Ravens plan to extend Flacco’s contract, keep Ray Rice

Baltimore Ravens v Pittsburgh Steelers Getty Images

Speaking at a Wednesday press conference alongside G.M. Ozzie Newsome, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti adamantly confirmed that the team plans to keep quarterback Joe Flacco and free agent running back Ray Rice for the long term.

“Ray and Joe Flacco will be a part of this football team next year, period,” Bisciotti said.

Added Newsome, “We would like to have a deal done with Ray before before we have to put the (franchise) tag on him.”

The Ravens will be eligible to tag Rice beginning on February 20, but it sounds like they won’t do it immediately. The priority is to get Rice locked up long term.

Flacco’s future has been more of a question mark. The Ravens scaled back their offense in 2012, going more run-heavy down the stretch. Flacco has not yet led Baltimore to a Super Bowl, and he is entering a contract year.

“He’s trending up,” Bisciotti said of Flacco. “This is the sweet spot for him, years five through ten. … We’re just going to sit down and start grinding out contract terms. … I think he’s going to be extremely successful. I think he’s going to have rings.”

Bottom line, this season: Lee Evans catches one pass, and the Ravens are in the Super Bowl.

Bottom line, last season: Boldin catches a sure TD in the end zone and Ravens are in the AFC Championship.

Joe’s recievers have let him down at crucial times. The man has four seasons under his belt, and playoff wins in every season. Is he elite? Nope. But there are 20+ teams in this league who would gladly put him on their roster.

“Flacco’s future is more of a question mark…Flacco has not yet led Baltimore to a Super Bowl…”

How many Qbs have led their teams to a Super Bowl in their first 4 years in the league? Not that many. But he has led them to one division championship, the divisional round of the playoffs 4 times, and the AFC Championship game twice. He’s won more regular season games in 4 years than any other QB in NFL history. He’s the only QB in NFL history to go to the playoffs every year for the first 4 years of his career. He’s got more road playoff wins than any other QB in their first 4 seasons. And he has an awesome fu man chu. So please explain to me how Flacco’s future with the Ravens is more of a question mark?

  13. 3yardsndust says: Feb 1, 2012 6:33 PM

Great news for the Steelers as Flacco will never win a championship. He’s a first-rate choker, a hack, a bum. He’s warm tuna salad that’s been sitting out all afternoon in the sun.

  14. ravensfan4life52 says: Feb 1, 2012 6:36 PM

And please explain to me how with his resume he’s not elite? Compare Brady’s first four years as a stater to Flacco’s. They’re almost identical. Joe is elite. Joe will win rings. Joe has an awesome fu man chu. He’s more elite than any other QB his age. And I know most people on here will disagree with me and that’s cool, I’m just sayin that there is no other QB in the NFL that I want on my team.

Andy Dalton is going to make everyone forget about Joe Flacco and Big Ben. New era beginning in the “nati”. A. J. Green and “Brandon Floyd” (wouldn’t that be nice), along with a stud rookie rb, watch out, AFC North, it’s Bengal time.

    —————–

He was a rookie this year, and was 1-1 for 18 yards in regular season play. He was ACC Player of the Year and ACC Championship Game Most Valuable Player in 2010.

You can compare him to Troy Smith if you want, but the Ravens rarely draft flame-outs, and Tyrod is usually thought of as a Mike Vick Jr., thanks to a solid arm and 4.47 speed.

  18. chadinkc30 says: Feb 1, 2012 6:50 PM

Joe Flacco proved this year that he is not a super bowl qb! He’s way too immobile in pocket, and its easy to see!! If I was a Baltimore fan, I wouldn’t be happy about this! If RG3 is a Brown next year, Flacco IMO would be arguably worst QB in division! Great arm, not an above average QB

