Giants website says they are Super Bowl champions

giants

Giants.com got caught with enjoying a little premature celebration on Saturday.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News that the team’s website briefly displayed congratulations to the team for winning Super Bowl XLVI.

They also provided links to purchase Super Bowl championship gear and a special championship “badge” for fans to put on Facebook or Twitter.  (Patriots.com could barely contain their glee pointing out the error.)

I’m not that into karma or bad mojo, but suddenly I feel better about my Super Bowl pick.

The Giants are clearly the best team in the NFL, despite their 9-7 record. They should not have to suffer the indignity of actually playing Sunday when everyone already knows they are going to win.

Where’s the out cry?? This is not a big deal to me personally, teams have to prepare. I suspect the Giants have website content ready whether they win or lose. Better to slip with the Winning content than the Losing content. HOWEVER, when the dallas Mavericks prepped a parade rout in ’06, there was a huge outcry about being over confident and disrespecting the Heat. SO, where’s the outcry now? Or is there a double standard!?

  42. phillyrick22 says: Feb 4, 2012 6:20 PM

I did pick the giants to win but seeing them get blown out by the pats would be priceless!! Getting tired of hearing the big mouth giants players and they’re fans the past 6 weeks. I hope monday morning is a quiet one, ima need it to recover from the hang over im going to have…

  44. gcsuk says: Feb 4, 2012 6:20 PM

I can only assume that the Patriots ALSO have their website prepared for an eventual victory. They also have hats and t-shirts printed up (to give to players IMMEDIATELY after the game), newspaper headlines, etc… Most likely, the Patriots will also have champagne on ice in the locker in anticipation of a SB victory.

EVERY team in EVERY major sport does this. They have been doing this for God knows how long. The false indignation on this site by Patriot nation is insufferable.

This was a complete screw-up by the Giants IT dept. Nothing more, nothing less. If they leave it up there, then that’s arrogance. But I think it was just ridiculously poor timing.

Where’s the outcry? Any time a Giants player expresses confidence in their team, you can hear the howls and moans of indignation from the Patriot nation. “How DARE those Giants disrespect TB and BB? Don’t they know they are GODS?”.

Sorry, Patriots fans, but the rest of the NFL (and their fans) have been listening to your “high and mightiness” for years now. And now, when another team DARES to express confidence at the mere thought of playing you, you just can’t handle it. Hate to break it to you, but most of the NFL is absolutely SICK of listening to your “holier than thou” attitude.

  46. smakhhm says: Feb 4, 2012 6:26 PM

I love how people try to make out reasons for a win. Point is the giants are a more balanced team. I don’t care if this game feels like the rams / patriots game cuz guess what the rams NEVER had a flint like this one. Giants win 31-17

  47. patriotinvasion says: Feb 4, 2012 6:27 PM

WOW….the Patriots are winning this game. I want to see all of you Giants fans on this site late tomorrow night….especially the ones that somehow think they are just going to walk all over the Patriots because they beat us on a miracle catch in the final seconds 4 years ago by 3 points. Your team was 9-7, gave up 400 points and were swept by the Redskins….Patriots all day.

  48. bigbluefan1 says: Feb 4, 2012 6:29 PM

Something smells about this I am sure the page is ready to put up and someone hit the wrong key.

Do you not think the pats have a page ready to go up the minute the game is over I am sure they have even had it live for a minute to make sure it worked.

Now for all of you in fly over country keep on hating
Mean while its a flyover state that is robbing people blind with hotel rates charging a monthly rate for one night.
The NFL should never have a game in a small venue 60,000 seats what a joke and no hotels but if course that was done because the NFL was saying thank you to #18 who is leaving so no one will ever mention Indy again.

Go back to the land of turn left and leave the big boy sports for the big cities.
I have driven thru indy I blinked and was it was gone.

  49. donkeykong2011 says: Feb 4, 2012 6:30 PM

  50. bigbluenationdb says: Feb 4, 2012 6:30 PM

This stuff means more to the fans then the players. Do you think this is going to motivate the Patriots more then they already are. If these teams aren’t ready to play and need this as additional motivation then they shouldn’t even be playing.

  51. eigglesnosuperbowls says: Feb 4, 2012 6:32 PM

  57. cmb79 says: Feb 4, 2012 7:08 PM

Well, the Giants had better win now. No other recourse to explain this dumb mistake.

  58. dominator71030 says: Feb 4, 2012 7:14 PM

The website probably was just getting a page ready. The article says it was up BRIEFLY so it was probably an accident that they put it up. Every team has shirts and hats and whatever ready. After the championship games each team had shirts and hats with logos stating they are the nfc or afc winner.

  59. stevenfbrackett says: Feb 4, 2012 7:22 PM

Ah, Giants, it makes perfect sense to prepare this new front page to the website beforehand so that you can have it ready to go live as soon as the final whistle blows. It also make sense to upload it and test it.

