Ray Lewis vows to keep playing, Birk unsure

Ray Lewis beat reporters to the punch at his post-game press conference on Sunday.

“Is this my last game as a Raven? Absolutely not,” Lewis said. “Let me answer that question before somebody asks it.”

Lewis had an erratic game against the Patriots. He started out missing tackles and getting victimized in coverage, but settled down in the second half especially. He finished with 12 tackles.

The Ravens have now made it back to the playoffs seven times since the organization won the Super Bowl after the 2000 season, and they have yet to make it back to the big game.

“God has never made a mistake. Ever,” Lewis said via the Baltimore Sun. “Somebody is going to feel like this tomorrow, and somebody is going to feel like this in two weeks in the Super Bowl. And whomever wins it, that’s their year. That’s a fact, and there ain’t nothing nobody else can do about it.”

While Lewis was clear about his intentions after the game, center Matt Birk said he had to think about his future. Ed Reed didn’t talk to reporters, choosing to sing Teddy Pendergrass in the locker room instead.

  1. So we have to keep watching him do that stupid dance?
What’s it called “The Stab You Shuffle”?

  2. Ed said last week he was coming back. Birk needs to retire. He’s as much a goat as Evans & Cundiff. Wilfork kicked his rear-end all day long…same as Texans did last week.

We need a C, tackle, and linebackers and we’re good to roll…we’re not old & slow & $40M over the cap like some other AFC North team…

And to all you haters out there taking shots at the Ravens & their fans (49er, Giant & Patriot fans excluded)…how did your team look yesterday? Probably pretty good lying on a beach or getting in 18!!!

  3. and he’ll be another step slower next year….12 tackles is still damn good though, but were they all solo or are we counting “assists” too? are those official stats or the team stats?
i dont think his return surprises anyone. the real wild card is Reed…..i’ll be sadly excited if he retires, but will also concede that we’d be losing one of the game’s best defensive play makers.

  4. In this hide behind a screen and hate everything world we live in, I can only laugh and smile at the likes of all these Ravens hater coming out of the woodworks. With that being said, I’d strongly consider people go listen to Ray’s post game interview on the Ravens website, in which he made me proud to say Im a Ravens fan. My team has not one a ring under the current regime, but to go to 4 straight post seasons and two afc championships games, I couldn’t ask for a better ran team from top to bottom to root for. Oz will be back, Ray will be back, Ed will be back, and the Ravens, like only a handful of other teams, are structurally built to compete year in and year out and I really can’t complain about that.

  5. God never made a mistake
    ——————————-

Tell that to the family of the guy ur buddies killed while you watched…allegedly.

  6. I’ve been watching Ray since the start of his career and for the first time I started to see him slow down especially when he came back from that toe injury. He is not immortal and seriously needs to think about his near future. Does he want to stay too long? When he used to knife through a hole, he gets caught up with lineman. The slash and cut to the runner is no longer there.

  7. Gee, I wonder why my “what a great day to be a Patriot’s fan!” posts aren’t getting through???

  8. Birk got destroyed by Wilfork all night long. If that’s the level of play he can sustain in the future its time to retire.

  9. Birk will probably never recover from the beating he took from Vince all game. Sometimes it takes that to make you realize your day is over.

  10. I’m as much a Ravens hater as anyone but I have to respect how well and for how long Ray has played the game. The NFL is a better product today thanks to the contributions of Ray Lewis. Love him or hate him, he’s always exciting to watch and he always brings his “A” game.

  11. When Ray-Ray reties, it’ll feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart as a ravens fan.

Let me take a stab at what he’s going to say.

It’s murder waiting for his announcements.

  12. Ray can’t keep up with the speed of the game. Watch him closely, he’s too slow to be useful in coverage and never gets within 4yds of the LOS. He does make tackles but generally at the end of a decent run, where even 3 years ago he would have stuffed the hole.
How a player feels is irrelevant if he is not helping on the field. At what point does his inability to contribute actively overtake his contribution mentally as the leader/playcaller of the D?

