at the first sign of a rush, has fumbling problems, is the softest and most scared QB we have seen in 20 years and gave up 6 defensive TDs this year.

Despite all of these limitations Shotty was still able to work the Jets offense around Sanchez’s limitations. The mere fact that Sanchez is till in the NFL is a testament to what a good coach Shottenheimer is.

  60. mianfr says: Jan 16, 2012 3:37 AM

    Jet fan here.

I’ve always felt that if you gave a Schottenheimer playbook to someone else and let that person call the plays, you’d actually end up with a pretty good offense.

However, with him calling the plays… Watch out. He just has no concept of chaining together events. He doesn’t seem to get any kind of balance and will mysteriously go away from what’s working (look at Dustin Keller, who always seems to be really involved in the first half of games before disappearing).

Some of his plays actually are pretty bad, too. Wide receivers run into each other all the time. His screen passes are all of the naked variety–essentially quick passes with no upfield blockers.

You’ll end up with some good games, but it’s really just a crapshoot.

I never thought I’d be so happy to have Tony Sparano as a coach on my team.

  61. charlesdixon1 says: Jan 16, 2012 3:39 AM

  62. monropoobah says: Jan 16, 2012 4:43 AM

moving on from schotty was a smart thing for the jets regardless of how he does for the rams. not saying sanchez is great but he regressed this year despite improved stats. and the offense stalled repeatedly. oc has to be able to use what he’s got to score points. schott seemed incapable.

one thing is that with all the turmoil on the team , there’s a great opportunity to move forward with a new oc. the defense will likely be about the same which is ok. work in a new safety and linebacker, develop the draft pick for dl to improve the pass rush and they should be able to return to top 5.

sanchez can play better on offense and will benefit from a new start.

  75. nyjalleffingday says: Jan 16, 2012 10:43 AM

See, I don’t know exactly what Fischer is looking for in a OC, but if he was looking for someone who consistiently shows that he cannot:

    1) Gameplan to the strengths of his players
    2) Adjust those gameplans in-game when they do not work
    3) Attack a defenses weaknesses
    4) Develop players
    5) Run a competent offense
