Jets expected to name Karl Dunbar defensive line coach

Minnesota Vikings 2010 Headshots

Eighteen years after coaching him, Rex Ryan plans to hire Karl Dunbar for his coaching staff.

The Jets have offered Dunbar their defensive line coach position, and Dunbar is expected to accept, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Dunbar was a defensive lineman for the Cardinals in 1994 and 1995, when Ryan was the Cardinals’ defensive line coach and his dad, Buddy Ryan, was their head coach.

The Jets may move current defensive line coach Mark Carrier, a former NFL safety, to another position. Dunbar has spent the last six seasons as defensive line coach of the Vikings, but he will not return to Minnesota this season.

That’s gotta suck for Carrier, especially hearing it in the media before it happens.

I don’t care who we sign until Sanchez is gone. C’mon front office.

I’m sure Carrier was told earlier

What’s Mark Carrier doing coaching D-Line?

Dunbar coached the only position group that did well for the Vikings last year — the Jets got a good coach. His skin disease/condition is kinda creepy though.

This may be the best move Rexy has ever did. Dunbar is a great coach, ask any player who ever played for him.

Great move by the Jets, dumb move by the Vikes. The D line was one of our strengths the entire time Dunbar was here. When he got fired, he was a complete class act. Thanked the Vikings sincerely, not an ounce of whining. Good luck in NY, Karl.

Teams don’t sign coaches without first telling current coaches they are going to make a change. So for the kid who thinks he had to read this in the media first; you are an idiot. Coach Dunbar made multiple visits to the Jets facility before they signed him

Not sure my why idiotic Vikings fired him. He kept our DL beastly all year despite the fact that we had no secondary at all.

I cannot fathom as a Vikes fan how we fired this guy after having a top 5 run/ pass rush defense every year he was here except this year where nothing worked yet demoted out DC instead of firing him. We need to completely clean house and start over. Looks like it won’t be next year, maybe 2013 Cowher will still be available. Skol Vikes!

Why did Minnesota not keep this guy? The DL was the best part of the team last year.

Because Leslie Frazier is a joke of a coach. He hires two coaches from the Rams and Colts to replace our D Cord position and D line coach position who come from the only other two teams that finished worse that us this past season.

Leslie Frazier may be a nice guy, but a Rocky Balboa he’ll never be….