  19. restonraven says: Feb 1, 2012 6:50 PM

The Broncos have been looking for a franchise QB since Elway retired; the Browns since Kosar; the Bills since Jim Kelley; Dolphins since Marino; The Jets since Namath; the Redskins have been searching fruitlessly for nearly two decades; Ditto for the Chiefs. Is Alex Smith the QB the 49ers have been searching for since Steve Young? Finding and developing a franchise QB is a difficult proposition that can chew up a number of years. If it was so easy to just draft the next franchise QB all of the aforementioned franchises would have done so. The NFL draft is littered with major college QB prospects that were drafted very high and busted in less than four years (Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, Akili Smith et.al.) There is an equally long list of free agent busts. We have a good, solid, stable, durable (started every game since he was a rookie), high character young man who has helped his team reach the playoffs four straight years. Sorry — I remember Banks, Boeller, Wright, Grbac & Case. Give Joe an extension. He’s earned it. Sure he’s not Brady, Rodgers or Brees – but who is.
He beat the Steelers twice this year to get over that hump (great games in both wins) and came within a stripped pass of a perfectly thrown ball from taking the Ravens to the Super Bowl. If Evans hangs on to the ball — this is a different conversation. Eventually I think he is the guy to get us to the big game.

Huge money they probably give Ray Rice would go further if used to shore up other areas, namely receiver. Draft a young RB, like Doug Martin, sign a Bowe and a good pass rusher/ LB.

  25. dlmcc1010 says: Feb 1, 2012 7:29 PM

You could do alot worse than Joe Flacco. He is not an elite QB, but he is going to make some throws when he has to and he wont lose you the game. He also thinks hes elite which is good because it makes it tough for teams like Pittsburgh to rattle him.

I thought he earned his extension with that game against New England. they lost that game because their WR’s are crap and their kicker is a goat. Its a miracle finding guys like Rodgers, Brees and Brady in the draft. Alot of you are spoiled by their play. It doesnt make everyone else a bad QB. I dont think Flacco is bad

Joe flacco met his potential his rookie season since then i have not really seen a progression that makes me think he can win a championship. when you look at the ravens and the steelers there the same team. why does one team have a championships and one doesnt? one thing, one has a qb and one doesnt if u switch big ben and flacco the ravens have the championships and the steelers dont. flacco may have won alot of games but look at the team he has. this team should have made the super bowl by now and hasnt and i think its because flacco is not a big time qb. if u cant win the big one with him time to move on and find someone else that can.

  29. tsutton84 says: Feb 1, 2012 7:48 PM

The Ravens going to the playoffs DOES NOT make Flacco elite. He was 18th in passer rating, and 26th in completion pct, in his 4th season. Top Ten doesn’t make you elite… 18th – nope. I don’t care how many playoffs he’s gone to, the offense has been ranked 28th, 18th, 20th and 19th his four seasons as starters. The Ravens have made the playoffs IN SPITE OF Flacco, not because of him. Don’t believe me? Wait ten more years with him as QB, and you’ll still be waiting for Ring #1.

  30. dapresident says: Feb 1, 2012 7:53 PM

    ——————————-

Are you on drugs? Flacco is not nearly as bad as some people act like. He’s probably a slightly above average QB, it says something that he’s taken them somewhat deep into the playoffs every season but he’s yet to take that next step as a QB. When I watch him, I just get the feeling that he’s along for the ride, and rarely do I see him step up and win the game on his own. That isn’t their gameplan but he needs to become more than a game manager if they want to take the next step.

  37. ravensfan4life52 says: Feb 1, 2012 8:51 PM

    @cannonballdookie

Does he put the team on his back every week in and out to win games? No. He doesn’t have to. He’s got an awesome D and a great RB, but he is capable of putting the team on his back and leading his team to victory. Some games he has tried and failed, but everyone fails sometimes. And if he’s just along for the ride then why didn’t we just stick with Boller or Troy Smith? And look at the WRs he’s had for his career. Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton. Derrick Mason, Quan, and Housh. This was the first season he actually had an above average group of WR and one of them was a rookie WR that didn’t have an offseason and one of them was injured for the majority of the season. I can’t wait to see Joe next year after he’s had a full offseason with his WRs. It’s gonna be awesome. If it wasn’t for Lee’s drop the Ravens would be in the Super Bowl, if it wasn’t for Quan and Housh dropping passes last year the Ravens would’ve gone to the AFC Championship and had a good shot at going to the Super Bowl then. If not for WRs dropping great passes the Ravens would’ve been to 3 AFC Championship games and at least 1 Super Bowl, possibly 2, in Flacco’s first 4 seasons in the NFL. I’m sorry but winning is what matters and Joe Flacco has won more in his first 4 seasons than any other QB in history. If that isn’t elite then idk what is.

