Report: Chiefs refuse to pay Haley the balance of his salary

Getty Images

Earlier this month, former Chiefs coach Todd Haley made waves by indicating a belief that the Chiefs bugged portions of the team facility and tampered with his cell phone.  Haley’s next accusation could be a bit more tangible.

Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix says via Twitter that he’s “[h]earing the Chiefs R refusing 2 play Todd Haley the remainder of his salary, was terminated 4 cause, another words 4 a specific reason.”

In something closer to English, this means that the Chiefs refuse to pay Haley because he was fired “for cause,” which means that the team believes there was some sort of wrongdoing or breach of his contract, which ran through 2012.

It’s not unprecedented, but it’s rare.  The Raiders fired former head coach Lane Kiffin for cause, and the team eventually prevailed on the grievance filed by Kiffin with the league office.

That’s the procedure to which coaches agree when becoming coaches, sacrificing their right to sue in court and allowing any claims to be resolved by the league office, a forum that tends to be far more favorable to the 32 franchises who employ the Commissioner.

Given that Haley has worked for the Cardinals, and could soon be working for the Cardinals again, it’s hardly a stretch to ponder whether Haley is telling people like Jurecki that Haley has been stiffed.  As with the allegations of bugs and cell-phone shenanigans, Haley should just make the claim, if he has a claim to make.

The Chiefs org is becoming a laughing stock.

  2. trbowman says: Jan 26, 2012 8:45 PM

    Pony it up.

  3. jacunn2000 says: Jan 26, 2012 8:45 PM

I cannot say I blame them. I hope Haley took his blood pressure medicine.

  4. yelix says: Jan 26, 2012 8:46 PM

I’m a Chiefs fan, and I’m hardly a fan of the front office management these days.

Having said that, this is the coach who stubbornly started Tyler Palko for a whole month. If Pioli pointed that out as the “cause” for Haley’s firing, I would understand.

  5. skoobyfl says: Jan 26, 2012 8:47 PM

The Buffalo Bills should be collecting for the coaches they have assembled.

AFC West = AFL = Amateur Football League.

  9. backindasaddle says: Jan 26, 2012 8:59 PM

It’s seem plain that this is revenge by the Chiefs for Haley bad-mouthing the organization on the way out the door. On the hand, I get the feeling Haley is not exactly the warm & fuzzy type, nor is he very tactful, and it just may be that he brings this sort of ill-will upon himself.

  10. riverhorsey says: Jan 26, 2012 9:02 PM

The Chiefs and Pioli are dysfunctional. Good coaches in the future will pass on them pretty quick.

Hunt needs to dump Pioli and move on.

  11. cliverush says: Jan 26, 2012 9:07 PM

I think of Haley as the guy at work who gets fired and everybody says, “Thank God he’s gone.”

  12. denverhighrize says: Jan 26, 2012 9:16 PM

So it’s safe to assume that the parting of Haley and the Chiefs is not going well.

  13. azbroncos says: Jan 26, 2012 9:17 PM

Come on now Chiefs! Thought the organization was better than that. When your situation is compared to the Raiders there’s a problem.

  14. denverhighrize says: Jan 26, 2012 9:17 PM

So is Pioli from the school of Belichick or Al Davis?

    Twitter grammar. Stop the madness.

  16. buzzbissinger says: Jan 26, 2012 9:25 PM

After all those years of talking smack about the Raiders, now the sterling Chiefs organization is the ones not making good on contracts, bugging offices, tapping phones. Before you wise guys start chirping about the Raiders and Al Davis, check your own closet for skeletons.

What is this? Looks to me like the facebook post of a 15 year old girl.

Post like an man Mike Jurecki or don’t do it at all, this is embarrising.

  18. ridingwithnohandlebars says: Jan 26, 2012 9:28 PM

Jurecki really got the most out of his 140 characters.

  19. txxxchief says: Jan 26, 2012 9:34 PM

The cause: lousy coaching and demoralizing all around him. The aluminum foil in his cap also failed to meet the dress code. They should just pay him to make the issue go away though.

  20. Patriot42 says: Jan 26, 2012 9:35 PM

A fair trade for him starting Palko

  21. cappa662 says: Jan 26, 2012 9:43 PM

If a coach under performs like a player… They should be allowed to be cut and remaining years void ie josh mcdaniels is still getting paid for running the Broncos into the ground.

  22. mauicat1 says: Jan 26, 2012 9:44 PM

There is no love lost between Haley and the Chiefs, but this goes way past that. Haley must have said or done something that would cause the team to just not pay him. I think that this is their way of getting out in the open something that Haley said or did to the Chiefs that would lend credence to the action of non-payment of his contract. Otherwise, as secretive as this team is, if Haley has a legitimate beef, he will have to show some kind of proof of wrongdoing by the Chiefs. If I am Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli, I just let this drop. (But I am really curious to know).

  23. Deb says: Jan 26, 2012 9:45 PM

Has the league found any proof that the Chiefs were bugging their facilities and monkeying with Haley’s phone? If not, maybe the Chiefs consider Haley’s apparent lunacy a breach of his contract.

  24. tjacks7 says: Jan 26, 2012 9:47 PM

If the Vikings had to pay Chilly, you bums should have to pay this guy.

Although, there should be protection from coaches who run teams into the ground.

  25. raidadon says: Jan 26, 2012 9:56 PM

Dirty business. Pioli is a scheming turd and Clark could give a damn bout football. He a soccer guy. KC the center of the MLS universe. Just sell the team already.

