Brad Childress close to landing job with Browns

B. Childress AP

The Browns had narrowed their search for an offensive coordinator down to two men: Mike Sherman and Brad Childress.

With Sherman expected to land in Miami, well, you can guess where this is going. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that Childress should be hired in the next few days.

Childress and Browns President Mike Holmgren are both represented by the same agent — Bob Lamonte. So is Sherman. And Browns coach Pat Shurmur.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Shurmur said he’d possibly be open to letting an offensive coordinator call plays, depending on the candidate. Shurmur called the plays and didn’t have a coordinator last year, which didn’t work out too well.

He should bring Naufahu Tahi with for that chilly checkdown offense

Why do you guys keep thinking having the same agent means they are going to work together? What coach or GM or owner will hire a guy just because he has the same agent as another guy already hired? That makes no sense.

Now, having the same agent is good for getting a guy’s name out there and for initiating introductions, but any GM/coach/owner who lets it take on more importance than that, is a fool.

  3. couldntthinkofaname says: Jan 26, 2012 10:38 PM

But what does Tony Grossi think?

  4. westnorthcoast says: Jan 26, 2012 10:39 PM

Saying Shurmur calling his own plays last year did not work out well is an understatement.

Surprised that they looked no further than a Bob LaMonte client (insert Tony Grossi eyeroll) and I guy who imploded in Minnesota. The did their due diligence on this OC search. I would feel better if they offered a $ 1M bonus if he does not speak a word to the media or fans for the entire 2012 season.

  5. snccoach says: Jan 26, 2012 10:39 PM

If Holmgren hires Chilly they need to put in his contract that by accepting the OC position, he agrees to wear a real headset. He looked like Major Dad working at a call center.

No matter what, some things never change. Sorry Browns fans….I actually really respect you guys and feel awful for your plight. No matter how crappy things get, you keep your heads up and are generally dignified without having the undue arrogance of Vikings or Raiders fans.

Glad to see Holmgren hired a terrible Head coach and terrible OC b/c they have the same agent!

I still say the #2 Browns should make Mr. Hanky their mascot.

    Here he comes to save the day;
Chilly dog is on his way.

    The Browns offense will be dead last;
three runs to the left and a cloud of grass.

  15. seanincolumbus says: Jan 26, 2012 11:27 PM

If they hire Childress it will be the 6th Browns employee represented by Bob LaMonte.:

The President, The GM, The VP of Business, The HC, The OC, The QB coach.

  16. thefiesty1 says: Jan 26, 2012 11:38 PM

Maybe Sherman can convince the Browns to drop the talk of replacing McCoy and get them some offensive players to support the winningist college QB until that short guy from Boise played four years in order to break McCoy’s record.

Sherman is very aware of what McCoy did when he was at A&M. Cleveland needs lots more offensive help than at QB and Shurnur proved he can’t call an offensive game with no blockers and a disgruntled RB.

  17. rgledz says: Jan 26, 2012 11:40 PM

Holmgren is just adding another bad a$$ mustache to the mix. I think it’s because they have the same mustache, not the same agent.

  18. mikeeg says: Jan 27, 2012 12:11 AM

And the Browns continue to suck….

  19. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Jan 27, 2012 12:12 AM

Note to self: Don’t draft any Browns in fantasy football next year.

  20. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Jan 27, 2012 12:14 AM

I hope he doesn’t bring that tricky “12 men in the huddle” play with him.

  21. grannyvi4 says: Jan 27, 2012 12:41 AM

Great! Childress as OC for the Browns? Cuz he’s as offensive as they come.

On behalf of Vikings fans everywhere — good luck, Cleveland. You have our sympathies.

  23. mystereo says: Jan 27, 2012 1:28 AM

At least Holmgren just guaranteed another losing season in Cleveland.

  24. freedomispopular says: Jan 27, 2012 1:42 AM

When are coaches, GMs, and team execs gonna start realizing that changing out the offensive coaching staff every year is NOT good for a young QB’s development?

