Brandon Marshall has reached out to Matt Flynn

Detroit Lions v Green Bay Packers Getty Images

Brandon Marshall is in recruiting mode. He’s looking for a good quarterback.

Marshall, in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, told NFL.com’s Jeff Darlington that he’s already spoken with Packers quarterback Matt Flynn about coming to Miami.

“You’ve got some guys in the draft, but there’s not too many guys out there just walking the streets,” Marshall said. “Matt is available. . . . . We’ve talked. I reached out to him. I get it from Ray Lewis. Around this time of year, players talk to players.”

As Darlington notes, there’s nothing illegal with NFL players recruiting other players. Ultimately, it’s not like it’s going to make a big difference. The presence of salary cap room and Flynn’s former coordinator Joe Philbin are going to be bigger factors to Flynn than a call from Marshall.

It’s easy to forget that the Dolphins already have a decent quarterback under contract in Matt Moore. But Dolphins management has made it clear they are looking for an upgrade.

“Obviously, Matt [Moore] had a great year,” Marshall said. “You don’t want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better.

“We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader.”

Matt Moore is apparently not that leader. Perhaps Matt Flynn will be.

Some football players shouldn’t be allowed to open their mouths.

  2. dino2997 says: Jan 27, 2012 7:40 PM

Brandon Marshall’s example of how to be a poor team player.

Disrespect the QB that played well for you last season while continuously dropping passes and then recruiting a QB that’s started all of 2 games by calling him a leader.

  3. myspaceyourface says: Jan 27, 2012 7:42 PM

Flynn would be the leader by default. He would be the only guy who knows the offense.

  4. jimmysee says: Jan 27, 2012 7:43 PM

Matt Flynn would do great in Miami — get a pad in South Beach and hit it!

  5. huskersrock1 says: Jan 27, 2012 7:43 PM

He is going to get franchised and Green bay will let the receiver go. Green Bay could get a number 1 for Flynn.

  6. pixelogre says: Jan 27, 2012 7:43 PM

Hey Mr. Marshall, how about you work on not dropping so many nicely thrown balls.

    Sincerely,
    Matt Moore

  7. jrcthree says: Jan 27, 2012 7:43 PM

Matt Moore a decent quarterback? Ya kidding? He needs to improve his accuracy. He is more of a marginal player until he learns how to place the ball in the right place.

  8. pettergriffen says: Jan 27, 2012 7:44 PM

    NICE!!!

Hes not even on your team yet and your already throwing your current QB under the bus.

Be careful Brandon He still might be your QB

This organization really knows how to crap on the people that are actually ON the roster and staff.

Hope Moore is thick skinned enough to handle all this after the Fins don’t land Manning or Flynn.

Kudos to Miami for being the class of the NFL…

  11. trbowman says: Jan 27, 2012 7:45 PM

Didn’t Marshall also want the Dolphins to draft Todd Mari….I mean, Ryan Mallet last year?

  12. cakemixa says: Jan 27, 2012 7:46 PM

Flynn will be the Kevin Kolb of 2012. Book it. Can’t believe the overreaction from 2 games.

Is there any doubt that this story will somehow, someway, conclude with Brandon Marshall being arrested?

  15. rpiotr01 says: Jan 27, 2012 7:47 PM

Here’s the problem: I really don’t see much physical difference between Flynn and Moore. He doesn’t throw the ball like Rodgers. He doesn’t run like Rodgers. Flynn is a good leader. He’s a GREAT competitor and he commands the huddle well. But I don’t know if he’s the kind of guy who can physically take over a game the way Brees, Rodgers, Big Ben, Cutler, Brady etc. can. I’m afraid Fins fans may be disappointed with him, especially if he gets big bucks and doesn’t perform right away.

  16. worldwidebleater says: Jan 27, 2012 7:48 PM

I guess he got that whole anti-social personality thing worked out. Now he’s a goodwill ambassador for the Dolphins.

  17. uscfan1988 says: Jan 27, 2012 7:50 PM

I love Marshall if we get Flynn he better hold onto the damn ball.

  18. grandmachine says: Jan 27, 2012 7:51 PM

I can throw six touchdowns in one game with the packers receiving core.

Brandon should just wait a few months and try to convince Peyton Manning to join the Dolphins.