  26. gooboy6 says: Jan 26, 2012 9:59 PM

If true, really bad move by Chiefs and they need to come out and explain

  27. vols84 says: Jan 26, 2012 10:00 PM

Pioli is a joke. No one here in KC has the stomach to go through many more years of the Patriot Way. Pioli rode the coat tails of Belichick and Parcels. Why he hired Haley in the first place is astonishing. He has two or three more years to get it done.

  28. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 26, 2012 10:03 PM

Just because you guys were stupid enough to hire Haley doesn’t mean you should be trying to weasel your way out of his contract.

  29. rtk23 says: Jan 26, 2012 10:07 PM

Seems like this could lead to no job options for Haley.

  30. kcfanatic says: Jan 26, 2012 10:08 PM

As a Chiefs fan this is embarrassing. I can’t believe I’m about to type this but…I wish we had King Carl back. Ugghh! Pioli was obviously never the mastermind behind New England. They continue to win, and we look like fools.

The Chiefs were contemplating firing Haley BEFORE the season started, and after winning the AFC West. There is no way the can say that the fired him “with cause”. Again, I am just embarrassed.

  31. mycrackie says: Jan 26, 2012 10:16 PM

The AFC west is a joke !!!!! Da bears.

  32. detroitcityryda says: Jan 26, 2012 10:36 PM

  33. trubroncfan07 says: Jan 26, 2012 10:42 PM

Good to be a Broncos fan in the AFC West right now. Chiefs and Chargers have always been cheep, and the Raiders are just the same old Raider. One step forward, six steps back.

  34. trubroncfan07 says: Jan 26, 2012 10:54 PM

vols84 I feel your pain. Had old McDummy screwing everything up in Denver for two years. I wonder if this is a Patriot strategy. Send these guys out to all the AFC Franchises and run them straight into the ground. Once the mission is accomplished they are right back to NE. See McDummy as proof this year.

  35. childressrulz says: Jan 26, 2012 11:01 PM

Why would a coach ever sign one of these agreements? No way i would give up the right to sue my employer.

  36. jr4real says: Jan 26, 2012 11:16 PM

Please dont send this dbag to pitt.

  37. mogogo1 says: Jan 26, 2012 11:29 PM

Interesting that they’d claim the firing was for cause rather than just deny him the money based on him bad-mouthing them in the press. I’d be stunned if coaches’ contracts didn’t include a stiff penalty for doing that and it doesn’t get much more negative than claiming they’d bugged your phone.

  38. kcrobert10 says: Jan 27, 2012 12:38 AM

If Haley has beef file a claim in court or with the NFL. My guess he has no standing so that’s why he keeps crying to the media. Beyond that the den fan who thinks that things are great for them next yr I laugh at u. Kc almost won this div again this yr, they were dead to rights at least 3 times and next yr we get our pro bowl rb, qb, and ss back and get to draft and hit fa with 30 mil in cap space. Ur team on the other hand is getting really old on the back end of the d. Also ur qb as the chiefs proved in the two games this yr can’t win if he has to throw the ball. Seriously if we start anyone but palko that day in kc we beat u bums.

  39. raiderlyfe510 says: Jan 27, 2012 1:10 AM

Dennis Allen really needs to consider hiring Haley as O Coordinator. We need more intensity in this rivalry.

  40. riverhorsey says: Jan 27, 2012 1:15 AM

    So, what is the ’cause’?

I admit I don’t follow KC too closely, but being a NE fan I really had hope they would have done better.

I do hope Romeo C. can right the ship. He’s a good man and a good coach.

  43. freedomispopular says: Jan 27, 2012 1:37 AM

I’m wondering if Dennis Allen would hire Haley. That dude would make it his sole lifes work to destroy the Chiefs AND YOUR Broncos for the smack McDummy laid on his team. – like a reverse Shanahan-curse he could put on them, LOL!

And uh, you havent made up for that 59-14 annhilation in 2010, Bronco fan.

AFC West = AFL = Amateur Football League.
A division that has a combined 13 Super Bowl appearances, winning 6.

Only reason more Raiders aren’t in the Hall of Fame is because too many are in, and Al Davis was universally despised, no matter how much revenue his innovations made for the owners and the visibility of the league.

The smackdown will becoming to your city soon, courtesy of the Best Coast.

By all accounts, Haley seems to be kind of a dick. Yet for some reason I want all his accusations of dirty dealing by the Chiefs to be true. That front office seems a bit sketchy.

  48. ironworker329 says: Jan 27, 2012 6:09 AM

Sounds like Haley found out he was bugged the hard way . Like “hey Todd was this you on the phone undermining the team?” Here take a listen to this tape on your way out the door.

  49. lawyermalloy says: Jan 27, 2012 6:23 AM

When a HC knowingly makes moves that are not in the best interest of the team, that’s cause for dismissal.

The NFL approved Kiffin not being paid and being fired with cause, the same should happen to the Haley.

trubroncfan: Ignorance is truly bliss for those that don’t understand what’s going on.

The Donkeys are in one hell of a mess, and everybody but you seem to understand it.

    Good luck with that.

  53. kurtrundell says: Jan 27, 2012 8:11 AM

Rumor around KC last month was Haley continued to start Palko to prove a point to Pioli that Pioli hadn’t done his job in securing a quality backup QB. Kind of funny, actually.

  54. chuckxx says: Jan 27, 2012 8:32 AM

Its truly, truly a SHAME what the Chiefs have turned into under Piglioli. They have been looking for a OC for well over a month now and they can’t even find anybody that wants the job. Just watch them promote from within because thats really their only option. Piglioli is a CONTROL FREAK. Would you want to work for this guy???????????????????

If ur gonna make accusations that your phone was bugged, etc then you’d be better off to just show the proof and let the league handle things. Accusations mean nothing if you are just flying off the handle about how you were fired/terminated…Don’t just make words, prove it and let the proof speak for you…
