Jets owner says Santonio will be back

Santonio Holmes AP

Jets (for now) running back LaDainian Tomlinson thinks the team needs to figure out whether quarterback Mark Sanchez and receiver Santonio Holmes can coexist.  If, in the end, one of them goes, it apparently won’t be Holmes.

Owner Woody Johnson tells Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that Holmes will be back in 2012.

He may be one of the best players we’ve ever had,” Johnson said.

Look, I’m no billionaire businessman, but that doesn’t seem to be the best strategy for dealing with a guy who has made himself into a malcontent by wanting the ball more than he’s getting it — and by apparently taking it out on his quarterback.  If anything, Holmes will feel empowered to be even more of a pain in the butt next season, since the guy who signs the checks says Santonio “may be one of the best players [the Jets have] ever had.”

The Jets owe Holmes $7.75 million in fully guaranteed base salary for 2012.  If he’s on the roster as of March 14, they’ll owe him another fully guaranteed $7.5 million fully guaranteed base salary for 2013.

And here’s the portion of PFT Live from Thursday where I babbled for a few minutes about the mess the Jets currently are facing.

This coming from a guy and a GM who said their Offensive Coordinator would also be back…How’d that work out?

  2. nyyjetsknicks says: Jan 19, 2012 2:42 PM

He quit on the team. He got paid. Does anyone think he’ll change? That’s the reason the steelers gave up a super bowl MVP for a 5th round pick.

  3. damnsureis says: Jan 19, 2012 2:42 PM

The best player the Jets ever had? He had 51 receptions for 600 yards. How did they miss the playoffs with him putting up such gaudy numbers?

Woody Johnson is what happens when a rich guy leaves his money to his stupid, no-talent kid.

  13. daveyjones1 says: Jan 19, 2012 2:45 PM

Santonio Holmes IS more talented than Mark Sanchez, HOWEVER, he has been a problematic player for two different teams now and that should be enough to get rid of him. As far as I know, I have never heard Sanchez throw his receivers under the bus. Chemistry between QB’s and WR’s is highly under rated. If Santonio has a problem in NY, send him packing! Negativity breeds negativity.

  14. nflsucker says: Jan 19, 2012 2:48 PM

Teams sink or shine by the decisions they make. They drafted a QB who showed “promise”, but hadn’t proven he could be The Guy. And they picked up a malcontent nearly three-strikes #1 receiver with every chance of being a human volcano, burning the team.

So their QB is either a late-bloomer or a never-bloomer, and if they cut the volcano, they have nothing at receiver.

Figure it out if you can, guys—you got what you believed you wanted.

  15. norseyapper says: Jan 19, 2012 2:48 PM

“He may be one of the best players we have ever had.”

Yikes! If you are purely talking skill set and physical ability then maybe he could be in the discussion of “best player we ever had” but if you are talking the whole WR package including disciplined route running, consistent effort, team first attitude, being plus in the locker room….NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  16. portlax12 says: Jan 19, 2012 2:48 PM

I dont really think they have a choice. Are they supposed to take away Mark Sanchez’s most dangerous offensive weapon? I mean Sanchez is already having a tough enough time as it is, I think not bringing back Holmes would further inhibit his ability to be productive. If Sanchez doesnt play better next year, the Jets are going to have no choice but to make a qb change. Taking Holmes away would only increase the chances of Sanchez continuing his mediocre play. I think the coaching staff and ownership need to bring these two guys together and tell them to stop acting like 15 year old girls and play some football.

  18. thatobnoxiousguy says: Jan 19, 2012 2:54 PM

Now the JETS will certainly, without a doubt, guarenteed, win the Super Bowl.
    Rex Ryan

  19. whatthehellisansky says: Jan 19, 2012 2:55 PM

Santonio has to go.. the jets are just in denial. Does anyone see another resolution here?

7.5 mil is tough to eat – but its much easier to swallow than 15 mil once he throws his first fit (which my money says will happen march 15th.)

  20. pastabelly says: Jan 19, 2012 2:55 PM

LT was right. But as usual, LT should have kept his comments to himself. If that’s the respect he gives Ryan and the organization that paid him well to be a role player, then LT fits right in to what he is criticizing.

  21. carmelaanthonysoprano says: Jan 19, 2012 2:56 PM

I think that most Jets fans would love for him to get cut or traded, but the reality is that they are stuck with him.

He’s extremely talented, but in addition to being a locker room cancer, he doesn’t block, and he runs sloppy routes. He’s much better suited as an explosive #2 than a feature WR.