  19. FinFan68 says: Jan 27, 2012 7:51 PM

Marshall is a good receiver but he ought to catch the clutch balls more often before he starts passively disrespecting his current QB. Brandon had way too many drops and most were in the end zone or 3rd down drive killers in several close games. If he caught just half of those it is very likely that the Dolphins would have been 8-8 or better.

  20. trbowman says: Jan 27, 2012 7:58 PM

“Flynn will be the Kevin Kolb of 2012. Book it. Can’t believe the overreaction from 2 games.”

Kolb went from Philly to a completely different offense in Arizona.

Oh, and there’s the fact that Kolb didn’t have a full off-season.

Flynn won’t have that learning curve.

  21. benh999 says: Jan 27, 2012 7:58 PM

That Marshall wants him is a great reason to not pursue him.

  22. mistrezzrachael says: Jan 27, 2012 7:58 PM

  26. bearsstillsuck says: Jan 27, 2012 8:11 PM

Marshall needs to learn to catch the ball before he criticizes his quarterback. Moore is good, but he needs a lot of help from his receivers which he doesn’t get.

  27. plum13sec says: Jan 27, 2012 8:15 PM

You can just see some things happening. I knew by week three that Andrew Luck was going to be wearing a colts jersey. I knew when Philbin was hired that Matt Flynn was a dolphin.

  28. mykl954 says: Jan 27, 2012 8:17 PM

Even without benefit of training camp reps, Matt Moore would have a winning season and an even better TD/Int ratio if Marshall could have held on to at least 4 end zone passes he dropped. It’s pretty disrespectful to dog the guy who resurrected your receiving career, never got on you for your brainfarts and realistically could start right now on at least 2 other AFC East teams, as well as a bunch of others. Fins stay at the least competitive with Moore and if there’s an upgrade .. with their D and a HC who isn’t a moron, look out NE cheaters!

  29. QuothTheRaven says: Jan 27, 2012 8:21 PM

I feel bad for Matt Moore in all of this. You really stabbed him in the back on this one Brandon.

  30. calmincali says: Jan 27, 2012 8:22 PM

I love all this BS about Moore being offended. The dude was brought in to be a back-up and the only reason he got to play is because Henne got hurt. He’s got nothing to complain about.

  31. dolphan22 says: Jan 27, 2012 8:24 PM

Besides Moore who do you have behind him..it may be interpreted wrong as to how it came out.the team loves Moore, but come on guys..its not throwing your team mate under the bus.it is just flat out honesty!if Moore is the qb,all he has to do is have thick skin and make everyone eat crow.I’m all for upgrading the position, but I still have faith in Matt Moore that he can do the job if there is no other option out there.

  32. cuda1234 says: Jan 27, 2012 8:28 PM

  33. randomguy9999 says: Jan 27, 2012 8:29 PM

Moore played very well this year, great decisions, accuracy, and super fast release….

Marshall dropped FIVE Moore passes that hit him on the hands in the ENDZONE….. Bess dropped a bunch of accurate Moore passes as well…. Both of them were in the top 5 in drops in the league or something like that…

Maybe Moore should be reaching out to some new WRs?

I really liked Matt Moore. He led those guys down the stretch and made some good passes this season. I think he’s worthy of competing for the starting job. He can improve, sure…but I don’t think that horrible that you want an almost never used backup leading the way.

  37. dolphan22 says: Jan 27, 2012 8:36 PM

Say what you want about flynn…but the packers prove over and over that they develop allll of they’re qbs.Brunell?Hasselbeck? So if flynn fails..he will be the 1st highly touted packers qb,but I doubt it.

Lmfao @ packers fans who think the pack is getting a 1 st round pick for Flynn. Sorry folks the raiders already traded firsts for a qb.

Flynn is garbage. He has zero arm and is nothing more than an average back up. Anyone who pays this guy money is foolish. Especially the fins who already have a guy who is probably better in Moore.

I love how people see one game and think the guy is the greatest thing ever. Omg the guy threw for 400 yards against one of the worst pass defenses of all time on a team that doesn’t run the ball…… Member when kolb was the next big thing because he was the first qb to go over 300 yards in his first two pro starts. How did he work out for Arizona. Flynn is trash
    Now and always will be.

In fact I would take Moore from Boise who I might be able to just sign in free agency after the draft. Not to mention the 5 or 6 guys who will be drafted in rounds 2-7 whom are all better than Flynn is.

