Tom Brady: It’s just a game for us

Getty Images

With the increased media attention, a longer week away from headquarters and a million other distractions, the Super Bowl can be overwhelming for some teams.

Tom Brady is adamant that it won’t be the case for the Patriots. During a press conference on Thursday, Brady addressed the hoopla that surrounds the game and said that it won’t affect him or his teammates.

“It’s a football game for us,” Brady said, via the Boston Herald. “It’s the Super Bowl for everyone else. We’re going in there to try and win football games. Put all the distractions aside, and don’t let anything get in the way of our preparation, that’s ultimately what’s most important. This game that everyone will remember for the rest of our lives. Hopefully it’s a good one.”

The chances of it being a good one are helped by the fact that both teams have recent experience in the game. It seems unlikely that the stage will prove to be too daunting for either the Patriots or Giants thanks to the players that have been there before. Too much has been made of this game being a rematch when only 23 of the 106 players on the rosters in 2008 remain, but those 23, plus both head coaches, should ensure that everyone stays focused on the task at hand.

  1. It’s really nice to see a well thought out, well written piece on the site for a change. Nice work Josh.

I am, of course, a Giants fan for this game.

  2. I wish the pats to win. But even if they don’t they have already exceeded all my expectation this year. What BB has done with the filled up defense is amazing. They are surely in there for a long run. Very consistent team year in year out for us to get excited every year.

  3. As we speak… I am laying it all on the G MEN… come on…. They just went through the gauntlet of the NFC & your giving me 2.5 pts?? Really??

  4. i hate when quarterbacks act all high and mighty sometimes..its the superbowl against an opposings QB and Coach who ruined ur undefeated streak 4 years ago.. maybe hes trying to psych himself up for the game but even if thats true for u theres 48-49 others on the team who either never been or never won a SB so its not just anotehr game..and i hope he really does think it is bec that means the giants know what the game really means and will come out and win vs brady again! i never thought id witness one giants sb win let alone 2. esp after a heartbreakin loss in 00′ cmmmoooon

  5. It’s just a game in real life…entertaining, but still just a game.

That’s why i’m in awe of the death threats that kyle williams received. really pathetic if your life is revolved around a sports team

  6. Random question: If the Patriots win, does Josh McDaniels get a ring? Because that would be a little ridiculous.

  7. “The chances of it being a good one are helped by the fact that both teams have recent experience in the game”

You guys have spent the last week saying how this SB is NOTHING like the last one. So which is it?

  8. Sure it’s “just a game” for Mr. Bundchen. Only the “little people” could be so invested in a Superbowl(R) victory. He and Mrs. Bundchen will still have a bilion plus bucks whether the team (and its’ fans) win or lose. He may be more concerned that a long wait to play in the last game of the season might throw off his tropical suntanning schedule.

  9. It’s not “just another game” if that were true, every game would give you 4 Super bowl wins. Brady is shook, and I hope he can get his mind right before the game, if not, it’s going to be ugly.

  10. a lot of history will be decided after this game the ratings for tv are going to be off the charts

You do realize this is a quote from a Pats player speaking right?

And yes because not speaking by players means they will automatically win the game, just like the Packers, San Fran, and Falcons won because they didn’t speak.

  14. All he’s saying is that they’ll approach it like they approach every other game, and not get swept up in the media frenzy.

After all, Tom Brady is averaging one of these every two years.

  15. you all are taking his comment out of context. i believe Brady is saying don’t believe the hype. when its all said and done its 100 yards and 2 teams like it’s been every other week and there going to put forth their best effort to win like they do every week. but they can’t let the addition media attention, celebrity appearances and hoopla distract them- he says they have to “Put all the distractions aside, and don’t let anything get in the way of our preparation” because at the end of the day they want to win, not just be there

  16. When you go to a SB about every other year, maybe it is just a football game.Brady could hang em up tomorrow & still be considered to be one of the best ever, so I give the guy credit for still being able to nbe competitive year in & year out.
This team with the Awful D has been counted out all year.Just keep counting them out for 1 more game.

  17. More of the false modesty that makes people hate this hack

You can’t fake who you are for 10 years.

  18. I agree with Brady’s assessment of the game. If players start treating it otherwise it causes the mind to overcompensate for the adrenaline rush.

  19. If there aren’t quotation marks in the headline, you know pft is spinning it somehow.

Brady never said “it’s just a game” or “it’s just another game” – he said “it’s a football game”. As opposed to the hype and hoopla and parties and everything else it means to fans. If you read the link you can tell it’s a football game he is very intent on winning.

The lame excuse every Patsie fan has when you bash little Tommy Brady..

  21. Please stop talking up the idiot Giants like they are some unstoppable force. They almost got beat by Alex Smith. Gimme a break.

The Patriots are clearly the better team. The Giants defense was worse in points in the regular season than the Patriots and almost as bad in yards. They aren’t so great. Both defenses have played better in the playoffs, but the Patriots just beat a much better defense than these jokers.

The Patriots in a romp 44-17.

  22. Damn,

Some of the comments on here are pathetic! Hating on the best QB to ever play the game? Yes, people… He is the Greatest!
He has been a pillar of consistency with average receivers. He has had some good ones but he has made them relevant.
Taking shots on him and his wife? Classless. Not one of you wouldn’t cut off a leg to have what he has or accomplish 1000th of what he has!
    Gonna be a great game!

