You left out that there are rumors, the new GM Grigson is apparently trying to acquire Spagnuolo as the new Defensive Coordinator. I guess Irsay's plane made a stop in St Louis and Grigson has a history with Spags.

All in all I'd like to see the Colts give Caldwell and opportunity to show what he can do without Polians leash in the final year of his contract. Many of the pundits are saying the Colts are doomed to stay home for the playoffs next year anyways. What's the harm in seeing what he can do with a proper set of coordinators?

habsfanatic says: Jan 17, 2012 11:09 AM

Um, doesn’t Caldwell have a winning record overall as a head coach? And it wasn’t just Peyton that was injured but a whole bunch of other players too. I wouldn’t be upset if the guy gets a chance to bring the team back after a real tough season…
---------------------

Some coaches win BECAUSE of their coaching, and sometimes coaches win INSPITE of their coaching.

Sorry, but you cant refer to a winning record with Manning as your QB as the reason you should stay... Take a look at what he's done when he doesnt have one of the greatest QBs of all time: 25-63 in college, 2-14 in the pros... A combined 27-77 without Manning. Is he really the best they can find??? What a joke!

I can't believe they are keeping Caldwell. I almost find it unfair that Brady gets Belichick, Brees gets Sean Payton, Rodgers gets McCarthy, and Peyton gets... Jim Caldwell. These other QBs get offensive gurus to work with them, yet Peyton is basically forced to run the offense/team by himself.

Caldwell is not head coaching material. Period. No other team in the NFL would consider him as a head coach. Dungy basically handcuffed the Colts and agreed only to stay on during his final year if they made sure Caldwell replaced him. It's very sad that we will once again be at a disadvantage at the coaching position for another year.

Is Caldwell the best- no, worst – no…but right now is there anyone better…with that talent?

------------------------------------------------------

False, he is the worst. He took a contending team and made them a laughing stock in a very short time. This season proved that w/out Peyton, Caldwell is awful. I am curious as to what Dungy would have looked like in a similar situation.

As a season ticket holder since the Mayflower came to Indy (1984) I'm glad that they will announce (Tweet?) this decision before March 2, 2012: the day I have to mail in my renewal check for $1260 per ticket on row 11, on the 5 yard line.
I've sat through terrible coaches (Frank Kush, Rick Venturi, Lindy Infante, Rod Dowhower) all of whom look like Hall of Fame material compared to the inept Jim (help the other team with our time outs and no game planning) Caldwell

Time to clean house after the shameful debacle that was 2011 for them. That includes Caldwell. And may include Manning as well.

I'm sure some team will give them a 1st round pick and something else for Manning. Those picks would complement their drafting of Luck considerably.

I wouldn't hire Jim Caldwell to coach a youth football team. He is the Bill Stewart of the NFL. My guess is Peyton likes him because he leaves him alone.
Again, I can't see how the Colts can pay Manning the $28,000,000 roster bonus and then not use whatever draft assets they have to fill the roster out with guys who can help Manning win now. Luck does nothing to help the Colts win in the 2 to 3 year window Manning has left. Peyton will have to find a way to leverage his way out of town and at the same time save his reputation from being tarnished, but I just don't believe he's ready to be a mentor for his replacement just yet. This guy wants to win now, and if the Colts management decides that winning now is less important than winning over the next 7 to 10 years (which should be their position), he will ultimately shoot his way out of town.

It appears Caldwell is staying despite fan sentiment... hmm.

This is more of a decision on Manning than Caldwell. The Colts may try to keep as much of the "previous structure" around Manning to setup what looks like his final run. Looks like Caldwell and Christensen will return. I'd say Mike Murphy stays at Def Co (who took over toward end of season). If that doesn't work out, expect a clean sweep of the coaching staff.

Financially (look at the Salary Cap implications) the Colts cannot trade Manning, it would put them in a Salary Cap nightmare. He has meant too much to this Franchise and city as well to end like that also. Nor does he want to start over at 36 with such an uncertain health situation. The one game changer is Restructuring his deal. As it stands they either Pick up the Option or Don't (which likely isn't going to happen unless he retires) so don't expect a trade.

It looks like the Manning / Luck depth chart is a very realistic situation. I'm sticking with my prediction of 2 years for Manning and then transitioning to Luck.

Caldwell served as QB coach to Peyton Manning for six years - as irrelevent position as there is in the NFL - before becoming Tony Dungy's replacement. He took Dungy's team to a 14-2 record and a Super Bowl (which they lost) and has followed that up with a 10-6 season WITH Manning, and a 2-14 season WITHOUT Manning (the complete opposite ofhis first season!).

And Jim Irsay thinks THAT record deserves another season, with a recovering Peyton Manning or a rookie phenom????

As a Patriots fan I say "Hell yeah!!!!".