Don’t let the morons here or at any other media outlet fool all the player personnel guys know this guy sucks. Don’t get your hopes up packers fans, there is no way on this planet Flynn gets franchised for which he would be owed over 17 mill and traded. He will just sign to some moron team and will be cut by the next year.

  43. realitypolice says: Jan 27, 2012 8:53 PM

Nothing says stupid like comparing Flynn to Kolb.

Not only has Flynn been 10 times better in the games he’s played than Kolb, but his college career was 100 times better.

Matt Flynn was the offensive MVP of the BCS championship game his senior season at LSU. Kolb threw lots of touchdowns for University of Houston, where everyone throws lots of touchdowns.

How many starts in Green Bay did Matt Hasselback have before he went to Seattle and wound up in the Super Bowl?

How many starts did Matt Schaub have in Atlanta before he went to Houston and played at a high level?

I don’t know if Flynn will be a star, but the Kolb comparisons are more than a little uninformed.

I would, however, strongly recommend that he shave that beard if he’s moving to South Beach.

  52. 69finfan says: Jan 27, 2012 9:08 PM

Brandon Marshall needs to concentrate on Brandon Marshall.. Learn how to hang on to the ball, especially across the middle and learn how to give 100% on every play he’s on field. He was 10th ranked reciever last year and tied for 2nd in dropped passes. Matt Moore 12th ranked QB in NFL. He completed 60% of his passes, Aaron Rodgers led NFL with 68% completion %. At 40 passes/game that is only 3 more completions/game than MM. IMO Matt Moore is a pretty good QB, not elite but pretty good and with more weapons on offnese could be very good. Is Matt Flynn really what everybody has him cracked up to be?

  57. gbrodgers1234 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:46 PM

First of all, most Packer fans know they aren’t going to franchise Flynn so I don’t know why anyone would say that.

Despite Flynn’s short body of work, he proved he can lead an offense that puts points on the board. Also, for people to say he benefitted from a great group of receivers is a little over the top. Every team needs playmakers to win games.

Just watch a replay of the games Flynn started. You’ll see he can just get it done!

  58. brutus9448 says: Jan 27, 2012 9:50 PM

  59. wannstache says: Jan 27, 2012 10:00 PM

Another bonehead move by Marshall. If he was going to do this, he should have done it privately. By bragging to the media about it he has most likely offended his starting QB for 2012. He’s lucky Matt Moore threw to him as much as he did in 2011, considering his lack of concentration and unreliable hands. And we can thank Ireland for bringing this idiot to Miami.

Say what you will about Marshall, but he’s absolutely right in this case. I don’t see how it’s a problem for him to acknowledge what everybody else already knows: the Dolphins need to upgrade at QB.

Moore played well enough to be a fine fallback option, but I can’t see how he could be viewed as somebody to go with as Plan A.

And as far as Flynn goes, I say recruit on, Marshall. If Philbin thinks Flynn is worth a shot, then Miami should go for it. He’s as good a dice roll as any; Flynn knows the system, and he won’t cost draft picks.

  67. trevor123698 says: Jan 27, 2012 11:33 PM

  68. stevenfbrackett says: Jan 27, 2012 11:42 PM

Matt Flynn has always been solid as a backup (or as solid as one can expect from his level of experience at the time). And he has sat behind the best in the league, Aaron Rodgers, who has bot shunned him as Rodgers had done to him. So he has learned a lot there.

But people are reading too much into what for any QB would be a once in a lifetime game.

I think Flynn could develop into a very QB but he isn’t there yet and wherever he goes – even if he goes to Miami with Philbin, there will be growing pains. And Philbin won’t be developing QBs like he was in Green Bay as everyone seems to be assuming. He’ll be too busy overseeing the big picture and relying on his position coaches and coordinators for most of the detailed development of players, just like any other head coach.

  69. phinfan says: Jan 27, 2012 11:57 PM

  75. hodag54501 says: Jan 28, 2012 4:01 AM

The Packers fans above are correct: it’s been widely reported here that the Packers WON’T use the franchise tag on Flynn. They will use it on Finley, the tight end, if at all. The Packers won’t pay Flynn MORE than Aaron Rodgers will make this season.
The Packers have signed Nick Hill to the QB pool and are said to be looking to draft a QB. Sounds like the team has moved on.
Dolphin fans: expect to see a dynamic offense. Say what you will about Mike Sherman, but his offense in Green Bay was good, and Philbin will also have the Mike McCarthy offense to add in. With Flynn pulling the trigger, look for lots of passing. The key will be what kind of defense Philbin will to Miami.

