Tiquan Underwood takes his release well

Tiquan Underwood AP

No, the Giants can’t claim receiver Tiquan Underwood after the Patriots cut him on Saturday.

New England traditionally makes roster moves on Saturdays, primarily because no team can claim the player cut until Monday. The led the league in such moves.

We’re not sure where Underwood will watch the game, but a lot of people are upset with the Patriots for making such a late move. Underwood is taking the release well.

“This Is Nothing But MOTIVATION,” Underwood wrote on Twitter. “I Been Thru A LOT…But There Are Ppl In This World w/ More Serious Problems So I Cant Hang The Head….Thank You Lord #Blessed . . . Good Luck To The New Enland Organization, The Coaches, & All My Teammates… #PatsNation.”

Underwood’s release should only be criticized if defensive end Alex Silvestro is inactive after being promoted from the practice squad Saturday. We’d be very surprised if that was the case.

Bill Belichick has spoken in the past about the extra energy expended during the Super Bowl because of the magnitude of the game and the long halftime. He likes having extra defensive linemen. Silvestro will likely be active and the team must have already decided Underwood would be inactive for the game.

BB does everything he feels gives his team the BEST chance of winning. If that means a defensive end like Silvestro is more of a game day asset, then so be it. I like the coach who puts the good of the team first.

Now he’ll get a plush seat next to Bob Kraft, and get to watch the game in style.

    AND still get a ring.

its just a dick move, thats all. But, what do you expect from the most unfeeling, inhuman coach in the league.

  8. synabar says: Feb 5, 2012 9:14 AM

what a low thing to do to a player.
    Typical Patriots.
I hope none of them get a ring.

  9. cullenand99 says: Feb 5, 2012 9:16 AM

Does he still get a ring if they win? That would suck if he didn’t.

    Note to haters:
This move is tied to guaranteeing that Gronkowski can play. Silvestro will take Gronkowski’s spot on special teams, where he’s part of the blocking formation. This will give Gronk some relief. If Gronk wasn’t going to play anyway, Tiquan would’ve been kept. Info per Mike Reiss at ESPNBoston.com.
Haters, you are ignorant about how roster moves impact game-day situations.

  13. tunescribe says: Feb 5, 2012 9:21 AM

Not a “cold” move by Belichick, but a necessary one. Underwood was going to be inactive anyway. The Pats need Silvestro to help with defensive line depth and probably, most importantly, to assume Gronkowski’s role on special teams. It’s all about winning the Super Bowl, people.

  15. txndave says: Feb 5, 2012 9:25 AM

That’s just sorry man. If there’s a coach in the league I can’t stand its belichick. He is the most boring, lifeless coach in tge history of sports, and I hope the giants kill the patriots today..

  16. 6ball says: Feb 5, 2012 9:25 AM

    .

I doubt this decision was reached at lunch Saturday. I’m certain that this scenario would have been discussed with Underwood prior to the announcement. Belichick consistently activates the 53 players who give the Patriots the best chance to win.

That is why BB is so good. He does not let his feelings get in the way when he has to make a decision. Most people second guess them selves…..not BB.

Agreed – he is even willing to cheat in order to win.

All you Pats fans who are thumbs upping this move because it’s your sainted BB making the move, could you please give me an example of one (1) classy thing that BB has ever done in his life? And don’t give me any of those contrived press release moments. Show me something real. Thank God that after Brady retires we won’t have to hear about this overrated robot anymore.

  20. dclogicatlast says: Feb 5, 2012 9:35 AM

This is a grown man and a business. It is what it is. He probably knew days before it happened, and I’m sure the Pats will take care of him.

  21. kellyb9 says: Feb 5, 2012 9:40 AM

He probably knew 2 weeks ago he was getting cut. Either way, who cares… he’s been on and off the team all year and he was probably going to take a grand total of 7 snaps. I don’t even think he plays special teams.

  22. markpfs says: Feb 5, 2012 9:41 AM

there is zero chance this a good thing in the locker room. move should have made made two weeks ago. classless.

  23. duanethomas says: Feb 5, 2012 9:46 AM

Just a normal roster move, the kid was on the roster Tuesday so he will get his full SuperBowl share. I’m sure he will be brought back sometime next week, bad timing for him, but the Pats are giving themselves the best chance to win.

  24. billinlouisiana says: Feb 5, 2012 9:48 AM

The DE they signed to replace him is Alex Silvestro. I checked his stats and he is an undrafted rookie that was acvtive for 1 game this year and has no stats. I doubt he sees any playing time unless the game turns into a blow out. Underwood has been in the league for 3 years, 2 with Jacksonville. He has been in 6 games this year with 3 catches. I doubt he was going to be active for the game. Sounds like a move to get him a superbowl paycheck as some kind of reward. Underwood will get a check no matter what since he was a the roster for 3 or more games.

From the CBA concerning post season checks.

Section 4. Conference Championship; Super Bowl Game:
    (a) A player who at the time of the game in question is and has been on the Active List or Inactive List of a Club participating in the game for at least three previous games (i.e., regular or postseason) will receive the full amount designated in Section 2 for such game.

Classiest thing Bb has ever done is within just hours of realizing the error he just made, resigned from the HC job of the dysfuncional NYJ allowing them to continue to be the laughingstock of the NFL.
JETS mantra: Just End The Season.

The Pats haven’t gone to the SB 5 out the past 10 years by being stupid. A cold move on the surface , but as usual BB has cold logic behind it.

Underwood sounds like a class act, best of luck to him next year. Might wanna ditch the 80’s haircut, tho.

The moment Underwood got the Logo Haircut he was doomed. Any sign of individualism and Bill the cheat wont stand for it. Pretty pathetic move when ya work your butt off all season and he shows his appreciation by cutting him day before SB. Sorry dude, but you should know that he doesnt want any extra spotlight on the Pats, unless its for him or Tom Fraidy…

Yeah, maybe in your team’s weak locker room.

The Patriots have seen lots of guys get cut this year and they keep buying in. They buy in because they have mental toughness, and they know it’s a business and things sometimes have to get done. Things that most teams are too scared to do.

“Classless” is just another of the crybabies’ ways of saying “I’m jealous.”

What a bunch of babies most fans are. The Pats could not release him before yesterday or the Giants could have picked him up and gotten the whole game plan.

There is little chance Underwood would have played, and they likely told him before yesterday that he wasn’t playing if not that he would be released.

He’ll be back with the Pats next year and if they win he’ll get a ring. There are far far worse things in life to go through.

I also have to think if this was the Giants or any other team doing this most of the people complaining here would have praised Coughlin for doing a hard thing that was needed to give his team a better chance to win.

BB put Vinny Testaverde in the last game of the season just so he would have 12 straight years with a TD.

In Doug Flutie’s last career game, BB let him kick the only drop kick in the last 46 years.

BB regularly put LB Mike Vrabel in as a TE. Vrabel is the only player in NFL history to have 12 total receptions all for TDs.

BB never, ever bad mouths his opponents. He is the very definition of class and the consummate football professional. Every other coach in the NFL emulates him even if they don’t publicly say so.

We could tell you more, but haters gonna hate. Crawl back in your hole, troll.