  25. theemployer says: Jan 27, 2012 2:18 AM

Best coach the Vikings had since Bud Grant.
    And this includes Jerry Burns.
Ownership caved to fan pressure in letting him go.
Browns picked up a good one with Childress.
A lot of “football” minds think he’s a terrible coach.
They’re entitled to their opinion. Good on you.

He’ll be a head coach again soon enough.
Tarvaris Jackson was his downfall. Hope Pete Carroll can develop him? I know he think’s highly of him.

Congrats Brad. You deserve the opportunity.

  26. rushbacker says: Jan 27, 2012 3:37 AM

Geez, Chilly? Talk about a factory of sadness. . . The Cleveland front office should be embarrassed to not set their sights a little higher than that.

Browns fans will like Brad Childress. He did a great job with the Eagles when he ran the offense in Philly.

  29. bigtomhurk says: Jan 27, 2012 5:03 AM

Hey, so-called Cleveland Browns fans: If you don’t agree with or like what Holmgren is doing, feel free to jump on some other team’s bandwagon.

  35. birdsflynorth206 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:16 AM

Childress is a bad head coach but he is a good oc, let’s not forget he was the oc of philly when they lost 3 nfc championship games and a super bowl. I’m sure Browns fans would be happpy with a wild card berth let alone a afc championship berth

  36. metspeed21 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:17 AM

As a Browns fan, and it hurts me to say this, Chilly can only be an improvement over what we saw last year. I’d even take him as a head coach over Shurmur, who will prove himself to be the worst coach in the league now that Caldwell is out in Indy.

  37. slowclyde86 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:23 AM

As a Browns fan, I am seriously curious why so many here are trashing Chilly. I agree he seemed to be ill-suited as a head coach, but as an OC, he seems to have an impressive track record. Any reason for the hate besides his personality?

  38. lbcoach34 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:27 AM

Dick Jauron, Ray Rhodes, and now Childress – that is a lot of HC experience for a guy who is not a very good HC (Shurmur)

  39. trooper586 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:43 AM

He let that lockeroom get so far out of control, it wasn’t even funny. I guess as an OC, that may not be his responsibility. Thats real good, because he will need time to come up with a run play, another run play, and a check down play for -3 yards. Those are not all that easy to draw up. Have fun Browns fans. I feel for you. I’m a Viking season ticket holder.

  40. brownsclown says: Jan 27, 2012 9:46 AM

I know they be closing in on Chilly.
First, he has an interview scheduled with Tony Grossi. Then he wants to meet with Braylon ‘hands of stone’ Edwards’s agent. He thinks the Browns might need a WR!

  41. raiderlyfe510 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:48 AM

    Programmatic non fit.

He had the Vikes a fumble away from the SUPERBOWL though. He gets a bad rap.

  42. diehardtwinsfan says: Jan 27, 2012 9:52 AM

As a Vikings fan that grew up in Cleveland, I have only one thing to say:

My apologies Browns fans… you deserve better.

  44. eecs2323 says: Jan 27, 2012 10:21 AM

Were the Vikings 3-13 this year because of Childress too?

  45. vikefan says: Jan 27, 2012 10:23 AM

as much as i dislike chili and his mindset, this may actually work out, just keep him away from making personnel decisions or you may be going thru 10 qb’s in 3 years. his x’s & o’s are good, but his “my way or highway” attititude made locker room devisive and lost control of team. Just give him one job to do & let him do it, but dont let him talk to players or make personell decisions. If Holmgren keeps him (and his ego) in check, it may work. Hopefully Holmgren can keep him from wanting to draft a qb every year.

p.s. – thank you cleveland for taking him off Mr. Wilfs payroll.

