Archie: Peyton likes his Indy roots

Archie Manning, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning AP

Eli Manning continues to win playoff games, which means Archie Manning will continue to attend them.

And that means we’ll get fresh Archie Manning quotes each week regarding Peyton Manning’s future. The latest: Peyton’s dad says his son prefers to stay in Indianapolis.

“Peyton kind of likes his roots in Indy,” Archie Manning told the New York Post. “We’ll see what happens there. If that doesn’t work and he can get healthy we’ll see. That’ll all work out. He’s just trying to get healthy.”

A lot is left unsaid here. First Peyton Manning has to get healthy. The other uncertainties in Indianapolis: Will Jim Caldwell remain as head coach? Will the Colts use the first pick on Andrew Luck or trade it?

All things being equal, it’s no surprise Peyton Manning would like to stay put. But that’s an oversimplification of a complex issue that has a lot of variables yet to play out.

Trade or get rid of a Franchise QB before a draft pick has taken one NFL snap. That makes a lot of sense.

I think the Giants should sign Peyton Manning. Let him play in the regular season because he’s useless in the playoffs, and play Eli in the playoffs because he’s useless in the regular season. hello dynasty!

Peyton likes the power he has in Indy. Manning runs that team and is head Coach of that team.

Manning picks who will stand on the sidelines and “act” like the coach.

Manning finalizes the roster and strongly influences cuts.

Manning decides who will be hired to “act” like a GM.

Irasy owns the team, Manning runs it.

    Really?

All the Manning sisters have to do is put a scowl on their face and and stomp their feet twice and Daddy will make things right.

  6. aaronsevivas says: Jan 16, 2012 12:04 PM

Colts with Peyton Manning super bowl contender/deep playoff team.

Remove Peyton Manning same personnel 1 win team.

If his neck heals half the league will have meetings on whether they can get him in my opinion.

  7. FinFan68 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:05 PM

We won’t have a clue on any of this until the first week in March. Why bother speculating further?

Thumbs up if you wished that Archie would shut up. Thumbs down if you care what he has to say.

  9. jasons81 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:07 PM

Does Archie still decide Peyton’s bedtime? He’s always saying “we” when talking about Peyton’s future.

  11. daysend564 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:09 PM

aka…Peyton likes to get paid $20M to do nothing and certainly wouldn’t mind $28M to do the same next year if given the chance

  12. 1buckeye76 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:10 PM

A lot of players who end up getting moved probably liked where they were originally. It doesn’t count for much if the organization is ready to move on.

How many Super Bowl rings does Archie have???

The big question will be ? If Eli wins another SB,and it is in the house that Peyton built. Does he become the best QB in the family?

  20. wethog66 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:25 PM

Not sure how a QB that has been to 2 SB’s, winning one, is useless in the playoffs. But since when has facts gotten in the way of people commenting on here?

  21. phlockar says: Jan 16, 2012 12:32 PM

They’re drafting Luck. No doubt about it. In doing so, Manning won’t be on the team. It’s a business and Luck is the future for this team. If Manning can get completely healthy, they would receive a ton of compensation in a trade, especially if Carson Palmer can get you a 1st and 2nd. Plenty of teams out there would release the farm for a healthy Manning.

  22. jeremycrowhurst says: Jan 16, 2012 12:37 PM

It could be worse — Archie could talk some more about Tim Tebow….

  23. bigbluefan1 says: Jan 16, 2012 12:38 PM

Yeah you all keep bashing the Mannings

Yet all but three teams would kill to have either of them behind center for there team.

There are two teams left in the playoffs that would trade the hacks they have at QB for either of the Manning boys

Keep on hating while the Mannings keep winning
Yeah Eli looks stupid look real dumb yesterday out playing the Great Rodgers

I would rather see 100 tv adds with the mannings then one more discount double choke

Off topic, has anyone seen a picture of Archie taken in the last decade where he isn’t wearing a doofus looking cap?

True, but what do you do??? keep Manning whose 35 and coming off an injury or let him go and get the future in Andrew Luck. i dont think Luck is better than Manning right now, but if what they say about him is true, he should be drafted and i think he’s ready to start right now, so i say try to trade Manning if you can.

  31. dallasholeinroofcowboys says: Jan 16, 2012 1:00 PM

Manning family is a great American family…Kudos to the Mannings!

  32. badtimeoutcaldwell says: Jan 16, 2012 1:09 PM

If anyone wonders why he’s “only” made it to 2 SBs and won 1, have you looked at the team he’s been working with??? They win 12 games 8 of the last 9 years and the one year that he misses they go 2-14 with essentially the same team.

