Even without Megatron’s looming contract situation, the Lions are in cap hell. If they sign or franchise Avril, the cap situation will become more hellish without a ton of contract restucturing. He’s good, but not franchise player good. See Ray Edwards in Atlanta for a free agent bust that received a great contract after playing with very good fellow D-linemen on his prior team.

These guys don’t have 40 years career. They have an average of less than 10 years.

They’ve worked extremely hard to get where they are. Nothing wrong in trying hard to set themselves (and their family) up for good.

You are right, but you did not even go far enough. The average NFL career is like 3.5 years. Every player is one play away from potentially never being able to play at 100% again. They have every right to grab as much money as they can, whenever they can. If the NFL guaranteed contracts like every other major sport I would not be so adamant about players getting paid. But the NFL does not, so the players have to fend for themselves.

I don’t think the Lions should re-sign Avril.

They need to work on a fat contract extension for Calvin Johnson and use the money they would have spent on Avril on other free agents to plug some holes this team has.

The Lions are stacked at DT. This team has 4 capable starting DT’s. They can rotate Suh and Fairley to play DE along with Jackson and Young.

Brent Grimes, Cortland Finnegan, Brandon Carr, LaRon Landry, Michael Griffin, Demetrius Bell, Carl Nicks.. the list goes on..

I agree with everything you said accept the KVB thing. 2 years ago he was important for his value in the locker room, but his skills are deteriorating quickly. He gets the white athlete bonus, so people think he is better that he really is, just like peyton hillis, and just like jason seyhorn 10 years ago. You can disagree, but it doesn’t make it any less true.

They need to keep Tulloch and let Avril go if he wants too much. They have Lawrence Jackson and Willie Young to cover it. Avril we play worse with most other lines.

Cliff Avril is the most productive defensive linemen on the Lions but with that being said he shouldn’t be overpaid.

He reminds me of one of those guys that will quickly go from 11 sacks down to 5 sacks per season after signing a fat contract.

We Dont need him ,tulloch is more valuable .we have young who can step in there or we can draft a de in 1st or 2nd round , paying Avril big money will hurt the team in future because we will not be able to sign any free agents especially after inking big play cj to a long term deal which he deserves .

I’ve seen every snap of cliffs career in Detroit. I feel cliff is more of a beneficiary of the tackles needing extra attention. The guy gets flattened on counters sweeps and is way upfield on delays. He’s not top tier. Be careful here Martin Mayhew

He’s more valuable to the Lions than any other team really. Knock Suh but he’s the reason that Avril gets the sacks he does. It’s kind of like Stafford and Megatron. Staff looks great because Megatron looks great.

I dont know. the Lions have are going to have some of the big players contracts coming up quickly, so they will probably want to wrap this one up and not have to deal with it again next year if they have the choice.

Let’s get real, any defense end you put on that line is going to get 8+ sacks per year and as much as I like Avril and want to see him re-up with the Lions, Willie Young, a 7th rd pick from two years ago would be just as formidable and the money that would have been spent on Avril could be spent on a position of dire need such as CB or OT.

I really think the same Lions fans, the same Arm-chair QB’s who were screaming for Hill and Stanton to start when Stafford was slumping because of his injured hand in the middle of the season will be upset when Avril doesn’t get his long term contract and isnt with the team in 2013. Mind you these were the same people that were screaming to draft Curry over Stafford, a Franchise QB and the only reason the Lions are even good in the 09 draft.

Whatever the Lions do I trust cause Mayhew gets it.

Of course Avril doesn’t want to be franchised. The lions don’t want to pay him a huge contract either. Neither have a choice so they will just get to deal with it.

As a lions fan I want to see Avril resign, but it may not be possible with the salaries they have on the books. If it were me, I would resign him. Even if I had to cut Vanden Bosch.

As a lions fan i see this as the true test of where the team is headed and how bright or grim the future is, cliff and megatron need to get paid in the same year allong with other key guys, I know they draft well and did o.k in free agency but now its sallary cap time and decisions on who gets paid and who walks. stafford and kvb already restructured there contracts last season to make the cap work so im a little worried to say the least but like i said this is the true test.. we will see.

Hey Cliff, come on over to JAX & reunite with Joe Cullen. Your a missing link to one of the best, if not,what could be the best defense in the NFL.
BTW, we have a new owner who’s willing to OVERPAY for your services, a new HC, a top ranked Defense with Mel Tucker at the helm calling the shots. Every player that’s played for him will tell you how great it is to work under his coaching, (we retained most of the defensive staff & added maybe a couple coaches, but definite upgrades).
Did I mention our owner is willing to pay? By that, I also mean upgrades to the offense will definitely be addressed. You, Mr. Avril, will make our 7th pick of this years draft much less complicating, meaning we could possibly look elsewhere if we can retain the services of DE Jeremy Mincey, if not, I’m sure Coples will be there after having a strong showing in the Senior Bowl. In conclusion, I didn’t mention that you’d also be playing alongside TnT: DT’s Terrance “Pot Roast” Knighton & Tyson Alualu.
I assure you, if you come through Duval for a visit, you’ll leave with a smile having signed a lucrative contract.
