Patriots Media Day observations

We’re here at Lucas Oil Stadium for Super Bowl Media Day, and while my media colleagues wolf down their buffet spread I’ll offer up a few observations:

1. The fans loved it. Many of the journalists who view Media Day as a chore scoffed when the NFL announced that it would sell tickets. But the thousands of fans who turned out today sure seemed like they were enjoying themselves — cheering, laughing and generally having a great time. The NFL could easily sell many more tickets to Media Day if it wanted to, as evidenced by the fact that I saw someone scalping tickets outside Lucas Oil Stadium. The fans are here to stay.

2. Rob Gronkowski doesn’t seem concerned about his ankle. Gronkowski is out of his walking boot and seemed completely comfortable. He was joking around, laughing and generally acting like a guy who expects to be good to go on Super Bowl Sunday.

3. People still want to talk to Chad Ochocinco. As a bench warmer for the Patriots, Ochocinco wasn’t given one of the spots at a podium and was instead just milling around inside Lucas Oil Stadium. But he was still mobbed by reporters — at one point I saw exactly one reporter talking to Logan Mankins, who did have a podium, while about 30 reporters fought for a position around Ochocinco.

4. Bill Belichick remains in a good mood. We’ve talked all week about how Belichick seems calmer, more relaxed and just happier to be here than he has been at past Super Bowls. Belichick was asked plenty of questions about his coaching legacy, and he always answered that he was just honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as coaches like Chuck Noll and Vince Lombardi. He seems to be genuinely enjoying himself and grateful to be back at the Super Bowl.

5. Media Day remains more about the spectacle than the sport. Occasionally you can hear people talking about the game (and we’ll get into more of those quotes later today) but what you see more of is players getting interviewed by superheroes.

And I’m sure Lombardi and Noll would be “honored” to be mentioned in the same sentence with a convicted cheater like BB.

    errr…. maybe not

  2. Belichick does seem more relaxed. As a Patriots fan, I want him to be his uptight and arrogant self. Why mess with the formula? He’s turning 60 this year and maybe the Ghost of NFL Future has paid him a visit. I can see him coaching until Brady retires and then shifting to GM and handing the keys over to McDaniels.

  3. “what you see more of is players getting interviewed by superheroes.”

Really ? Superheroes ? Who’s there ? Batman ? The Avengers ? Kung Fu Panda and the Furious Five ? Didn’t know they were NFL fans too ROFL

  4. rexismybff should go play in traffic…what time do the jets play in the superbowl this year? oh, right, they don’t and never will so suck it db!

  5. Just checked the NFL record books. There is no * near any Patriot records or Superbowl Victories! There won’t be one next to this Superbowl Victory either. It’s great when people hate, then you know you are at the top of the mountain!

  6. Once again people (for what that’s worth) such as rexismybff and 30octaveFart are showing their true intelligence level – which by the way seems to be less than 20 – blogging like imbeciles on a pats story. We know who rex’s team is but 30octave is too much of a coward to say who he/she/it really roots for.

  7. Once again 3activefarts:
You are showing your ignorance. So tell me, why bother even watching? Or if you are so sure “the fix is in” how much do you have on the game. Grow up.

  8. dyims, they are both right. Since when do you have to be a Pats fan to comment on a Pats story? BBs legacy is that of a cheater.

Great week to be a Jets fan.

Your coach will soon be mentioned with his father and the hundreds of others who failed to lead a team to the Super Bowl. Of course he IS the all time leader in guarantees.

  10. If the fix is in and it favors the Pats, pencil me in for liking that. I will happily take that. Will it wash away the sting from 2007? Nope…but it will be really, really nice.

  11. Sure Little Bill is in a good mood. He knows he is going to CHEAT AGAIN for another tainted win *************** Once a cheat always a cheat – sorry choward heads that you feel bad about this but don’t blame us; we didn’t cheat, Little Bill did………….and got caught – lost a first round draft pick and was fined so why mad at us? I mean you don’t want to see Floyd Landis back riding do you? how about Tim Donaghy? you want him back as a referee? Can we let Rosie Ruiz back in the marathon? How about you sitting next to a card counter at the black jack table – you want him to continue to cheat you out of your money? well we don’t want Little Bill the Cheater in the NFL either so sue us you fools. Forever enjoy your ************* tainted wins.

You don’t have to be a Pats fan to comment on Pats threads. However there’s a special name for people who post on almost all Pats (or other teams’) threads with the same tiresome junk over and over and don’t even post on their own teams’ threads much. Just shows us, among other things, that they have nothing to bring to the table as far as football related knowledge. So if the shoe fits….

  15. “Try looking at the attached picture, Pats fan moron.”

LOL I may be a moron but at least I don’t have to ask Mommy if I can use her computer to make my posts about mean ol’ Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

And if my team had already been eliminated I wouldn’t be pathetically spending all my time making those posts. Maybe someday a girl will finally talk to you and you can find something else to do with your time.

  16. Three shiney clean untainted Lombardi’s. I know because I’ve seen them.

What are you going to do about it? Haha. Cry? Thought so. And cry some more.

The fix is in? WooooHoooo! Number four!

All you hater, are you nervous? Going to cry some more on Monday?

Wow, the haters are getting more and more nervous as game time approaches.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Ya… because Chuck Noll’s 4 SB’s weren’t won by teams on more anabolic steroids than the East German Olympic Team… I can see why he would be embarrassed to be associated with BB.

  18. Bozo and Rex,

You’re both pathetic and sad little men. I feel terrible for both of you.

Here we are in Boston getting to enjoy article after article basking in the glow of 8 championships in 11 years (with the chance for a 9th), and there you are trolling an NFL message board crying out for some attention while spouting whiny nonsense. It’s embarrassing. Go away. It’s clear that no one wants you here.

  19. Didn’t the Pats go 17-1 after they stopped “cheating” in 2007? Come up with some new material to mask your jealousy. Just accept the fact that the Pats are the best team of the past 10 years.

  20. Belichick has an appreciation of history…he realizes not many men have done what he has.
Looks like he has taken a moment to appreciate that fact. Good for him!
