Rob Lowe says he got his Manning info from “pretty-darn good source”

Actor Rob Lowe turned the football-following world upside down on Wednesday with a series of tweets regarding a rumor that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will retire today.

Ludicrous on the surface, the fact that Lowe has a friendship with Colts owner Jim Irsay gave the situation a bit more credibility.

Manning’s father and agent have since denied it, and Irsay has fired a shot at Lowe via Twitter.

Lowe has now responded, telling our buddy Rich Eisen of NFL Network that the info came from a “pretty-darn good source.”  Lowe said the source wasn’t Irsay, however, or anyone close to him.

The fact that Manning didn’t retire today doesn’t mean he won’t.  And regardless of whether he does, Lowe’s foray into the NFL made for an interesting afternoon and evening.

Has Craig Mortensen & Judd Nelson confirmed this ?

Irsay’s cryptic message about Deep Throat makes this very strange. That plus the $24 million on the table.

Pretty sure his source was someone named Peyote.

Between the GM chagnes, coaching staff firings, Manning, Luck, and all the free agent decisions (Mathis, Garcon, Wayne, Jeff Saturday retiring, Freeny being owed $19 million next year, etc..) this is going to be the story of the offseason… This team can be unrecognizable from next year from the Colts we’ve known over the past decade..

This website needs to have a section running of Irsay Tweets, Peyton Manning rumors, coaching decisions, free agent decisions etc… just to keep up

Peyton has been unable to undergo any physical exertion for the past year or so with his neck problems. His wife has had a secret crush on Rob Lowe since she was in high school. And, well, you know………..

  8. seanx40 says: Jan 18, 2012 9:20 PM

While I think Lowe is not a reliable source, I think the actual story will be correct. Manning has suffered an injury that would have crippled most of us. He has no need to risk further injury. He is richer than almost all of us. He is famous. No sense tarnishing his legacy. No sense ending up crippled.

  9. earthtopft says: Jan 18, 2012 9:24 PM

The leak was soon traced and clubhouse staff were ordered to immediately put Manning’s name tag back above his locker and retrieve his equipment from the dumpster.

    2. “Something” happens mid day
    3. Caldwell fired Monday afternoon
    4. Lowe tweets PM to retire

I thing the “something” that happened was that PM told Irsay that he had to retire.
The Colts had planned to keep Caldwell for PM’s sake.
When they found out he needed to retire there was reason to COMPLETELY gut the coaching staff and start re-tooling for the Luck era.
    I hope I’m wrong.

As much as I would love to see Peyton suit up in a Chiefs uniform, it would be far, far worse to see him carted out of Arrowhead with a Christopher Reeve type spinal cord injury.

God bless you Peyton, you are the best who has ever played the game. We fans have appreciated every game. Enjoy a long, healthy life! Maybe you could become the best head coach in NFL history also.

Totally agree man I have my surgery on Jan 23 for L4 l5 S1. My leg is nearly paralyzed from waiting forever for an HMO to take care of an average Joe.

Manning has the best sports doctors money can buy and a Risk of breaking the fusing in the Cervical area is not a risk I would want to take. One neck snap could him up bed ridden is just not something to chance.

Amazing career can protect his self and move on with his life.

  47. crambow says: Jan 19, 2012 2:58 AM

Media generators, regardless of origin, work in Irsay’s favor, one might think.

The mere hastening of this event is really a good thing for both sides. I have nothing but mad respect for Peyton Manning. Less than a handful of NFL QBs had made me cheer for them outside of my favorite team. Peyton would be at the top of my short list.

I doubt Mr. Irsay feels Manning will be an eventual on-field leader on another squad that will stop his Colts in a contention situation should they find themselves there, again.

I wish for Peyton to take consideration to his risk above all. I further want his career to end honored by the perceived and purposeful integrity he has displayed throughout his run from high school to the NFL.

Please don’t ‘Favre’ this, Peyton. Football could use a classy goodbye for a change. And with your name attached to it, there is little doubt it shall end any other way.

This actually DOES make sense. And now the Colts have started dumping all their other coaches on staff. Maybe Archie really DOESN’T know. After all if PM told Irsay he’s retiring the smart thing for him to do is NOT tell his family yet so they can all deny it with clear conscience.

  65. thejokewriter says: Jan 19, 2012 11:41 AM

I certainly think this report is true that Manning will be announcing his retirement. He has nothing left to prove and he should not risk his health. I’m very fond of the Manning family and I would suspect Olivia (Mom) and the wife is giving Peyton a big dose of good advise — leave now.

Who knows Eli might just have a chance a finally beating his brother at something.

    Geaux Saints ( Next year)

  67. patsfiend says: Jan 19, 2012 1:09 PM

Man, I hope Peyton sticks around for another couple of years, with the Colts or otherwise. Though I have to admit, I don’t know what’s worse, to see him go out this way, or to see him come back and get pounded / not be as good.

He’s always been the Magic to Brady’s Bird, and even though that sounds kind of sexual, the NFL could use a few more Manning/Brady matchups.