Flacco isn’t too bad a QB. In fact, i’d say that he’s not “bad” at all; he’s a very good QB in as much as you know what to expect from him most of the time.

He’s a long way from “eloite” but until he has real help at WR it’ll be impossible to gauge his real ability.

And this is coming from a Steelers fan.

PS- Go ahead and believe that sweeping us one time means you guys are “over the hump” and that “those days are over”. Go ahead. Believe that. I dare ya.

What? Phil Rivers has not yet led San Diego to a Super Bowl. Maybe the Chargers should just cut him loose. Yeah, not getting to a Super Bowl is a sure sign of mediocrity at the QB position. After all, getting to and winning Super Bowls is a piece of cake for an “elite” QB. Just ask Marino.

I swear … football fans get nuttier every day.

  42. waccoforngata says: Feb 1, 2012 9:28 PM

People always talk about team wins with Flacco. His qb rating for the season was only 2 points better than Sanchez. 57% completion. And 6.66 yards per attempt. Maybe Joe is the antichrist? But.. He did have a whole team of new guys to throw to and was just his second year to throw to Boldin. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for next year just in case

  51. cannonballdookie says: Feb 2, 2012 1:43 AM

    @ ravensfan4life52:

So is Mark Sanchez also an elite quarterback by your standards? He’s had a lot of success when making starts for the Jets in his career and has also engineered some comebacks and played well in the playoffs. However, I’d like to venture a wild guess and say that anyone who thinks Sanchez is elite needs to be locked away in a padded room.

The word “elite” is thrown around way too often. It’s meant for the guys who are best at their craft, those who can win games on their own whether or not they need to, and put up numbers in the regular season and playoffs. Rodgers, Brees, Brady, and Eli fit the bill, with Roethlisberger close and big brother Peyton is an unknown.

Flacco didn’t complete 60% of his passes this season with a pretty solid group of WR’s. Even though Smith was a rookie, he still gave them a big play dimension and Boldin and Rice are as reliable as it gets as possession targets. Like I said, he’s been good enough for them to have success, and he did win a few games on his own when they needed him to, but he is nowhere near the type of QB guys like Rodgers, Brady, and Brees are. He just doesn’t have total control of the offense yet.

You can list stats forever but the only one that matters is how many championships he has won…oh that’s right he hasn’t one a Superbowl yet and likely never will.

    Roethlisberger 2
    Flacco 0

It is utterly irrelevant what his stats have been his first four seasons. Is he the worst QB in the league ? No, is he elite? No . He is average at best and has ridden the back of one of the best defences for his four seasons.

Flacco will not win any rings and that’s that!!!

  55. biglebronski says: Feb 2, 2012 7:45 AM

The media was clamoring after B-more’s loss to the Patriots that Flacco had “proved something” and “taken that next step.” But I just don’t see it that way.

Flacco had some really nice throws in that game, and essentially led the team on a game-winning drive. But he was very inconsistent over the course of the game, like always.

The guy holds onto the ball too long, misses open receivers, and puts his team into tough spots. Then he’s “taking that next step” when he almost saves his team from a situation that he put them in in the first place.

  56. vasteelerfan says: Feb 2, 2012 8:12 AM

    @cannonballdookie

Has Sanchez won as many games as Flacco? No. Has he been to the playoffs as many times as Flacco? No. Has we won as many playoff games as Flacco? No. Has Sanchez had a better group of WRs throughout his career? Yes. Has he had a better O-Line? Yes. Has he had a better D? Besides this year the two D’s have been about equal. Sanchez has already thrown more INTs than Flacco and Flacco has been in the league a year longer. Sanchez and Flacco are completely different. When the Jets have lost in the playoffs its been because Sanchez has choked and lost the game for them. Flacco’s rookie year he choked, but he was a rookie. Every year since then when we’ve lost in the playoffs it’s because the whole team choked (2009 in Indy), or because of WRs dropped great passes (the past two years). The Jets lose because of Sanchez. The Ravens lose because the whole team plays awful or because WRs drop passes.