Not being a packers fan, I really hope they follow the advice of some of their less intelligent fans and franchise flynn. It would be hilarious to watch them pay him 17 M next season to hold a clipboard, incidentally much more than rodgers will make next year. Because all rationale people following the NFL know no team will give up a 1st round pick while also taking that kind of cap hit for a yet unproven qb with an average at best arm. Please franchise flynn. I would laugh all season long.

The thing I think is stupid……

If Matt Flynn is so good, why wouldn’t the Packers try to lure him into a longer contract for a back-up role? Wouldn’t you want to solidify your QB position for the next couple of years?

Thats why I don’t think Flynn is any better than decent. The Packers see an opportunity to add another draft pick, possibly a first rounder. This is all a mirage…

“Mike Sherman was fired from the Packers only because of a bunch of injuries and Ted Thompson wanted his own guy….he’s a good coach and will be a head coach again in the future.

Look for the Dolphins to get close or even make the playoffs in 2012.”

BS. Sherman was fired by the packers because he stripped the team of any depth while he was GM and because he was an epic failure in big games.

Any NFL coach who would call for a 2pt conversion attempt while up 8 points in a playoff game doesn’t deserve t have a job as a head coach.

This is the same guy who went for 4th and 1 in a playoff game because he wanted to be tough and score a TD but failed. Then when presented with the same decision later in the game as his offense had the opposition gassed an unable to stop any run decied to punt the ball away.

Sorry but Sherman was fired for being a dumbass on the sidelines and for being a terrible GM and Ted Thompson was right to get his own, now Super Bowl champion coach.

Matt Moore played well last year, but the reality is that he is nothing more than another stopgap, when really the Dolphins need someone who will be the starter for 10 to 15 years. Whether Flynn is that guy remains to be seen. That said, Brandon Marshall should keep his mouth shut. He’s not doing anyone any favors here.

Brandon Marshall reaching out? The ultimate team player reaching out? Run away, Matt, run away. You’ll need chemotherapy with Brandon on your side.

The Packers won’t franchise anyone except maybe Wells. Finley’s play of late does not warrant a franchise tag. They won’t need to franchise Flynn either because knowing Ted Thompson he already has a deal in place with someone or even two teams to unload him for a few picks.

Sorry I should of been more specific. The Pack won’t get a first rounder but maybe a couple of lower rounds.

    Pretty hilarious.

Marshall drops too many passes, sure.

But the guys been a class act so far in Miami. Guy says one thing to get media attention and a bunch of people maul him. Not a team player? Just shut up? Throwing QB under the bus?

People really need to get a clue. This guy has been nothing but a team leader in Miami.
    ——————————————
You must be joking. If by class act you mean, not being convicted of any felonies recently, absolutely. You obviously don’t watch many Miami games. He is the polar opposite of a “team” player. This is the second Miami QB he has questioned publicly, which equates to rolling them under the bus. Responsible for numerous drive killing unsportsmanlike penalties. Has dropped numerous TD passes this year, including 5 in the first 4 games. Had several passes where he clearly didn’t make the effort to catch them, to the point the announcers commented on it. Wherever Henne ends up, he should blossom without Marshall.

Marshall has the potential to be really good, but he seems to have left the highlight reel in Denver. Make no mistake, Marshall is about Marshall first.

Those that say Flynn sucks because he hung Madden type numbers on a bad secondary – just how bad is Philip Rivers then? He managed just 10 points vs the Lions.

Rivers is consistently talked about as an “elite” QB.

Flynn might not be the next Montana but he’s better than a lot of starting qb’s currently in the league and DESERVES a chance to find out just how good he is.

  87. cantonbound13 says: Jan 29, 2012 1:38 PM

Marshall should be the last person complaining about Moore. He was the most targeted WR this season when Moore was qb. If he didn’t lead the league in drops, especially dropped td passes, maybe the team would have made the playoffs.
I think Moore did a nice job, but as a long time Dolphin fan that was use to the years of Marino, I would like to see a pro bowl qb in Miami. Moore is a very solid back up & I’d be ok with him starting in case of injury. However, there is no reason to rip the guy.
