Discount Double Check jokes make it to the Golden Globes

By now, everyone has seen all the variations of the Aaron Rodgers “Discount Double Check” State Farm ads.  You may have even had the misfortune of getting “Show us what you got, what you got Raji” stuck in your head.

With exposure comes ridicule. We’ve approved roughly 443 discount double jokes in the comments since Green Bay’s loss, led by the ever-popular “discount double choke.”

Such jokes made it all the way to Hollywood, where Giants senior vice president of player evaluation Chris Mara attended the Golden Globes Sunday to watch his nominated daughter Rooney Mara.

In a fun story by Steve Politi of the Newark Star Ledger, Chris Mara recounts his day.

He watched as much of the game as possible on television before getting updates on the end of the game via texts.  While seated there, someone at his table asked him about it.

“Yeah, and the Giants just blew them out,” Mara said.

“I’m a Packers fan,” the guy answered.

“I’m sorry,” Mara said. “Discount Double Check that!”

Luckily, the guy didn’t take a swing at Mara. The two men toasted.

I’m a Giants’ fan and I loved those commercials even before the GB game. The Raji one is fantastic.

Why would you need a discount double check again? Virtually all insurance companies offer the same exact discounts, and they dont keep them a secret.

    Super bowl ring
    super bowl mvp
nfl mvp in about 10 days
2nd longest winning streak in the history of the nfl with a terrible defense
yeah sounds like a choke artist to me.

The only thing worse than those commercials would be if Tebow had one

Some of the stupidest commercials I’ve seen.

jarrman, I don’t know if people are saying Rodgers specifically choked. But, your argument doesn’t overcome the fact that the Packer team did choke when it counted. Choking is specifically playing well in games that aren’t as meaningful and then failing in the more important games/moments.

Didnt the New York Giants have the number 1 seed in 2008 and lose too Philly at home in the first game of the playoffs. Oh yeah New York chokes with the best of them. Just ask Reggie miller about that.

  14. bearsstillsuck says: Jan 18, 2012 5:31 PM

Rooney24: there’s no way they choked. A team that had an amazing post season performance like last year doesn’t just choke this year. A high powered offense like the packers is either clicking or it’s not. And when it’s not (e.g. Kansas city and giants), and with no defense to fall back on, its disastrous for the team. Not to mention the giants present the toughest match up for the pack out of the while nfl even when they are clicking, it’s no wonder they lost, but it certainly wasn’t from choking.

Fun commercial, but the reality is…whenever you have signature move like that, it will come back to haunt you.

Pack had a nice run, they MAY be back next year, but there are some hungry Lions waiting for that division.

    The commercial was great, btw.

  16. earthtopft says: Jan 18, 2012 5:36 PM

Aarogant Rudejerk deserves to be ridiculed for the move.

But not in a nice way.

    “Discount Double Choke”

  20. tlippert says: Jan 18, 2012 5:46 PM

bearsstillsuck: The offense wasn’t clicking because receivers were dropping balls left and right and on top of that, rodgers was noticeably gunshy the whole second half. All he could do was scramble. Don’t tell me those receivers weren’t getting open….he just looked nervous out there. I’m pretty sure that’s the definition of choking.

  21. omegaichiban says: Jan 18, 2012 5:57 PM

The receivers john brown choked, all except driver. Trying to run before the catch, fumbles. rodgers was a little off on some throws, but lay that stinkbomb on the wr/te/rbs. We knew going in the defense was suspect.
