Toomer: Shockey’s absence helped Eli

J. Shockey E. Manning AP

Eli Manning is gunning for his second Super Bowl title on Sunday. According to his former teammate Amani Toomer, Manning might not have won his first title if Jeremy Shockey was healthy in the 2007 season.

Appearing on NBC SportsTalk Wednesday with Florio, Toomer said Shockey “tried to take advantage” of Eli by pressuring him for the ball.  Toomer said there was “no question” Eli improved his play after he didn’t have the distraction of Shockey in the huddle.

Shockey didn’t exactly have the greatest reputation as a reliable player in New Orleans either. Perhaps the Panthers should consider that before possibly bringing him back for another season with Cam Newton in Carolina.

Toomer is a true Giant. If Tiki or Shockey played in the 07 Run there chances would have been much more slim.

    This Clown: 2 rings

    Brutal.

Go skinny dip with Tiki, and play tummy sticks loser..

Not to mention Tiki was probably asking for too many carries.

I whole-heartedly agree with Toomer’s assessment. Eli BLOSSOMED after Shockey was out of the picture and I have no doubt that Shockey brow-beat Eli or otherwise tried to intimidate/manipulate him. It was obvious how Eli played markedly better once Shockey was gone. Shockey has always struck me as someone having been raised in a trailer park.

  6. catman72 says: Feb 1, 2012 8:17 PM

So Eli couldn’t stand up to the pressure of his TE wanting the ball?

Sounds like a franchise QB to me…

  7. eliteman10 says: Feb 1, 2012 8:18 PM

I believe this comment to be true. Eli probably would never get into it so I believe another guy that was right there in every huddle. What a shame to cause Shockey was an animal that I loved to watch play.

    Is Tiki Barber flabbergasted ?

  10. 20bust11 says: Feb 1, 2012 8:22 PM

Shockey may have 2 rings, but his only contribution to either of them was a 1 yd. TD pass from Brees, that was a gift, because coach Payton liked him. P. Thomas could’ve easily run the ball in, but was up for a new contract, so politics played a part in that nonsense. Shockey was never a team player and, unfortunately for Carolina, never will be. He can’t block, or won’t, and looks like a Wooden Indian when he does catch the ball. He misses a lot more passes than he catches, so he won’t help Newton’s stats. I’m surprised he’s still in the NFL.

  11. jackdiesel says: Feb 1, 2012 8:24 PM

Maybe Eli shouldn’t be such a wimp. Shockey’s presence didn’t keep Brees from winning a Super Bowl in 09.

So basically all those rumors we used to hear about Eli being soft and not being a real leader are true. Way to give competing fans ammunition, Amani.

And that comment about Toomer being a “true Giant”? Yeah, true Giants definitely call out current Giants as needing to be pampered in order to succeed.

Shockey didn’t seem to hurt New Orleans’ Superbowl championship season.

But he is well past his prime and can no longer stay healthy.

He never played a full 16 game season since he’s joined the NFL.

  21. nfl1818 says: Feb 1, 2012 8:57 PM

it’s obvious that giants are better without tiki and without shockey – common problem – keep in mind Brady won 3 SBs with no-names bc there was never any issue with who was getting the ball – it was always the open guy – as great as Moss was for a brief period, his presence changed the offense – note that the Pats have dumped Moss, Meriweather, Thomas, and Haynesworth – and have barely missed a beat

well I follow the Panthers pretty close and I do see a few of the players a few times a year and I can personally tell all you know it all’s that the Carolina locker room loves Shockey and they don’t want him going anywhere.

ps: what kind of dude gets picked by a team but doesn’t go there because they’re not good enough for him? Eli is a punk and a cowherd. Have fun inhaling smog for the rest of your life city slicker.

  26. goodguyjohn says: Feb 1, 2012 9:13 PM

How can you not love Eli Manning. He got his ass kicked all over the field here in Frisco getting sacked 6 times and knocked down 20 times but kept coming and kept firing the ball. I think he deserves to be a two time Super Bowl Champ.

  27. dlmcc1010 says: Feb 1, 2012 9:20 PM

A young QB having to play with Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey is absolutely a recipe for failure. The Giants locker room in 2006 was a mess because those two guys were allowed to act up. Its not a coincidence that they won when these two guys weren’t on the field in 2007.

Teams with me first divas who are allowed to run wild never win in this league. Take a look at the last few teams that won the Super Bowl. None of them had any headache players. Shockey was quiet in New Orleans because Brees wasnt going to put up with any of his BS. Theres a reason why the Patriots dumped Randy Moss the second he started with his antics. Some teams dont seem to get it but its always the same story. Character is important in the NFL.

  28. cliverush says: Feb 1, 2012 9:22 PM

All anyone has to do is look at the tapes of the early season games and one will see right away the antics of this jerk. Amani always has had my respect.

man this just really bothers me… Eli is such a little girl. Is Jeremy Shockey the only offensive player to ever pressure him to throw the ball his way? What wide receiver or pass catching tight end doesn’t ask for the ball?

I wish the best of luck for Hakeem Nicks as a Carolina boy, but my God I just don’t think I can pull for Eli Manning.

