And what the heck are you talking about with Williams out-playing Fairley. Fairley only played in a couple games, but he had more impact plays than Williams did all year. Corey has 4 sacks in two years. If Suh is drawing doubles, we need somebody to take advantage and Fairley has shown that he can, just watch the 2 Saints games. I can’t think of any impact plays Williams made this year, other than jumping offsides. He needs to be released.

You’re right, defensive tackles are only based on their numbers. You realize Suh had a monster year last year because Corey Williams was the one getting double and triple teamed every year? Williams play has declined this year, but he is still solid at defensive tackle. You probably think Suh had an aqful year as well because he didn’t get double digit sacks again this year. Fairley was outplayed my Williams this year and thats a fact. Fairley was injured to much to outplay anybody this season. I do think you might be right with Williams being released though, as long as Sammie Hill is resigned. They have young depth at the position and could use his money more effectly resigning Avril and redoing Calvins contract. Hopefully he is willing to redo his deal and take less money. I think Vanden Bosh could be cut as well if he isn’t willing to take less money.

Watching the games when Fairley actually played, I was dumbfounded as to why Fairley and Suh weren’t on the field at the same time. Corey Williams is a bum who has 4 sacks in two years, get him outta here.

You clearly are just someone with no time invested in watching the defense making general statements based on draft position…

Delmas is a solid Safey, Chris Houston would be a fine #2 corner, Durant is a good OLB. Corey Williams outplayed Fairley all season, and Speivey has done a good job learning how to play safety. Tulloch had a marginal season, but has shown very good MLB talent in the past. And Lawrence Jackson is starting to show the talent that made him a first round pick.

A defense doesn’t go from worst to first ever. They’ll get more pieces next year, and be better for it. Gunther became drunk on the idea that with their front four they never had to blitz, but another reason for that is their coverage skills just aren’t there. They couldn’t leave Houston 1 on 1 with elite WRs, and on the other side, Eric Wright is not a good enough cover corner to lock down a #2… so WRs were open all day during blitz packages. Alphonzo Smith is too big of a risk taker, and Aaron Berry is very unpolished… not to mention 2 of these top four CBs on the roster were hurt in the second half of the final 5 games.

If Gunther gets upgrades on Def like we’re expecting, he has to make the blitz a bigger part of this defense. If he fails to do that, he should go.

But last year, I don’t blame him for being conservative…

I’ve compared them, Sapp improved a lot from his rookie year to his 2nd season, Suh took a massive step back.
I’d rather have the guy with a few less total stats for the 2 years but shows improvement.

As for his recent rip on Suh and the Lions, my guess is this will create a temporary flare up – but in due time, Sapp and Suh will be tight as brothers.

Same think went down with Sapp and Mike Strahan, and also with Sapp and Kris Jenkins.

Sapp’s comments were incendiary enough to incite exchanges of threats of violence involving the Stray and Jenk camps — and yet, when the dust settled — it was a love-in.

That’s how it’ll eventually play out here too. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
