Report: Raiders considering three, including “mystery candidate”

Miami Heat v Golden State Warriors Getty Images

ESPN reported earlier Tuesday that Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is the leading candidate to get the head coaching job in Oakland.

A report from our friend Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com has more information, saying Allen is one of three finalists for the job. It’s down to Allen, Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss, and a “mystery candidate.”  McKenzie says the process could end by Saturday.

While we try to think who the mystery man might be, it’s worth noting that the two reports don’t necessarily conflict.

Gutierrez and  Mort Scheftersen both say that Marty Mornhinweg is out of the running. Gutierrez says Pete Carmichael has also been informed he won’t get the job. It’s possible the Raiders are zeroing in on Allen, but two other men still have a shot if things don’t progress between Allen and the Raiders.

Hiring Allen would be a departure for the Raiders and new G.M. Reggie McKenzie. Oakland has a long tradition of hiring offensive-minded coaches, and McKenzie hasn’t worked with Allen in the past.

    NO TO DENNIS ALLEN,

u can NOT sell that to the fan base

the team was on the come up bc of the OFFENSE, the defense lost them games, so get a new D-coordinator and shoulda kept HUE

this guy allen, the worst and most un-inpspring hire ever

ppl arent gonna tune in to Raider games to support DENNIS ALLEN, WHO?

GET WINSTON MOSS – he cld be the next tomlin, go with marty

why didnt McKenzie talk to any established coaches ? – cowher, why

did he “laugh” abt Gruden coming back,

Raider Nation arent laughing, they wanted him back

hes on a power trip and hes ruining the franchise,

sports is cyclical raiders were bad the past few years, they were comin back , they were in the SB in 2003 , some teams havent made 1 appearence yet,

    this is ridiculous.

Dennis Allen has 1 year of D-Coordinating experience and none as a HC,

Marty’s eagles offenses are prolific !

    why not him,

thanks a lot , Raiders are over.

My favorite memory growing up was watching the Raiders kill Carolina 52-9 with great seats at the HOT with my dad, to win the AFC West in 2000. Gruden was the best coach we’ve had since Madden. A true Raider.

As Steve Corkran said yesterday, he’s like the girlfriend that got away. Raider Nation still loves him. PLEASE let the mystery man be Gruden.

In other words, it was always going to be Winston Moss.

All the rest was just going through the motions. McKenzie was just interviewing the Broncos O & D Coordinators to get info. McCoy knew this, dropped out and to save face the Raiders let it slip that Dennis Allen is a finalist. In reality it always was, is, and will be Winston Moss.

For what it’s worth, Raiders beat reporter Steve Corkran is currently throwing cold water on the “mystery candidate” theory right now in his weekly chat. He’s stated flatly twice in the past 10 minutes that there “no mystery candidate.”

  37. mpoles says: Jan 24, 2012 3:02 PM

    Who is this mystery candidate?
    Sarge? NO!
Rosemary the telephone operator? No way man!
Penry the mild mannered janitor? COULD BE!

Seriously, before everyone jumps up and down convinced that it’s Gruden, I wonder if Reggie wanted to at least consider an internal hire. Obviously not Waufle, but he might have thought about John Fassel or even Al Saunders. They’re longshots sure, especially as he has said he wants his own guy, but interviewing a member of the existing staff might make his own job easier in terms of getting existing staff to support him.

Since this is a fun game to play, let’s throw some other names into the mix as this mystery candidate:

Baltimore DC Chuck Pagano (yes he’s said he was glad to leave the Raiders, but that was in the Al days, and maybe things are different now).

    Jim Fassel

49′ers running backs coach Tom Rathman

49′ers wide receivers coach John Morton

    49′ers DC Vic Fangio

    Titans DC Jerry Gray

    Rob Ryan

Boise State HC Chris Petersen (unlikely I know, but the secrecy could be because the third candidate is a college HC).

and yeah, maybe Winston Moss could be the next Tomilin. who’s to say that Allen couldn’t be also? if McKenzie has worked with Moss for years, interviewed him for the job, but Allen is STILL the front runner for the job, i think that should be telling you something

The Broncos had two legitimate pass rushers, which the Packers don’t have. These days a solid consistent Pass Rush will make up for a lot of warts on a defense.

