The guy came INTO the league as one of the slowest linebackers. Can you imagine when he gets older and “loses” a step? Teams can already exploit him now in coverage, but imagine then. This is a passing league and his best asset is stopping the run.

Hey I have no problem with the kid. He was phenomenal at UF. I am an FSU fan and I hate UF and almost everyone who ever played there, but he was legit in school. I was shocked that he fell so far, regardless of 40 time.

Darth Bill really lucked out on that one!

Spikes has 0 forced fumbles, 0 fumble recoveries, 0 sacks, and 1 INT in 2 full seasons.

Other teams must be absolutely kicking themselves to let that much production slip through their fingers. Just more proof positive about what an evil genius Darth Bill really is.

The dude wouldn’t even make the practice squad for the Steelers or Jets. He’s not even a good enough linebacker to get run over by the running backs in Oklahoma drills in training camp for the Steelers.

paid off, in that he's a linebacker on the worst defense in NFL in 2011?
When the patriots beat the ravens in the AFC title game, that was the first team the pats beat anybody that finished with a winning record all year.
And they didn't even win that game, the ravens kicker did.
The G-Men already beat the pats in their own back yard.
They will do it again and it won't even be close.

He is a great run stuffer. But the reason he fell to the second round is not only because of his speed. Aside from taht amazing INT in the AFC Champ game he is often exposed in coverage. Go watch the Steelers Pats game this year, they picked on him the whole game.

I like the guy, but he is limited in what he can do. Great v the run, bad against the pass.

According to the book “War Room” Belichick gets a consensus from his assistants and personnel people but the final call his his.

One story has it that in 2006 many of his assistants did not want Laurence Maroney but preferred DeAngelo Williams instead (also could have had Maurice Jones-Drew) but Bill overruled them and took Maroney based on Josh McDaniels brothers recommendation (he was on the Minnesota staff).

So yeah, BB does kind of do it all.

Hey, just wanted to thank you for answering me w/o crucifying me. It was an honest question and I got an honest answer. Very rare on this site.

So, not only does he not produce, he's injury prone?

As I said, he wouldn't even make it as training camp fodder for linebacker-rich teams like the Jets or Steelers or Ravens.

I'm starting to get the feeling this Super Bowl will not be competitive at all - the Giants are going to run right through this weak defense.

The lack of "impact" plays by Spikes just indicates he's not a game changer...yet. He's missed time due to injuries, and he's still young. If you watch the Patriots more than when they beat your Jets, you'd know that the defense is better with Spikes on the field than when he's off it. He's a solid inside LB who is improving his game, and he's doing what Belichick asks of him. Of course, they were just unlucky that the Jets grabbed Ducasse right in front of them....I guess they had to take what they could get.

Rex is New England Patriot fans bff too. May he be the coach in New York for many many years.

PS-Spikes was a better draft pick than Sanchez - no teams are kicking themselves for letting Sanchez get away.

lol - yup, stats like that define his play. BTW - he has a sack, a fumble recovery, and an INT all in this post season, so not sure where your info comes from. He's a tremendous run-stopper - needs to work on his pass coverage skills a bit, but he's a hard hitter who energizes the defense and plays fearless football. Jets players will enjoy watching him play in the Superbowl from....wait for it....their couches! Take care now Rex!

Look, I think BB is an awesome coach, and that hurts to say that as a Bills fan. I really think he is a genious. HOWEVER, everyone is so quick to get on BB’s nut$ that they forget that maybe the scouting dept had anything to do with this? why is it every time something works out for them, it’s all him? I would think they would have another voice in there at some point? Or does he have all the power in the front office? I’ll be honest, I don’t know that much about the pat’s as i hate them. I just think it would be nice to say, “The scouting Dept. came up with a diamond in the rough with that one”, or something like that. Please don’t get me wrong, once again I think BB is a GREAT coach. Does he really do EVERYTHING?
---------------------------------------------------
According to the book "War Room" Belichick gets a consensus from his assistants and personnel people but the final call his his.
