Colts make hires to fill out coaching staff

Jim Irsay, Ryan Grigson AP

Mike Florio broke the news a week ago that Chuck Pagano would be the Colts’ next head coach. FOXSports.com’s Alex Marvez has the scoop on several of Pagano’s assistants.

Marvez, citing a source, reports that the Colts have tabbed Marwan Maalouf as special teams coordinator, Roy Anderson as safeties coach, and Alfredo Roberts to coach tight ends. Marvez also reports that Pagano is retaining running backs coach David Walker from Jim Caldwell’s old staff.

Maalouf and Anderson worked with Pagano in Baltimore. Roberts comes over from Tampa Bay, where he coached up rookie Luke Stocker and veteran Kellen Winslow this past season.

    And who’s the DC?

So how many tight ends does a team normally carry on the roster? Three? You need a full time coach for three guys?

The Colts special teams have been a joke for years, despite having probably the best kicker in NFL history and a solid punter. Hopefully Maalouf can find players that will a) get the Colts the ball past the 14 yard line on kickoffs b) have a punt returner go more than 5 yards and c) prevent long returns when kicking/punting.

Hey guys, I was the first one in my company to do the B line in under 4 minutes. What’s that? You don’t care?

And neither do I care which reporter broke what story first.

Yes, who will be the defensive coordinator. And I’m not sure we need the same running backs coach – unless he is the only one who knows what happened to Delone Carter.

    Way to bury the lead.

One of the bigger stories last week was that the Keith Butler was first going to be the Colts DC and then that he wasn’t.

Now you post a story saying that the Colts had “filled out their coaching staff” and make no mention of the fact that there is no defensive coordinator listed AND the fact that there were other defensive hires probably indicating that Pagano may be leaning towards being his own DC.

I posted last week that it might be hard to get a big name DC to go there because it will always be percieved that Pagano is really leading the defense. Looks like maybe that’s the case.
