Cam Newton wins AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award

The Associated Press announced Saturday evening that Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is the 2011 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Newton won in a landslide, receiving 47 of the AP’s 50 votes. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton got the other three.

Newton was an easy pick after setting an NFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in 2011. He scored 14 times on the ground, and also became the first player in league history to both pass for 4,000 yards and rush for 500.

As for Dalton, a solid case could have been made that teammate A.J. Green was more deserving of Rookie of the Year votes.

I guess Vince Young, Matt Ryan, and Sam Bradford didn’t win the award?

  2. beastson says: Feb 4, 2012 6:46 PM

Well deserved. Broke all kinds of rookie records at his position. Best rookie in the game since Randy Moss.

What a Surprise….. Skins need a dude like this.

I don’t like Kammy Kam Kam, but he deserved ORY. The guy had a great season. I still think his career numbers are going to be lower than most expect. After about 3-4 years the odds are that the hits will catch up wtih him.

Hahaha! I love being right. And how many people said “he should be a full back or a tight end”! I’m gonna enjoy this victory, congrats Cam

First since big ben? What about sam bradford, matt ryan and vince young?

“Newton is the first quarterback to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004.”

My skills include “searching on wikipedia”, you hiring?

For the first nine months I read hundreds of comments in this section about how Newton would be a bust.

    Guess those people were wrong.

  11. thefiesty1 says: Feb 4, 2012 7:04 PM

Congrats. Good choice, but Dalton would have won if he was anywhere but Cincy.

  12. mempusa says: Feb 4, 2012 7:05 PM

Well deserved. Called it before he was drafted. Eat it naysayers

    From a Washnington Post story:

No quarterback had won the award until Ben Roethlisberger in 2004. Since, Vince Young, Matt Ryan, Bradford and Newton have been chosen.

You are correct, sir. Take your pick of prizes from the top row.

  14. eaglesnoles05 says: Feb 4, 2012 7:15 PM

Why, what’d he do? Lol, congrats Cam. Just as deserved and Stafford’s Comeback POY away.

@thefeisty – “Dalton would have won if he was anywhere but Cincy.”

–> Or if he were a total freak of nature who set rookie passing records and rushing records.

  16. samoanjungle says: Feb 4, 2012 7:24 PM

Amazing rookie season. I saw him live in the preseason game in Cincy and he looked lost and frustrated. I thought he could be a bust at that point. He turned it on as soon as the real bullets started flying.
    Well deserved.

only shocker to this story is the 3 voters that didn’t vote for cam…

Anyone who thinks it shouldn’t be cam doesn’t know football and needs to gtfo

  20. weskcfan says: Feb 4, 2012 8:20 PM

This was a no-brainer. Hands down the best rookie in this year’s class, and at a premium position.

  21. ufourya says: Feb 4, 2012 8:30 PM

That sweater against a red background deserves an offensive award all it own.

  22. nomadpat says: Feb 4, 2012 8:47 PM

Deserved. But I gotta question his color choice in the photo.

  23. latenightroach says: Feb 4, 2012 8:51 PM

Great job for a rookie QB.

    Except at the Pro Bowl.

  24. fittytuckin says: Feb 4, 2012 8:53 PM

Before you simpletons start slurping Andy Dalton, know he went 1-6 against teams .500 or better.

  25. farvefromover says: Feb 4, 2012 10:22 PM

Hey fittytuckin, what division does Cam Netwon play in again??? Sorry, I didn’t realize they got there teams into the playoffs like the AFC North did.

  26. onebucfan says: Feb 4, 2012 10:22 PM

One year wonder that other teams will figure out next season….then will see how many jump off the bandwagon!!

  27. farvefromover says: Feb 4, 2012 10:22 PM

    Sorry THREE teams

  28. panther17 says: Feb 4, 2012 10:42 PM

Must be nice playing sorry NFC W (49ers legit) and Manningless AFC South. Makes any division think they are the best in the league.

  29. gavriloprincip33 says: Feb 4, 2012 10:46 PM

    Wuuuuuuut? No Tebow?

  30. osage44 says: Feb 4, 2012 11:09 PM

what kin d of pinhead does it take to denigrate Andy Dalton in a story about the OROY?

  31. hrdcorbengalsfan says: Feb 4, 2012 11:35 PM

Dalton is just as good…he’s just a Bengal however.

  32. johnnyb1976 says: Feb 4, 2012 11:39 PM

Playoffs > ROTY. As a bengals fan let Cam win ROTY. I’ll take the playoffs ( Even though one and done ) with what rookies we had. Cincy will be a power in 2013 while Cam is still crying about the defense that the panthers still don’t have.

  33. eezyxyz says: Feb 5, 2012 1:32 AM

“Before you simpletons start slurping Andy Dalton, know he went 1-6 against teams .500 or better.”

    Cam went 1-7.

The combination of stats and wins put up by Dalton is hard to find in a rookie QB. Other rookie QBs have put up bigger numbers (eg. Newton, Peyton Manning), but usually because their teams were bad and they “had” to put up big numbers. And other rookie QBs have had more wins, but usually because they played on teams with dominant defenses and/or running games (Ben, Flacco, Matt Ryan).

For a team to depend on a rookie QB as much as Cinci depended on Dalton and still have a winning record is impressive. Newton is a worthy winner, but a vote for Dalton really isn’t that stupid either.

  34. londonbengal says: Feb 5, 2012 6:47 AM

    ‘onebucfan’ says….

    “one year wonder”…….

Of course winning ‘offensive’ rookie of the year’ is a one year wonder.

After the first season you’re no longer a rookie, dummy…..

  35. sdbengal says: Feb 5, 2012 7:56 AM

They start breaking down the film on him in the offseason, I’m sure he’ll have some problems next year. Take away his primary receiver and stop his running game and there’s not much left really. Vince Young is a backup now….

  36. pantherguy344 says: Feb 5, 2012 10:30 AM

Sdbengal that might be the most ignorant comment ive ever read on here. Take away anyones running game and primary receiver and there wouldnt be a whole lot left… except two pro bowl quality tight ends in cams case. In other news tim tebow loves jesus and vince wilfork is fat.