2 Superbowl appearances is pretty amazing if u ask me…

  33. redrew says: Jan 16, 2012 1:11 PM

Of course he wants to stay in Indy….a nice climate controlled environment. Ask Brees how the whole outdoor thing is working for fraud indoor QBs.
Not too many indoor teams looking for QBs now, and Manning knows his legacy would suffer if he’s forced to compete with 3/4 of the QBs forced to air it out in any thing beyond a 72 degree windless environment. Check out Brady’s indoor stats then realize what a fraud Manning is.
And why does Papa continue to be his voice….Aren’t the Manning brothers adult males?

  34. turbodog1027 says: Jan 16, 2012 1:11 PM

Not many times when you’re able to draft the next Peyton Manning.

  35. lance227 says: Jan 16, 2012 1:13 PM

Why we dont talk about how a team that goes 14-0 two years ago can lose one (repeat ONE!) player and suddenly go 0-13. Why dont we talk about how a team can go more than two-thirds of the season with an incompetent backup QB before finally picking up another QB (who of note was on a team that actually went 0-16) who almost managed to win 3 consecutive games and screw up the “plan”. Why dont we talk about how a team that has had one of the best QB’s of all time for the past 14 years managed to pull off the greatest heist since the Brink’s robbery and will now have another great QB for the next 15 years?

Or why doesnt Sheriff Roger initiate an investigation? I mean did the 0-16 Lions have players like Addai, Garcon, Wayne, Collie, Clark and Saturday on offense alone, not to mention Freeney on defense. I mean….please!!!

  36. gmen1987 says: Jan 16, 2012 1:17 PM

Your right its a difficult decision. One thing you better do though. Try and put him on a team that does not face the Colts in the regular season.. Peyton is a man amongst boys and will most likely dismantle Luck

  39. nflovercollegefb says: Jan 16, 2012 1:31 PM

Joe Montana liked his San Francisco roots too but that did not prevent two decent years in KC from happening.

  40. justafanofitall says: Jan 16, 2012 1:34 PM

Get healthy Peyton you are still a better QB than 95% of them out there. He reminds me of the QB’s of the 60’s…..called their own plays. Peyton is give 2 plays each time and still has the option to audible. He knows defenses. Just get healthy and give him a health offense….he still has it. Go ahead and plan for the future and draft a QB but keep Peyton to teach him the ropes as Aaron learned from Brett.

  41. rambo888 says: Jan 16, 2012 1:47 PM

Farce didn’t do one thing in teaching Rodgers. He was to concerned with himself and being replaced by Rodgers.

  46. davidjcu says: Jan 16, 2012 3:28 PM

The biggest problem with the Colts pick is that there is no best solution, because their isn’t any immediate benefit from benching Luck, and by not trading Peyton, the team doesn’t fill its holes and weaknesses. The Colts are an aging team and not just at QB. The Colts are completely screwed if Peyton goes down again and Luck doesn’t have a supporting cast, or they have the same team as they always had with no improvements. I don’t understand the philosophy in sitting Luck if he’s the best prospect since Elway. If that’s the case he should start day 1.

  47. skoobyfl says: Jan 16, 2012 3:35 PM

Peyton likes his $ for nothing.

  48. shadylamp says: Jan 16, 2012 3:52 PM

The media is playing out every scenario except the one that will ACTUALLY happen: The Colts will draft Luck, Manning will come back and play for 3 or 4 more years. Luck will hold a clip board just like Aaron Rogers did and take over once Peyton retires.

  49. ppdoc13 says: Jan 16, 2012 3:54 PM

They fit together perfectly. A QB whose collar gets a tighter whenever he plays a big game and a loser city that is more interested in the Indy 500 than pro football.

Before it is all over, Eli will be recognized as the greater of the 2 Manning QB’s. Peyton will have the stats, but Eli will have the Championships. And that is how the greatness of a QB is measured, right or wrong. Just ask Dan Mario. He should be in the discussion of the greatest QB’s of all time but he isn’t. And while Peyton has one, he was mediocre in his one win and the cause of his one loss.

Let the flaming from the Indy faithless start in 4, 3, 2, 1……

  50. granadafan says: Jan 16, 2012 4:35 PM

Indianapolis is a pretty miserable and bland place to live, but for 28 million, you can make it work.

PS, is there another football dad who likes the camera as much as Archie?

  51. bigbluefan1 says: Jan 16, 2012 6:12 PM

Someone interviewed Archie and he said his peace

    Get over it