  13. Hey ravens fans now you know how titans fans felt after their fieldgoal kicker screwed them .It hurts and it will be a long time getting over this let down. Now titans fans you can relax and enjoy the ravens fans going through what you did.

spoken like a bitter loser…not a good look….not to mention that the same will be said of your team in 2 weeks…..so……not sure where you were going with that one….you ended the season the same way we did….with an L, on a relatively easy play (or at least one you expect your team to make 100% of the time) when it mattered most

  15. The rest of the nfl is glad youre bringing your shell of a hall of fame linebacker back for another year of getting tooled around by the likes of marshawn lynch!

  16. I love what Ray has done for the the Ravens over the years, but I’m not sure how I feel about this.

I’m sure he will produce some signature Ray Lewis plays next year, but there will be a fair number of times he gets beaten too. The drop off from 2010 to 2011 was pretty significant and he was still a good player.

I’ll be okay with it if he recognizes that he may need to come out in passing situations, etc. but I’m not sure his ego will allow that.

Also, hope Ed comes back. That’s a man who deserves a ring, and his best chance might have just been booted wide left.

Why would you feel the need to insult another team (of course we all know to what team you are referring)? Feeling a little insecure maybe? It is one thing to have an excellent regular season and a completely different thing to be able to win games in the playoffs…as the Ratbirds well know! You can talk all the smack you want but realize that the Steelers have been to two SB’s since the last time the Ravens went.

  18. He got beat a couple times yesterday, but overall played a strong game, and his post-game comments were strong as well. I thought for sure he was going to say something nutty, but he did not.

All depends what he is getting paid. If he’s willing to be a leader, come off the field in situations, and not gripe about it (I would guess he’d be fine with that)… then keep him. I can’t see him putting on another uniform.

Guys like him are so valuable. Pats miss having a guy like Bruschi around, believe me.

Dude, give it up. Ravens fans do as much provocation, mouth-running, and “hating on” of other teams as anyone else, so don’t act like the Ravens are some kind of poor child in that regard. Furthermore, look above – there’s not that much Raven-hating going on (no more than would pop up in an article on any other team), so your comment doesn’t even apply. That chip on your shoulder isn’t too flattering.

At any rate … As a Steeler fan, I like having Lewis and Reed out there on the field, so when the retirement talk pops up periodically, it’s kind of a let down. It’ll be strange to see a Steeler/Raven game without dudes like Lewis, Reed, and Ward getting in the mix ever year, but what are you gonna do.

  20. “God has never made a mistake. Ever,”

Not so sure about that, Ray.

Have you ever seen a flamingo’s knees?

    They are backwards.

  21. As a Steeler fan this is exciting news. It will be great to see Ray Ray pile jumping, flying around post tackle(made by somebody else), and speaking of his love of God and the Criminal Defense System in Atlanta.

Now if we could just hear that Flacco has been locked up for a 10 year contract, this would be an ideal off-season.

PS: Next year, Week 1, maybe mix out the the Gatoraid for champagne, cause that is as close as this over-rated, wannabe Steeler team will ever get to a championship.

P.S.S.: I love the excuses. Watching that game I know for a fact, Santonio, Hines, Randle El, Ben, Troy, Woodley or Harrison makes the play to win that game….Ravens<Steelers even when they sweep 'em in the season series. HAHAHAHHAHAHA

  22. Lewis vows to keep playing. BFD, who the heck cares? Lewis is just an ole washed up murderer who should be serving a life sentence in prison rather than playing in the nfl

  23. If you’re dumping Gatorade on your coach in November, you don’t have what it takes to do it in February.

Yeah, cause lord knows Rashard “Ray Lewis broke my shoulder” Mendenhall has just killed the Ravens over the years. Have fun fighting for 3rd place next year, toolbox!