    ____________________________

Exactly, also do these people think that San Diego is happy they let Drew Brees go after a few average years? (Don’t give me the shoulder injury they got Rivers and flirted with Manning aka made their move to get rid of Drew before the injury)

Wonder why Denver kept Elway around? Wonder why Buffalo kept putting that bum Jim Kelly out there? Arizona and St. Louis should have given up on Kurt Warner, that guy was a bum too! Not every great QB wins a Superbowl in their first 4 years, actually only 3 that I can thnk of off the top of my head have done it.

This is what you want from a QB

A guy you WILL make the playoffs
A guy you EXPECT to be competitive and win games in the playoffs
A guy you HOPE can win a championship

You can never EXPECT a championship there are to many other variables such as matchups, timing, injury, or just the team on the other side of the ball playing a great game.

Ask Jim Kelly if he is elite. Hall of fame QB, played on GREAT football teams, and never won a ring. Remember he was the losing QB in the biggest upset in superbowl history. (Belichecks defensive game plan from that game is in the hall of fame).

You should get help on your Flacco fixation.

I can take almost every game and look at plays that any player could have made differently. And it is a team game. My point was and still is, no one is selling Flacco as a top 5 QB. Not anyone who knows anything anyway. And I don’t put him nearly as good as your boy Ben. But even Ben misses a read, or underthrows a ball here and there? They all do. And I find it convenient you only point out Flacco’s misses (which is why i pointed to future HOFr Brady’s misses in the same game).

Dude, I guess you’re just railing on Flacco to be a lemming. I can respect a Steeler’s fan like Deb because she knows the game and respects the other teams without betraying her own. And she knows I am fair on the Steelers (almost all of the time – I know I am can be a jerk sometimes).

It takes a certain amount of maturity to respect other teams and players and still hate on them at the same time. Do I hate Ben, or Hines? Not personally but because they are on my team’s rival…off course I do. But I guaranty you I respect them. I get you hate the Ravens and their players. But you will never be a true fan until you can give credit and praise where it is due and when you dole out criticism fairly to all that deserve it.

    @ Bunk

Don’t you realize that he is right… I mean if Flacco isn’t 45-45 for 589 yards 6 TD’s and 0 INT’s in every game of his career then he is a bum.

He is the only starting QB in the NFL to ever miss an open target. Brady, Rogers, Brees… they never throw incomplete passes and they certainly have never thrown an INT. Not those guys.

  67. bunkmcnulty says: Feb 3, 2012 2:20 PM

    @noquick

You’re wrong. At 45-45 he’s throwing the ball too much!

    Thanks for my back!

  68. ampatsisahypocrite says: Feb 3, 2012 7:16 PM

You characters just don’t get it, do you… I have the right to talk all I want about Flacco because I am the one PROVEN right!

I’ve told you guys for years, you will NEVER get to the Super Bowl with Flacco as your QB. And guess what — I’m right! Not only that, but I took a lot of static from all you Ravens fans who were so sure you’d just roll over New England. I took the crap, now I get to use it as fertilizer.

Bottom line: I’m right, you’re not. That means I can talk about Flacco all I want. Because unlike Flacco and the right to go to the Super Bowl — I’ve earned it.

Once again, the Ravens will NEVER get to the Super Bowl with Flacco.

    @ampatsisahypocrite

You haven’t been proven right idiot. Now if you said that the Ravens haven’t made it to the Super Bowl with Flacco so far then yeah you would’ve been proven right. If you would’ve said the Ravens won’t make it to the Super Bowl this year then yes you would’ve been proven right. But in saying the Ravens won’t make it to the Super Bowl with Flacco you won’t be proven right until Flacco retires or goes to another team without having won a Super Bowl. Then you will have been proven right, but until that time you are just another jerk with an opinion no one cares about just like the rest of us.

  70. bunkmcnulty says: Feb 4, 2012 7:06 PM

    @ampats

The only thing you have is…..hell, you don’t have the right because you never act like you have the least bit of intelligence, whether in general or about football. You’re just a homer with no real basis in understanding the game.

Very few Ravens fans who understand the game make dumb a$$ prdictions, whether about one game (like NE 2 weeks ago) or about going to SB. Making either is just stupid.

Until you can provide unbiased thoughts little boy, stay on Madden where you belong. You’re a sad little fella.

