Too bad. A mistake is a mistake, let’s be thankful no one was injured and he stays out of trouble. A great rookie year.

But celebrating NFL ROTY honors? He deserves as much consideration as anyone else, but I’m not so sure he’s the right choice.

The reason he only played 1/2 of the defensive snaps – in passing situations, is because he is overmatched in the running game. He also struggles covering targets in the passing game.

Not saying he eventually won’t, because he will – guys an animal. That’s not saying he was a one trick pony either, because he clearly wasn’t in a lot of ball games. Von Miller didn’t miss one tackle on the year (according to PFF) and had a true impact in the running game, while totaling 11.5 sacks and twice as many tackles.

It’s a close race, but Von is this years ROTY. It will be fun to follow both of them throughout their careers, very promising for both.

Wait a second – CBS news reported this?

I’m wondering if this is just some cheap PR for their upcoming series “DUI: Miami”

  24. nomesayin says: Jan 28, 2012 3:13 PM

Aldon Smith didn’t make many mistakes on the field this year. The only way to slow him down would be to hope he gets arrested before kick-off. The kid is a BEAST!

  25. phillyphever says: Jan 28, 2012 3:14 PM

Oh boy, he better not be the next Charles Haley. Too much talent to waste away doing stupid stuff like this.

  26. taco87 says: Jan 28, 2012 3:14 PM

Damn bad news at least nobody got hurt. Have to use better judgement next time the nfl has a number players can call to be picked up while drinking.

    Roger Goodell, line #1

  28. sterilizecromartie says: Jan 28, 2012 3:23 PM

    What a smug mugshot.

  29. cletusvandam says: Jan 28, 2012 3:32 PM

Forget the fact that every single player in the NFL can afford a limo, or a cab isn’t a car service that will pick you up so things like this are avoided provided to every single person in the NFL?
Do they think rules don’t apply to them or do they just not care?

  30. FinFan68 says: Jan 28, 2012 3:39 PM

I really wish the NFL and the union would come down on these guys. There’s no excuse for this kind of stuff. It may seem trivial but it’s not. There are several alternatives to drinking and driving but people are either too stupid, too lazy or too arrogant to use them. Why not make it an automatic 1 or 2 game suspension for any player or coach charged with DUI that either refuses BAC tests or comes in above the legal limit in the state they are charged? These guys don’t get it and they won’t ever get it unless there is a certain professional consequence that they are aware of. Not much happens on the first one so they all treat it like a “freebie”. They almost always make some sort of deal but that shouldn’t lessen the issue.

  31. tomtravis76 says: Jan 28, 2012 3:45 PM

The league and the niners will do nothing, as long as guys can play, nothing will be done, some public apology will be made, and the fans of the game will just wait until the next story comes out about some player who has gotten into trouble and he is sorry, while laughing all the way to the bank with his next game check. If you have talent and can still play the NFL will welcome you with open arms.

  32. dirtyjersey9er says: Jan 28, 2012 3:46 PM

Kid is young, how many of you always remembered to have a DD/call a cab when you were 21? He will learn from it.

  33. nflfollower says: Jan 28, 2012 3:47 PM

Hmmm. Tells us what we already knew, most of these guys aren’t very smart…. But in terms of next season? Really no implications, he won’t miss any of camp. Just stating the facts, not whether its right or wrong.

  34. mcgheestopher says: Jan 28, 2012 3:48 PM

    JJ Watt is better.

  35. greatestryan says: Jan 28, 2012 3:48 PM

This is the nfl’s fault. If he were on the probowl ballot, he’s be in hawaii. They don’t do dui’s there, do they?

  36. goldrush36 says: Jan 28, 2012 3:53 PM

Lots of players do worse and turn things around. Even more keep screwing up. I hope he takes the Ahmad Brooks path and grows up. Harbaugh is gonna rip him a new one

  40. prior0knowledge says: Jan 28, 2012 4:53 PM

NFL has a special number that drunk players can call that will get them a limousine to pick them up and a driver to drive their car home. So any player that gets a DUI is risking his life and strangers life for nothing. This is beyond stupid. Calling Aldon Smith stupid is insulting to stupid people everywhere.

  43. biglush says: Jan 28, 2012 5:23 PM

Common freakin’ sense – if you drink too much call a cab or a Town Car, just don’t hurl in the back seat of the Lincoln – that has a tendency to upset folks and it’s not good on the leather either.

It’s not like you can’t afford it – now how much do you think it’ll cost to defend yourself in court, and “buy off” your coach?

    What an ultramoron…….

You can take the player out of ‘Frisco, but you can’t take the ‘Frisco out of the player.

Reason #459 why the 40whiners still suck.

  53. 49erstim says: Jan 28, 2012 6:09 PM

Very disappointing to see a young man with such talent try to throw it away like this. He couldve seriously injured himself or others. I’m as die-hard a 9ers fan as there is, but there is NO excuse for this. For all the “homers” that wanna call this man a “kid” YOU need to grow up a little. we cannot keep making excuses for these guys. I know these rooks come in young, but COMMON SENSE says do NOT drink and drive. They have SO many resources available to prevent this. I dont know what kind of disciplinary action should be taken here, but I hope he doesnt get off scott-free.

  61. ravenator says: Jan 28, 2012 7:29 PM

I wouldn’t feel comfortable letting a “driver” drive my Italian super car either Aldon. Although I’d also be smart enough to know that drinking and driving and 0-60 in under 4 secs can’t bode well either.

Oh the perils of being young, successful and rich! How stupid can you possibly be? It’s really disgusting.

If any of you have never drank more than 1 or 2 drinks and gotten in a car, then cast the first stone. Truth is a lot of people drink and drive, but many don’t get caught.

Its all about making a smart decision to not even drive. I can’t believe Aldon had bad judgment to do this, but I’m sure it won’t happen again. And I hope Harbaugh does get on him about it. But sucks for the kid to get some bad publicity after having a year like he did.

  68. mcjon22 says: Jan 28, 2012 9:15 PM

  69. rallen69 says: Jan 28, 2012 9:20 PM

  70. qtownchawk says: Jan 28, 2012 9:39 PM

he should have ran from where he was drinking at straight to the backseat of a cab the same way he runs straight to the bench and sits down when he makes a tackle or sack on 3rd down.

  73. odbj says: Jan 28, 2012 11:34 PM

As to why he didn’t get a cab/limo…

It’s inconvenient and you don’t feel like a boss when you do it. That’s basically what it boils down to.