  46. steelwheeler says: Jan 27, 2012 10:24 AM

As a Steeler and Viking fan (from South Dakota) this is a great signing for the Steelers and the rest of the AFC North. This guy will do nothing to help the Browns get to the top of the division, let alone the AFC.

  47. purpleguy says: Jan 27, 2012 10:35 AM

Browns fans, here’s an honest opinion from a long-time Viking fan. Klink is a hard-working, knowledgeable and decent man. However, he: (1) has never been the sole OC (Reid was in Philly); (2) consistently refuses to adjust his system to his personnel; (3) is poor at making game-day adjustments; (4) always battled veteran QBs due to his inability to relinquish on-field control/audibles; and (5) lacks any semblance of creativity. My condolences.

  48. zappa69 says: Jan 27, 2012 10:40 AM

Great to see the Packer trolls back to what they do best. But does anybody else notice when they hammer the Vikings, Bear or Lions they end it with “Go Pack Go’?

  49. ballboy48 says: Jan 27, 2012 10:58 AM

Chilly was not the greatest HC, but he was actually a pretty good OC with the Eagles. Hey, even Josh McDaniels was a bad HC, and didn’t his offense finish last in the NFL with the Rams last year? Now, he is replacing O’Brien as the OC in NE!

  50. bensstinkyfingers says: Jan 27, 2012 11:28 AM

Save your apology’s this will be a good hire. Childress was very successful as an O.C. He may not have been a very good HC, but that is not what the browns are hiring him for. Anyone would be an upgrade from Shurmur handling that job. Anytime you can surround your young head coach with former HC’s with experience, that is not a bad thing. I’ll reserve judment until after the end of next season. The Browns, and Bengals will be dominating the AFC North within the next years, as obviously the Steelers are old and own a downslide, and the Ravens D is on it’s last leg, Ray Ray and Reed will be retiring by 2014. Things will be looking good soon Browns Fans!

  51. audient says: Jan 27, 2012 12:04 PM

Hiring Chilly would be a positive thing. This may sound like faint praise, but he’ll be better than nothing — and nothing is what we had last season.

  52. wadi79 says: Jan 27, 2012 12:58 PM

If you think that Holmgren is an idiot, look at the ring on his finger and what he did with the Seahawks. Furthermore, Brad Childress got the Vikes to the NFC Championship game. He has problems dealing with ego’s., RE: Randy Moss, but is knweldgeable with X’s and O’s. I am a long time Browns fan and, beleieve me, have not seen much since they returned. However, you need to give a new regime more than 3 years… Holmgren knows what he is doing, trust me.

  53. tndiver says: Jan 27, 2012 1:30 PM

I think that with Holmgren’s knowledge of offense, he tells Chilly to allow the QB to audible when the defense has stacked the box. THat was the biggest problem he had with Farve when he was in Minnesota, but Farve had more clout than Colt will here.

  54. bobwhitequail says: Jan 27, 2012 1:37 PM

General Manager Tom Heckert and senior adviser Gil Haskell are also represented by Lamonte.

Pretty much the whole thing is a good old boys network for Holmgrens friends to set them up when he retires in the next year or so. Holmgren and Lamonte have been friends since teaching together a long time ago. Randy Learner gave him the keys, I hope he likes how he’s driving…

  55. chazdenn says: Jan 27, 2012 2:29 PM

Well before we get too crazy about this hire anyone remember our old offensive coordinator Bruce Arians? He kinda sucked here. Then went to Pittsburgh and looked pretty good.i think there is a negativity that is the Cleveland Browns..we need a change like a helmet change, a name change and a color change.. Look at all the teams that have done that and the end results..Tampa bay,new England,Denver even the titans.. We should have let modell keep the colors.. Think dumb? Look at the results.6 super bowl titles between them to 0..grown men don’t want to run around in orange uniforms and goofy lookin uniforms.. They want to look tough..just consider it. A new mentality and a new uniform..maybe a new name.i had thought about this before I heard triv mention it and he is right