  23. You’re right. Some of the comments come from blind jet hatred. It’s almost comical actually.

Once a bozo, always a bozo. Fraud

  24. Uggghhhh The inteligence level of the posters is kind of sad…..

He clearly meant the team isn’t stressing and freaking out, they are preparing as if they would for any other game.

He did not mean that he doesn’t care or that he is bigger then the game.

No different than Brian Kinchen getting a ring for long snapping for the Pats in the playoffs only in 2003 and still getting a ring.

Bet most Pats fans didn’t even know this nugget. Figures, given that they had just become fans in 2001 and were still trying to figure out the game.

Keep on believing that, bullcrapper. Just like when Brady scoffed at the Giants player that suggested that the Pats would only score 17 points in SB42. Too bad that Giants player was mistaken though…since the Pats only scored 14.

  27. @bullcharger;

The Giants didnt get “almost beat” by Alex Smith. They got “almost beat” by the SF defense

IIRC, Alex Smith looked REALLY bad on SFs last possession in regulation. You know, the time when you have to work under pressure and might actually have to use your wide receivers.

The Pats defense does not compare to the SF defense, so this game should be a little easier for the Giants.

How do you know the Giants are talking? Simple, people ask them questions, get whatever quote(s) they want, and then they have the article for people to see. Other than that no one would know that a player spoke.

Same thing with Brady, we only know what he said because whoever wrote the article published it. It’s very easy to do. New York is a very big market and has plenty of articles. The way they are over there, they would make several articles just for a meaningless quote.

For instance what if there were three different articles written about Matt Light, Kevin Faulk, and Wes Welker concerning their thoughts regarding Super Bowl 42? That would mean they are talking a lot? No, they were asked about it, then quoted, and then the articles came with their respective quotes.

    Um..three words: Joseph. Clifford. Montana

2 time NFL MVP (Back to back , btw)

    THREE time SB MVP.

    8 time Pro Bowler

    NEVER lost a SB

NEVER threw an interception IN a Super Bowl

11 TDS passing IN those Super Bowls

I think there is nothing left to be said here.

  30. Yeah right Tom it’s just another game. I guess that’s why you just said you still can’t watch highlights from the last one……because it was just another game. LOL. Nobody’s buying the Patriots’ phony piety anymore. That ship has sailed.

  32. As far as a final score, the Pats have never, in the Belichek era, won or lost a SB by anything other than 3 points.

Nothing is going to change this year.

  33. I would love it if – just once – the Pats haters with their terribly original remarks (it’s known as sarcasm) would identify the teams they root for.

    Pats 34-17

  34. @lowleadman:

I had the very same thought last night. Which means a night of angst, sock throwing and hopefully..eventual….jubilation.

There is also a part of me that believes if the Giants lose it will be because of a fumble and if the Patriots lose it will be because of a missed FG.

Of course all of this is silly nonsense, because, somehow, some way, Belichick, Brady and company will find a way to win this game. If not, Myra Kraft will intervene…

  35. Yeah right Tom it’s just another game. I guess that’s why you just said you still can’t watch highlights from the last one……because it was just another game. LOL. Nobody’s buying the Patriots’ phony piety anymore. That ship has sailed.

Of course you’re rooting for the Giants ……. your Yets failed to live up to their Super Bowl Guarantee for the THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR!

Which is what makes it so much fun for Pat’s fans to troll Yets threads “all year long”.

    All hat, and no cattle.

Must really suck for you haters that THE PATRIOTS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!

    How’s THAT taste, haters??????

  48. As a Giants fan, I understand that everyone outside of NY thinks we got a lucky break with the Hail Mara. But if the Giants win this one, I don’t want to hear any excuses from Pat fans. Eli is on a mission as Brady is which hopefully should make for a great game. That’s all I ask for.

  49. I see very few Patriots fans predicting a blow out… if you look at how people are betting on this game the Patriots should be considered underdogs.

One thing the Pats have going for them is that Brady doesn’t have the pressure of having the “Perfect Season” on his shoulders – neither Green Bay, the Colts, or even Miami ever made it to 18-0

This year the pressure is off

Although Belichick has gotten a bunch of practice squad players and a converted WR/QB/KR playing DB into the Super Bowl, Manning is better than he was in 08 and the Patriots D is not as good

If not for Brady’s 3 rings already the Giants would be heavily favored

  50. It would be pretty amazing if the G-men can pull this off. Tom & Eli would of taken 2 super bowls away from Bill & Tom AND…. Eli will have one more ring than his big brother Payton 🙂

Exactly how much cap room would be needed to sign the likes of Bill Ring, Linvil Elliot, and Earl Cooper?

How about Mike Wilson? Freddie Solomon perhaps? Russ Francis anyone?

Don’t even try and sell me on either Dwight Clark or Roger Craig as destined for Canton.

Has anyone ever HEARD of John Frank?

You can throw out Jerry’s name but even under today’s salary cap rules, he’s still be under his rookie deal for BOTH of the rings he won while Joe was his starting QB.

Spare me. Joe is the best and has been the best of the modern era. Until someone comes along and has the same success AND numbers as JCM, particularly under the pressure of the Super Bowl, you can thumbs down all you clowns want.

    You know the deal.
