Shields, Bettis, DeBartolo not among ten finalists

Jerome Bettis AP

The announcement for the Pro Football Hall of Fame is coming shortly.

For now, we now five of the 15 finalists that won’t make the cut this year. Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, pass rusher Kevin Greene, 49ers owner Eddie Debartolo, receiver Tim Brown, and guard Will Shields didn’t make the cut to ten players.

We’re very surprised Shields didn’t make the final ten, but perhaps his former teammate Willie Roaf edged him out of the process.

UPDATE 6:00 p.m. ET: Cris Carter, Charles Haley, Andre Reed, Bill Parcells, and Aeneas Williams did not make the cut.

No, HOF voters just don’t like guards making the hall in their first year. Sad, Shields deserves to be in the hall.

HOF Selection Committee is a joke.

Welcome to the HoF Curtis Martin!! First bit of even halfway decent news Jets fans have had in a while.

Why are WRs so hated on in this process? Cris Carter was the #2 WR to Jerry Rice in just about every statistical category at one point. What else does he have to do to get in the Hall?

Can’t believe Charles Haley has been left out again. He has 5 Super Bowl rings, was considered a dominant pass rusher of his generation, 25th all time in sacks, and 5-time Pro Bowler. One wonders if his anti-social antics and belligerent behavior towards the press is working against him, still.

Too bad about Bill Parcells, too, who also didn’t get along with the press.

Tim Brown deserves a to be in! He revolutionized the wide receiver take-off stance. SuperBowl wins are an overrated factor.

    Told y’all parcells is overrated.
Surprised Haley did not make it.

how do Bettis and Carter get left out? The HOF voting is so flawed. To me, if a player is in the top 5 or even 10 of the top statistics for their position, how are they not HOF worthy? Bettis had better numbers than Martin and he didn’t make the first cut. Carter is top 5 in most categories with a top 10 in one category.

I can’t believe Touchdown Tim Brown still hasn’t made it!!! As one of only a handful of guys to catch 1000 passes and 100 TD you’d think it was a sure thing!!! Seems like a crime!!

  10. coseybedaman says: Feb 4, 2012 6:13 PM

Seriously?!?! Jerome Bettis, Cris Carter, Andre Reed, and Bill Parcells getting snubbed again. What an utter and complete joke this is getting to be.

HOF voting is very skewed. Chris Carter so deserves to be in, he did get robbed!!!

  12. jbaxt says: Feb 4, 2012 6:27 PM

What a joke; 12 probowls, more than some of these guys combined and Shields is left off?

1st ballot should’ve been an obvious choice for Shields, I like Roaf too but he had 11 pro-bowls???

Bettis is not HOF worthy. He was a good heavy runner but never a game-breaker (Bo Jackson) or a guy you would talk about like we did with Tomlinson, Emmith, Eddie George or Faulk.

    The Bus not HOF worthy

  14. raider23mike says: Feb 4, 2012 6:49 PM

I still do the Tim Brown pose when playing WR with friends or at school. Those to hands up are classic. 81

When I think of 81 I think of Tim Brown.
    80-Jerry Rice. 84-Moss. 88-Irvin.

@jmp527-Bettis had worse numbers then Martin, not better. Martin beat him in everything except the 1 SB ring. I think Bettis will get in and should, but he isn’t anywhere near the player Curtis Martin was.

Parcells is killin’ his chances of ever getting in. After bombing out in new England,New York and Dallas, he virtually killed his chance this year by his antics /FAILURE in Miami. And then when it was apparent what he created was a pile of sh!t, he bailed, leaving Jeff Ireland,Tony Sparano and his players to fend for themselves. At some point he will get in based on his 2 SB wins, but not for any of his work since.

Shields should be in, but the Hall hates guards. Kiper commented this morning that there are better guards not in the Hall, and I have to agree with him.

I am Steelers fan to the core, I love the Bus. But he is just not Hall of Fame worthy. I will always have a special place in my heart for the the Bus, but the HOF is for great players not good.

If I remember, Martin just passed the Bus slightly in the last year in yards gained. Martin is 4th and Bus is a close 5th. I guess if one is in the top 5 of his position, he should be “Hall worthy.” Both are, and will be!

    Bettis is not a HOFr.

  21. gerard33 says: Feb 5, 2012 1:00 AM

No WILL SHIELDS??? I am OUTRAGED!! What does a guy have to do??

  22. thebennyp says: Feb 5, 2012 5:55 AM

Parcells won 2 super bowls and is a Hall of Fame contender? George Seifert won 2 super bowls. Does that make him a hall of fame contender? Oh he only was part of 5 49ers super bowl teams…

  23. ravenmadness says: Feb 5, 2012 8:47 AM

I’m a Raven fan and it is ridiculous that Bettis is no a first ballot HOF