  71. ampatsisahypocrite says: Feb 4, 2012 10:16 PM

Excuse me, but which of these statements is true?

    a. The Baltimore Ravens have made it to the Super Bowl with Joe Flacco as their QB.

    b. The Baltimore Ravens have not made it to the Super Bowl with Joe Flacco as their QB.

Yeah, keep on trying to change reality, boys. Keep on trying to change reality.

  72. ravensfan4life52 says: Feb 5, 2012 12:08 AM

Yeah that doesn’t mean…You know what forget it. You aren’t smart enough to understand. I’m not wasting my time with this.

  73. noquickreactionshere says: Feb 6, 2012 11:16 AM

    @ ampatsisahypocrite

You changed your statement in your last post to make it true. There are 3 differant statements below.

    Ravens HAVE NOT been
    Ravens WILL NOT go
    Ravens CAN’T win

First is true, cannot argue that, it is fact
Second is debatable, It’s not easy to win it all and some of the greats never have. Considering that some of the greats have not I would say it’s possible that a guy who is “really good” or “above average” won’t.
Third is up for debate too but I would say the most logical answer is that it’s wrong. The final drive of the AFC title game proved to me that they CAN win with Joe…. that does not mean they will but there is hope and he does have the ability. He put the team in position to win and put the ball where it needed to be.

Your earlier statement which I think is wrong is that the Ravens CAN’T win with Joe. The AFC championship proved to me that they can, still to be determined if they will.

  74. ampatsisahypocrite says: Feb 7, 2012 1:04 PM

I changed NOTHING — the statement has always been that the Ravens will never go to the Super Bowl with Joe Flacco at QB. Now, go ahead and show me how I’m wrong. Go ahead and prove it.

    I dare ya.

  75. ravensfan4life52 says: Feb 7, 2012 1:41 PM

You can’t prove that statement true or false at this point in time. It is true that Joe Flacco has not yet led the Ravens to a Super Bowl, but unless you have a time machine or can see into the future there is no possible way to say with absolute certainty that he will never take the Ravens to the Super Bowl. You sir are an idiot and have a severe lack of intelligence if you don’t understand that.

  76. ampatsisahypocrite says: Feb 8, 2012 1:28 PM

Can’t “prove” anything true or false?

True or false? The Ravens have never been to a Super Bowl with Joe Flacco as their QB.

Sorry, I’m not the “idiot” here… I’m afraid that award goes to YOU.

  77. ravensfan4life52 says: Feb 8, 2012 5:15 PM

There’s a difference between hasn’t and won’t. If you can’t figure that out then I’m sorry.

  78. noquickreactionshere says: Feb 9, 2012 12:08 PM

Either this guy is just effing with everyone or he is one of the dumbest people alive. At this point I’m guessing he is messing with us considering nobody could be that dumb to not understand the difference between Hasn’t, Won’t, and Can’t. Either way in my lifetime I have seen 1 Ravens Superbowl and 2 Steelers Superbowls. Over the next 5-8 years I expect to see Flacco and Harbaugh change that and the arguement won’t take place any more.

Can’t wait to see the news the day Joe inks that 7 year 94 million dollar deal, great day for Joe and a great day for the Ravens!

By the end of the offseason they should have Joe, Rice, and Webb locked up long term with Jimmy, Ngata, Suggs, Pollard, Pitta (I Pitta the fool), Torry, Yanda, Leach, Oher staying on the right side, I feel pretty good about the future. Might be the best secondary in the NFL next year.

  79. ravensfan4life52 says: Feb 10, 2012 4:33 PM

I hope he’s just messing with us lol.

  80. noquickreactionshere says: Feb 11, 2012 10:29 AM

    @ Ravensfan

No doubt that he has doubts about Flacco, I don’t think Flacco will ever be top 5 but he can certainly get the job done with the right team around him. I don’t think Eli is ever going to be top 5 either but he is still (to use Flacco’s term) pretty damn good.

Still remains true that after the top 3 or 4 the rest are interchangeable. If your number 11 your not that far off from number 6 and the other way around. There may been 8-12 quarterbacks above Flacco on a ranking this year but the line between them is very thin.

Can’t wait till next year, love that football goes all year round!