I have been a RAIDERS fan my whole life.

A season Ticket Holder for 10 years.

I am dissapointed in the seemingly irrational changes.

Before Hue our offense was terrible.

With Much of the key players being the same.

    We need a Defensive Coach.

    Agreed.

But a DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR is enough.

Make MOSS D.C. or whoever will make best use of the players we have or intend to add….

GRUDEN will inspire the fan base.

    GRUDEN will sell tickets.

    GRUDEN can call plays.

Hiring Moss, Allen, or the Mystery Canidate will not inspire this offense or anyone.

Much faith has been put in Reggie.

Stressing the importance of the the past.

The History and “former Greatness” of the RAIDERS.

    and SEVEN coaches since GRUDEN.

We do not resemble the winningest team in football!

Our 3 straight division titles with GRUDEN was the closest I have seen in my 25 years as a RAIDER fan.

Reggie talks about “going to work” “Steel Mill Workers” mentality or work ethic.

Few, (maybe nobody) was dedicated more that JON GRUDEN. Much has been documented about his lack of sleep. 3-4 hrs some nights…..the rest dedicated to making his team Better…..THE RAIDERS.

Jon understands and appreciates and supports the comraderie and participation of RAIDER greats in the organization. Respecting and inspiring player with Alumni.

One of the great traits of our former Leader Al Davis. Once a RAIDER alwasys a RAIDER. Taking care of the loyalty of the people we lead.

We have spent our $$$$ in merchandise, road trips, and tickets.

Many people have spent $$ with the RAIDERS losing there homes, cars, families, during these difficult economical times.

We look forward as fans to a release.

    Give us some hope.

Sacraficing for the team we adore, the image that has been sold to us…….

Hiring a NO NAME at this time will be a defeat in the mind of the FANS, the NFL, and hopefully not the Players.

Please make a statement, Address the concern of the RAIDER NATION.

Do everything possible to bring in GRUDEN. We want to hear NO from JON GRUDEN.

(Not, that the Raiders did not even try)

We know he has a sweet gig at ESPN. But that is the RAIDERS jog to sell him back.

Like person we loved and let get away, we try our best to bring them back into our lives regardless of the odds…….

And interview to humor us, Just to make us feel like you are trying.

We are at your mercy. Please do not belittle this.

    But like a bad relationship.

How much more suffering do you expect the FAN BASE to endure.

If Davis/Mckenzie mean what they say.

They should listen to the cries of many.

    Please don’t dissapoint us.

    Or, At least humor us.

    Thanks.

    A faithful fan.

    _________________________

OK yes, gruden is a dream, but DO YOU THINK JON GRUDEN is going to stay at ESPN forever?

NO, the man is going to follow his heart and coach in the NFL soon,

to be the man to revive a franchise twice? and win a ring with a team that he also BEAT in the SB – historic,

do you read about the stories of Gruden coming back to visit the bay area, we love him, hes a “rock star” , he’s an original Raider, he LOVES the Raider fans still, believe that.

when coaching rumors with Gruden arise, what do you want him to do OTHER then use the company line ,” I love it at ESPN , etc…”

but if Gruden really wanted to coach, ESPN would not stand in the way, he can ALWAYS go back to broadcasting when he gets older, he just has that appeal to the American people.

McKenzie wants to desperately create his own path and legacy as a GM ,

u say why cant Allen be the next Tomlin?

well free agents are NOT going to rush to sign to play for coach dennis allen ,

winston moss is cut from raider type of cloth , he’s got that demeanor of a Tomlin, his presence and connectivity to the players will be felt.

I dunno about Dennis Allen, look I got nothing against the dude, I dont know the guy , professionally or personally ,

its just NOT what the Raiders needed right now,

Dennis Allen is not an upgrade from Hue Jackson,

do NOT confuse Hue Jackson with Bresnhahans defense BLOWING 18 and 12 point leads to Buffalo and Detroit , and other games the Raiders were in the lead in…

it just seems the allen hiring would regress the team, period.
