For those of you that wouldn't at least put Peyton in the discussion as the GOAT because he only has 1 ring...you fail to realize 1 very important aspect of the game of football. The TEAM! Winning a SuperBowl is a team accomplishment. That's why they all get rings and not just the qbs. Bill Polian put mediocre talent on offense and let Peyton make them stars. No offensive line to speak of. And absolutely no defense. Take Brady away from his all-pro offensive line or Montana away from Rice and Lott and see if they can accomplish what Peyton has. He's taken a team with 2-14 talent to 2 SuperBowls with 1 win, 11 10+ win seasons, 11 playoff berths and record breaking wins over a 10 year span...that's right...beating Montanas 9ers. GOAT? Perhaps not. But you can NEVER remove him from the discussion.

@johntonioholmes-
If you have indeed studied game film since the '58 Championship, then you are well aware of Johnny Unitas.
Unitas held virtually every QB record there was at the time he retired- and he never played in a sixteen game season; nor did he benefit from the rules protecting QBs that today's players do.
I stand by my earlier statement that PManning, as good as he is, would still be the backup to this guy on the all-time Colts team.
As good as they are, Montana and Manning just don't compare to Johnny U.
Or to Otto Graham.

Dude, have you ever watched Montana? The guy is big-time, no doubt, but the one thing that I always noticed is HOW ATHLETIC HIS RECEIVERS WERE.

Those guys made great catches for him. He knew how to lead his team and he made the right reads on the field, but his receivers made those plays.

Marvin Harrison used to run straight and hold his arms out in front of his body and let the ball fall directly into his hands.

Take note of the receiver on the next sideline route you see. 90% of the time, they make a slight adjustment on their route to catch the ball and either slow down, jump, or cut inward. Manning's receivers almost never broke stride to catch the ball. 90% of the time, if they were on route, it was a catch.

Ever wonder why New England used to always beat the Colts? Look at Ty Law holding Marvin Harrison in those classic games . Harrison was not like Calvin Johnson--he wasn't going to out jump you or out-physical you at the line. The thing that made Harrison good is that he was a good route-runner. If he's off of his route, the precision passing game is no more.

No body does it like Manning.

To me, Peyton is the best because of his consistency. His career stats and record in the regular season are unmatched.

I know no one will agree, but when it comes to defining a QB's greatness, success in the playoffs and Super Bowl rings are, in reality, overrated.

They matter, no question, but there are other things that matter more.

The way I look at it, winning and losing in the playoffs is a fluke. It's a single elimination tournament in which one bad break that's totally out of a single player's control may send you home. In fact, Peyton might not even have one ring if in the 2007 championship game an Addai fumble didn't bounce into Jeff Saturday's arms. Would that have changed Peyton's legacy? I know that one ring changes perception, but does it really change the reality?

What I'm in awe of is how he got his team to the playoffs 9 straight years. That's an even more amazing accomplishment that two or three rings. The fact is, winning enough games year in year out is much harder and says much more about greatness than winning three or four straight every so often in the playoffs.

But even if you think the playoffs are all that matter, think about this: how many of his regular season games were do or die? How many games did Peyton play in week 16 or 17 that he had to win, and how did he play in them? Aren't they really playoff games too? I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine he's far and away better than everyone else in those situations, simply because he did, in fact, get his team to the playoffs all those years.

Here we go again with the Brady vs. Manning debate. This has been dealt with ad nauseum, but for those who missed it, the facts are this:
Brady in the playoffs is 16-5, Manning is 9-10. While many of those years Brady had a better defense, Manning always had a lot more weapons. When Brady was throwing to David Givens, Troy Brown, and Deion Branch, Manning was throwing to Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Dallas Clark. If you take Brady's statistical results while playing indoors and extrapolate them over a full season of playing a minimum of 10 games inside or in warm weather, he exceeds Manning's numbers. If you take Manning's numbers outside and extrapolate them over a full season of playing a minimum of 10 games outside, and with a percentage of those in cold weather, Manning doesn't come close to Brady.

Peyton Manning is a great, great QB, and he's in the discussion. Pointing out these facts doesn't detract from that. If anything, he simply has had the misfortune of playing during a time that one of the greatest QB's of all time was matched with one of the greatest coaches of all time. If the Patriots can beat the Giants on Sunday, the argument should finally be put to rest - Brady will have 4 rings to equal Montana and Bradshaw, and will stand alone as the only QB to ever start 5 Super Bowls. He will have done it with an inferior defense, and will be a circus fluke catch away from having 5 titles and a perfect season. And he's not done yet.

If you take Brady’s statistical results while playing indoors and extrapolate them over a full season of playing a minimum of 10 games inside or in warm weather, he exceeds Manning’s numbers. If you take Manning’s numbers outside and extrapolate them over a full season of playing a minimum of 10 games outside, and with a percentage of those in cold weather, Manning doesn’t come close to Brady.

Peyton Manning is a great, great QB, and he’s in the discussion. Pointing out these facts doesn’t detract from that. If anything, he simply has had the misfortune of playing during a time that one of the greatest QB’s of all time was matched with one of the greatest coaches of all time. If the Patriots can beat the Giants on Sunday, the argument should finally be put to rest – Brady will have 4 rings to equal Montana and Bradshaw, and will stand alone as the only QB to ever start 5 Super Bowls. He will have done it with an inferior defense, and will be a circus fluke catch away from having 5 titles and a perfect season. And he’s not done yet.

Manning’s receivers generally closed their eyes and let the ball fall into their hands.

Granted Manning played in an easier era than did Marino or Montana (although, 2011 was the easiest year EVER for QBs, and Manning missed that year), but I have yet to see a QB who was more precise and more knowledgeable about what the defense was doing.

This is coming from a guy who did a corruption analysis of the NFL, which required a review of much of the game film since the 1958 Championship game.

Manning did it the best.

No offense to Manning who I consider as one of the greatest, but to make dumb statements that his receivers made all the catches for him (montana) you've never seen him play.
The guy routinely put the ball where rice and other could catch and run. He led the receivers very well. Besides, Montana did win before Rice arrived, thank you very much. None of his other receivers made HOF.

To say that Montana made Rice, or Rice made Montana is just pure juvenile stuff. Both made each other.
If your favorite QB did not have that opportunity then so be it. He can be great without them (e.g Elway)

So was Terry Bradshaw, only he did it first.
Just sayin’.
----------------
As great as Bradshaw was no one will put him in the same class as Montana. The guy has no peers in excellence in the big game (ridiculous 127 rating in superbowls).
Pretty much any lists of greatest QBs usually starts with Montana and Unitas in the first or second position.
Even if Brady wins another one, does not catapult him ahead of these guys.

But why does anyone have to be the greatest. I don't think it's really clear cut in any position except WR (where Rice is the greatest).
I think Pats/non-Pats fans can be happy calling Brady as one of the greatest.

Brady has played on better TEAMS than Peyton. Bradshaw and Montana played on better TEAMS than Peyton.

However, when you factor in INDIVIDUAL play...no better has done it better than Peyton. he will retire as a top 3-5 best QB of all time. Brady, Rothlisberger, Brees, Rivers nor any of the current "elite" QB's in today's game come close to Peyton. Peyton is an ALL-time great. Not a current great. I’m giddy at the thought of this game.

Silliness. Brady gets his fourth ring come Sunday, and probably a fifth before he packs it in. The best the NFL has ever seen.

@rushmatic:
clearly NO pats fans are counting this game as a win...why can't you understand the concept that fans of both teams believe that their teams can win 1 more game?