  31. hnrqoliv says: Feb 1, 2012 9:23 PM

  39. situsavaisprier says: Feb 1, 2012 10:12 PM

Shockey was like this his entire career. While he was a pretty good player, he also did plenty of complaining. Even when Kerry Collins was there he was like that. He got worse when Coughlin came.

All in all it was all about “you have to get the ball to Shockey early to get him in the flow of the game”. I was tired of that bs. Burress also called for the ball a lot, but he wasn’t in Shockey’s league in that regard.

Shockey also complained about blocking, and never wanting or liking to do it ever. When Coughlin made him block more he did it, but didn’t like it. He would much rather run routes and catch plenty of passes.

When Shockey was out Eli didn’t have to worry about Shockey constantly worrying about getting him involved in each game. I addition this expanded the role of the Giants 3rd WR, which was more of an after thought when Shockey was there, with exception to Warner’s games and several from Eli.

Toomer is absolutely right. While his helped Eli plenty, but it wasn’t 100% the reason Eli improved his play and decision making.

The thing about Shockey, is, he was always open! At least you he thought so and I got so sick and tired of watching him throw his hands in the air and pout if the ball wasn’t thrown his way. Quite honestly Plaxico did that a lot too.

You got a a watered down version of Shockey when the Gmen traded him. Plus the Saints were already considered Brees’ team. When Eli was drafted the Giants had a few larger than life players on the team and it was a lot harder to take control. Also I gained a lot of respect for Brees was Shockey did act up and Drew got right in his face basically saying “you aint pullin that crap down here”

  44. buzzbissinger says: Feb 1, 2012 10:43 PM

  45. ijr213 says: Feb 1, 2012 10:51 PM

Why would the Panthers bring back Shockey anyway? They have a younger, better TE in Greg Olson on their squad. No need to overpay an older player when you have a younger, better version.

Perhaps the Panthers should consider that before possibly bringing him back for another season with Cam Newton in Carolina.

Imagine if he had the real Steve Smith and Shockey on the same team in the same huddle. Oh wait, he does. Maybe Cam is the man and Eli is a little boy.

    Cruz 82recs 1,536yds 18.7 avg 9TDs
    Nicks 76recs 1,192yds 15.7avg 7TDs

Cruz only started 7 games. Nicks played 15. Not too shabby for “no name” WRs. Interesting that NY had the fifth ranked passing offense in the entire league with a “pipsqueak” QB and “no name” WRs. Your football ignorance is staggering.

  50. pongonfl says: Feb 2, 2012 2:11 AM

The Giants have done very well. The offence plays very well for Eli. He seems comfortable leading it.
Its nothing against him that he doesn’t want to bitch fight with primadonas. Their attitude is probably foreign to him.
Give him men, he leads them, get the rest of that selfish garbage off the team.
Its a credit to him, the coach and the other players. And it has been constant since those two clowns left.

  51. giantsmania80 says: Feb 2, 2012 2:15 AM

    @pilot
Get real. John Elway did the same thing as Eli. His legacy was made by what he did on the nfl field. And reality check should tell you if Eli and the Giants win the super bowl his legacy will be looking pretty good as a player. One other thing is that eli couldnt demand the respect he can now because at that point he hadnt won anything yet. Look at sanchez and holmes. Sanchez took team to two afc championship games but because didn’t win big one no respect.

  52. rjkilla says: Feb 2, 2012 2:22 AM

what?…so you’re telling me that a TE wanting the ball would have made eli poop his pampers and lose the super bowl?

i’m not quite understanding this story…being a panthers fan i’ve loved everything shock has brought to the club…his toughness, dedication to the team, and intensity is contagious. furthermore cam and the rest of the offense has done nothing but rave about the guy and lobby for a new contract.

toomer is trying to diss shock for whatever reason but ends up making eli sound like a push over who can’t control his own huddle. maybe the giants should issue a gag order on all their retired players from now on to keep them from spouting nonsense.

  53. Matt Volk says: Feb 2, 2012 3:24 AM

BS! I know one year can be completely different attitude wise for a guy like that, but Shockey was the 2nd best signing we had this offseason. He helped Cam so much! I hated the guy when he played for the Giants gained a lot of respect for him when we had to play him twice a year, and now I love him. Dude gives 110% on every play and that was for a 6-10 team!

I can definitely see what Toomer is stating . If you have a guy with a pretty big name in the game that is pressuring you for the ball all the time, that takes away from the natural flow of the offense. It also is distracting for QB.

Look at Terrell Owens. He bothered San Fran QB. He bothered Philly QB. He bothered Dallas QB.

Look at Chad Johnson barking at Carson Palmer.

Especially when a guy is fairly young and still proving himself. That QB won’t tell the receiver to shut up or go sit down.

I only wish TO played with Kordell………….

    But I get Toomer, really.

  60. pantherlouie says: Feb 2, 2012 8:59 AM

Jeremy Shockey was a great team player and veteran presence for the Panthers this year. Everyone on the team seemed to love the attitude he brought and how he played. He was Cam’s go to TE this year, not Olsen. I don’t know what problems he might have had when he was with the Giants, but it sounds like he just wanted the ball, just like every other WR/TE does. I hope the Panthers resign him for another year!
