Delanie Walker returns to practice for 49ers

Delanie Walker led all 49ers receivers with six catches for 69 yards in their 27-20 win over the Giants during the regular season.

After missing the last two games with a broken jaw, it’s looking like Walker will have a chance to play in the rematch. Walker was back on the practice field Wednesday for the first time since getting hurt in Week 16 against the Seahawks. According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Walker wore a black jersey that made him off limits to contact. Walker played a lot before his injury as part of the two tight end sets that the 49ers like to use and he would be a useful addition to the lineup should he be cleared to go on Sunday.

The 49ers were missing wide receiver Ted Ginn, who is battling leg injuries, at practice Wednesday. Defensive tackle Ray McDonald worked out on the side because of a hamstring injury that forced him to play less than his usual amount against the Saints. He was limited in practice last week as well, so he remains a good bet to play in some fashion on Sunday.

  1. welcome back, D-Love! with Braylon cut, Ted Ginn slowed by injuries (and lack of WR skills), and Swain/Hastings proving next to useless, the 9ers’ offense really needs another weapon this week to keep pace with Eli and his amazing corps of WRs. the trio of VD, Crabtree and Delanie should give us a fighting chance at home in what I have zero doubts will be a great game between two of the four best teams in the NFL this year.

  2. You cannot understate how big of a lift this would be for the 49ers. He may not be as explosive as Vernon Davis, but Delanie is really more of a WR than TE and still presents matchup problems for opposing teams. Just ask the Lions. With Ginn possibly not playing due to a calf/ankle injury, this is huge.

  3. The re-addition of DW would be great news all around. Helps a lot with block assignments and is one heckuva pass catcher. Add in his special teams contributions and this is big news in San Fran! All hands on deck gentlemen!

  4. Giants fan here….it will be a great game. No hatin coming from me. 49ers will be tough & it’s going to be a tight game. Alex Smith did pretty well throwing the ball our first meeting, so hopefully our rejuvenated D shows up this game & we can hit him in the mouth a couple of times. If not, he is capable of shredding us, just ask the Saints. I’m ready for Sunday…….

  5. this is huge news……everyone saw how bad the lousy atlanta and green bay receivers torched the giants secondary…..a guy as skilled as walker should really light them up.

Ummm what? Did you watch the playoffs? ATL receivers did nothing and the only time the Packers receivers didn’t do much.
