If it ends up Peyton Manning is unable to play football, I would love to see him as an analyst. He’d be a natural and give great insight. As far as Irsay, I have no loyalty towards at all. He has proven to be like his father. Sad, I thought he was better than that.

Although it seems obvious that this is no way to treat your “glory years” QB it is the Irsay family so what can I say.

I think the Favre/Packers scenario braced everyone for this. I distinctly remember PFT reporting back in the mid 2000's that Ted was given the full green light to "blow the team up". At the time there was reason to question that with Favre firmly ensconsed and the team 10-6. And as we saw Ted replaced 99% of the roster and once Driver is gone that's 100%.

Point is, if PFT reports the decision was made weeks ago to move on from Manning, then the decision was made weeks ago to move on from Manning. Case closed!

It's so funny to listen to everyone who has this whole thing all figured out.......I'm from Indy, I am a huge Peyton fan, and I have great respect for Mr. Irsay and his ability to build such an incredible franchise. Both of these men a professionals in their respected industry, and their accomplishments as a spectacular owner and the greatest quarterback that has ever played the game will go down in history. I appreciate the job they have done, and I will respect the decision that ultimately lays in the hands of each man. This is a business......loyalty should not be used in this case to describe what either man should do to satisfy the personal emotions of each of us readers. Mr. Irsay owes nothing to Peyton, and Peyton owes nothing to Mr. Irsay. It's a business people and if you were in charge of it, you too would have to look out for the long-term success of your enterprise.

So what are the Colts suppose to do, hang on to Peyton Manning even if the odds are stacked against him from ever playing again in the NFL, trade the 1st overall pick and pass up the chance at another potential NFL QB, and most likely suck again next season?

The NFL is a business, professional sports are businesses. Always have been, always will be. Get over it. It's not your money that is being played. Most likely you tools don't have much money to begin with.

Just reaffirms my theory that most NFL fans are idiots. Time to hold NFL fans accountable for some of the things they say. Total tools.

cdwains says: Jan 28, 2012 7:26 PM

It seems to me that the smart money would be to give Manning the $28 million, and then work to trade him. You would think if (and that’s a big if) Manning is healthy the Colts could easily get 2 First round picks. If the Bengals can potetially get to First rounders for Palmer you would think the Colt could get a minimum of two first round picks. You give Manning $28 million, and then you sign two first round picks to 5 year 25 million dollar deals, so you paid 28 million for two extra first rounders, that comes out to 39 million for each pick, thats still way cheaper than what it would have cost you 2 years ago and your helping your team for the future.
----------------------------------------------------
Goobs,

You are a genius. You should have submitted your resume to the Colts weeks ago for the GM job. You have it figured out.

Is it just me, or does anyone else not see this as a big deal at all? In the end, Irsay is doing what's best for the Indianapolis Colts. He's trying to keep them relevant for the next fifteen years, and for that I applaud him. It's easy for him to be "loyal", but once he retires there would still a big question mark at quarterback. At least if you draft Luck now, you're potentially getting a future Peyton Manning down the road. And it's not Peyton won't get job opportunities -- whether it be through playing, coaching, or broadcasting. And it's not like he's broke. He just got paid $26 million to do nothing, has played out other wealthy contracts, and has a ton of endorsements. He's a pretty smart guy. I'm positive he is capable of managing his money. Really, it's not that big a deal. I know Peyton has made Irsay a lot of money, but that's how businesses work. Irsay is doing what is best for his business in long run. That's starting over.

It's funny to see Irsay act as if a drafted QB will be as good as Payton Manning....really? How many first overall picks have come and gone over the years that have not reached Payton's status? If Payton can still play this is insane! With Payton they are still a playoff team. I'm not saying that they shouldn't draft Luck of course...But having two or three years to learn from Payton while you are seeing playoff games is a great way to start a career. It's better than a complete rebuild which they will now do...crazy. How many twitter follower will Irsay have after 2 or 3 more years in the basement of their division?

Saw some remarks about loyalty. It runs both ways. An organization puts years of coaching and money into a player, then he bolts when someone offers more money.
A worker does a job for several years then gets a layoff. The business is struggling, so the years of loyalty mean little when you look at the bottom line for both the players and the owners.
Cutting Manning is the right thing for the Colts, and it's really the best thing for Manning, as he would be stuck with a rebuilding team. If Manning can play(yet to be determined) he could get his likelypick of teams. He could go to a team on the cusp, like Seattle or Arizona. Imagine a pairing of a healthy P. Manning and Larry Fitzgerald?

I’m convinced there is no longer a such thing as a “franchise quarterback.” You are until something younger and flashier comes along.

--------------------------------------

Really, are you this naive? This has been going on forever. Joe Montana in the last two years of his career blessed the Kansas City Chiefs with his declining talent. And even worse, he didn't choose them as a free agent - he was unceremoniously traded there.

stevenfbrackett says:Jan 28, 2012 8:10 PM

I’ve been saying for months – as have many others – Peyton please retire!

Think of your health and safety. One Suh-style ‘pull the guy down by twisting his neck’ play could leave you a quadriplegic!! And you know someone will try to pull you around by your facemask at some point because most teams have a guy who plays dirty like that and some have several.

You have more money than you, your children and your grandchildren will ever need and would have a several immediate job offers, too.

Retire now, as a hero, with full fanfare and undying love of the team, the city and a the League.

Staying too long can only diminish those things. Just ask Mr Favre.

It’s time. Go out on your own terms, as one of the best QBs ever, before the decision is made for you, likely by a broken neck. Go gracefully while you can still be the husband and father you want to be to your family.
---------------------------------
AMEN!!! Completely agree with everything you said. I like Manning, but even if he's healthy enough to play next year, will he ever be the same? Or will he forever be looking for the hit that finishes him off instead of playing to the level he used to? Some say Brady hasn't been the same since his injury. He's still good...just gets skittish sometimes.

And yes, Manning was huge for the Colts. He did a lot for the team and the city. He was also well compensated for what he did. So to say the Colts owe him....no, they paid him for the job he did.

I understand the passion for the sport and love of the game, but he seriously HAS to consider what's best for his family right now. He and his family are set for life. Don't take such a huge risk...take the money and walk away with some dignity.

Currently there is still no guarantee he will play anywhere. Michael Irvin was told after his neck injury if he played again he could end up a vegetable. "one too many hits with the snake" (from Aladdin)

And for those of you who wonder if he plays will he be as good? He hurt his neck, not his throwing arm. If he plays, it will be because he and some team (anybody's guess here) have the same mind and have seen him throw and pass a physical. So if he plays, whoever he plays for will be an instant Super Bowl Contender. Any Owners got $25 mil or so to pony up?

For all you people saying the Colts paid Manning $20 million this year for doing nothing ... are you sure the Colts paid him or did the Colts' insurance pay Manning the $20 million.

roberts09 ... please don't compare McNabb to Peyton it's not even close.
I will say this ... if Manning can play ...which ever team he goes to will have a better record than the Colts.

I’m really starting to not like the business side of the NFL.

When you can sign your franchise quarterback to a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract one year then turn around and cut him the next, is there ANY sense of loyalty?

=================================
Its not about loyalty. Its about puting the best team on the field. Do you want to win super bowls or do you want to hang on to players you like.