But as someone who runs a website for an organization, I never upload the page I am testing with the actual name the page will have when it is live. You always use something like ‘testindex’ or hell, use ‘avocado’ or ‘yabbadabbadoo’ or something and then just change the file name when the time comes. The point is, that way only you can see it until it is ready to go live because no one will have that url or filename bookmarked nor with they manually type it in. Basic website management 101.

  67. briang123 says: Feb 4, 2012 7:57 PM

Anyone who thinks this is a big deal has obviously never worked in any type of news or media department. The Patriots have the same exact thing ready to go. The only reason this got out is that someone hit the publish button accidentally and someone happened to be online for that quick few seconds. The NFL website has both teams as Super Bowl champs, as does ESPN, Fox Sports, etc. Hundreds of radio stations have spots read yo to and are marked if Giants win or Patriots win.

This story makes what Tom Brady said at the pep rally last week look like Watergate in comparison.

You people aren’t very swift. Haven’t you ever noticed that IMMEDIATELY after conference championship games and the Super Bowl that the winning teams have t-shirts and hats? Haven’t you ever noticed that ESPN, NFL.com, and every other news and sports site have fancy graphics for the winners up IMMEDIATELY after these games?

Do you think they put the graphic designers, printers, and silk screeners to work after the final whistle, only to have finished products to hand out seconds later?

Both the Giants and Patriots, plus ESPN, NFL, SI, all the networks, etc. have graphics made for both teams ready to go with the click of a button. All the shirts, hats, posters, towels, and whatnot have already been made and are sitting around in boxes waiting for the outcome. The ones from the losing team get donated overseas.

You’ll notice right after the game that they’ll have a commercial saying, “Patriots/Giants fans, your team just won the Super Bowl! Spend money on championship stuff.” Do you think they wait until the game is over and scramble to have a commercial made in a minute and a half? They already have both of them made, then they air the one for the winner.

Every sports magazine and every newspaper in the country already have two front pages designed. All the graphics, commercials, and other paraphernalia has already been made and shipped out. Half will be used, half will be destroyed or donated.

What obviously happened here is that someone at the web site crew for Giants.com was supposed to FTP the files to a test server to make sure they would render properly, but instead FTPed the files to the live server.

Both teams have these graphics ready to go so they can put them up immediately following the game.

    Duh.

Payback for the Boston Globe running ads for a Patriots 19-0 book the week before Super Bowl 42.

The result tomorrow will be the same as it was four years ago….Giants win!!

  77. roadtrip3500 says: Feb 4, 2012 11:50 PM

    The league doesn’t sound worried… from ESPNNewYork.com:

“It is common practice for both teams to create web pages in advance of the conference championship games and Super Bowl,” the NFL said in a statement. “In this case, the hidden URL for the page was inadvertently available for a brief period of time while it was being positioned on the NFL server for possible post tomorrow night.”

  78. situsavaisprier says: Feb 5, 2012 1:59 AM

This is definitely a bad mistake. We all make mistakes, but some are worse than others.

OK, now I would like everyone to read this. So the Giants have been talking a lot of trash? I’m saying whoever says/said that is full of it. So I challenge ANYONE to show me 5 quotes at least of trash talk from the Giants for this Super Bowl. If they “can’t stop talking” then this should be very easy. I’m waiting. If that’s hard for some reason try the whole play-offs. I’ll be waiting.

They’re more likely wearing their Steelers SB 45 winners shirts right now. But whatever helps you sleep at night.

Obviously this was just a mistake, we know this already NYG fans. We’re mostly laughing at it, not getting really offended. That said, football is a game of emotion and even though players rationally know it’s no big deal, I bet some do get a little more charged up over it. Players listen to music, etc. to get themselves in the right mindframe too. It’s just another thing like that.

  80. denverdude7 says: Feb 5, 2012 6:28 AM

Josh McDaniels probably hacked the Giants website at Belichicks direction to gain a psychological advantage.

I, for one, am SO tired of New England bending and even breaking the rules that I am pulling for the Giants which is something no Broncos fan would ever consider.

  81. nesuperfan says: Feb 5, 2012 6:39 AM

For all those explaining what happened, and saying of course they prepare this ahead of time…no kidding. We are not stupid. We understand that.

But it is a major gaff, kind of funny, and fits in with the Giants’ egos this week. Priceless.

  82. clyde55 says: Feb 5, 2012 7:15 AM

Yea the pat fans are so funny, always arrogant and running this mistake up like it has something to do with the game.

How did the 19-0 trademark turnout ?

How about Brady making fun of Plax for saying the pats would only score 17 in 42 ?

How about Brady not shaking hands ?

Please, don’t cry … look at us the poor lil pats we are getting picked on. Really makes you look childish.

  83. clyde55 says: Feb 5, 2012 7:48 AM
