Irsay has the last word, for now

In a verbal spat that feels like a couple of adolescents fighting for the last word, Colts owner Jim Irsay has posted a message (where else?) on his Twitter page in response to last night’s politician-like comments from Peyton Manning. Which came after Irsay called Peyton a politician. Which came after Peyton vented about the current situation in Indianapolis.

Peyton and I love each other, that goes without saying..I humbly serve n protect the Horseshoe..it is bigger than any individual, including me,” Irsay wrote on Twitter.

Of course Irsay “serves and protects” what he calls “the Horseshoe.” It’s because he owns “the Horseshoe.”

He can claim that he’s merely the current steward of “the Horseshoe,” but in order for someone else to acquire that privilege, Irsay and/or his estate will receive a healthy sum of money, an amount that currently would be in excess of $1 billion.

Thus, saying it’s about “the Horseshoe” is another way of saying it’s about “the me.” The ability to point to “the Horseshoe,” however, gives Irsay a way to try to get Colts fans behind “the Horseshoe” -- and thus behind “the me.”

And not behind “the Manning.”