  22. dd2189 says: Jan 19, 2012 2:56 PM

  23. spharrgcs says: Jan 19, 2012 2:56 PM

Then we’ll see the real Santonio again.
That zebra ain’t changing its stripes anytime soon.

  27. rando74 says: Jan 19, 2012 2:59 PM

Santonio Holmes is T.O. version 2. He made one HUGE catch and is super talented. He’ll be a malcontent his whole career but he’ll continue to get paid because he is that good. Pretty soon he’ll be doing bear crawls in his back yard or push-ups on his porch or whatever and claiming to be ecstatic to play mnor league football in Kansas. People, it isnt news if its the same thing every day. So this is not news.

It’s just infectious. The owner goes on record calling him one of the best players they’ve ever had? Does Woody have any clue how that makes the rest of the team feel seeing as Holmes ruined most of the season?

How exactly do some of these guys become billionaires anyway?

  29. dabeardown says: Jan 19, 2012 3:03 PM

“He may be one of the best players we’ve ever had,” Johnson said.

Really…. on the Jets he has never had more than 52 catches, or more than 750 yds receiving.

This comment is a slap in the face to all Jets players who ever played there. He is by far the most overrated and over paid players on the team. Glad he is not on the Bears, I would rather have Roy Williams.

hey woody…..there’s this guy who works in the same building as you do, mark ross (jerry reese’s right hand man)….try giving him a call.

  34. promickey says: Jan 19, 2012 3:06 PM

Well Santonio Holmes will be back but there is a good chance that Tomlinson will not. Tomlinson on the field is one of the problems because he is old and not as productive. Moreover the Jets will have to draft or find some help on the offensive line but I hope they don’t ask Sparano for assistance in finding some OL help. He might suggest his buddy from the Dolphins RT Marc Colombo (the revolving door to the quarterback).

  35. beerbaron says: Jan 19, 2012 3:07 PM

Yes, Woody Johnson had the brilliant business plan of being born into one of America’s most wealthy families. Besides owning the Jets, isn’t he most well-known for trying to cheat the government out of $300 million in taxes?

Looking at his upbringing might award some insight into why the Jets baby their “franchise QB”. Johnson and Sanchez are two peas in a pod: Born on third base, think they hit a triple.

  36. goawayeverybody says: Jan 19, 2012 3:08 PM

  37. rmm1984 says: Jan 19, 2012 3:08 PM

Honest question for Jets fans. Would you be happy if they could trade him and his huge contract for a 5th round pick at this point? I’m a Steelers fan and at the time I was angry but they wouldn’t have drafted Sanders or Brown or picked up Cotchery if they weren’t desperate for WR’s at that point so it worked out.

  43. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Jan 19, 2012 3:21 PM

In the words of old man Bush: “Woody was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple.” Let me get this straight, SH quit on the team in the MIDDLE of the game, pouted, and now you are going to reward this miscreant with a vote of confidence? Good team building exercise.

  44. jetsflyinghigh says: Jan 19, 2012 3:23 PM

The Jets should give Braylon Edwards a call immediately. I know it sounds crazy for anyone to say that especially with the year he had in San Franciso (not even there anymore); however, he and Sanchez had a great connection, was actually a deep threat and helped Santonio get open. If Santonio isn’t being double and triple covered every play he can get the ball more often and won’t walk around with a sour-puss look on his face. Braylon will obviously be coming for cheap, maybe even less than what the Jets wanted to give him last offseason. He also won’t have the diva personality the Jets were scared of because he had a terribly humbling year between being dumped by the Jets and than the 49ers. I see it as a low risk, high reward type of move. Any thoughts?

Blind faith is going to be the undoing of Woody and the Jets. Now they even owe Santonio 7.5M for 2013. This decision has got to hurt Sanchez — now he knows Woody doesn’t have his back when Santonio starts complaining again. The Steelers made a great move unloading him. They do not miss him at all with all that receiving talent there.

  48. djones604 says: Jan 19, 2012 3:39 PM

With the 16 pick of NFL draft the Ny Jets select Kendall Wright from the baylor bears.

With the worst receiver core in the league , the jets will need to Replace Plaxico with Somebody who can atleast run a 40 under five seconds. Kendall wright can run a 4.3. It probably won’t matter much because Sanchize only likes to throw balls 7 yards downfield anyway.

    Mockdraftweekly coming soon .

There’s a real basic reason why the Pats, Steelers and Giants etc. win so many SB’s………their owners know where their place is and it isn’t on the sidelines, in the draft room, in the news, etc. Woody’s, Danny’s and Jerrah’s egos will never let them understand this simple concept. Makes it much easier for the other 29 teams to never have to worry about them being serious contenders.
