Cam Newton is making the rounds on radio row here in Indianapolis. It should be a victory lap for Newton after one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time.

Instead, Newton mostly focused on what he could do better.

“I did a poor job protecting the football,” Newton said on NFL Network, adding that he thought his rookie season was just okay. “As a whole, I’m satisfied with some things.”

Newton said his goal is to be the greatest quarterback of all time. He did admit that he set some goals for his rookie season that he was able to achieve. He said he went through the NFL record book before the year with his assistant and saw that Peyton Manning held nearly every rookie quarterback record.

“I’m not going to let him get the best of me. I wanted something to hang my hat on,” Newton said.

Now Newton holds nearly every rookie quarterback record, including for passing yards. He also holds the NFL record for rushing touchdowns. That’s not something Manning will ever hang his hat on.
