Cruz plans to begin cashing in

Super Bowl XLVI Getty Images

Though he wisely declined an invitation to parlay his propensity for the salsa into an appearance on Dancing With The Stars, Giants receiver Victor Cruz isn’t inclined to defer indefinitely the generation of income from off-field endeavors.

Cruz reportedly has hired IMG Worldwide to negotiate marketing and endorsement agreements.

“They have a great reputation around the world,” Cruz said of IMG, via Forbes.com.  “They have represented some of the most iconic athletes across a myriad of sports, and I am honored to be among them.”

It’s a smart move.  Cruz can find a way to cash in on his fame without creating any distractions to his development as a receiver.  And his story is compelling.  And he seems to be a genuinely nice kid.  And it makes me feel really old to refer to him as a kid.

Anyway, one of the biggest breakout stars of the 2011 season could soon be showing up in plenty of places other than a football field.  Given that he received a base salary of only $450,000 in 2011 and that he’ll receive a modest raise of $40,000 in 2012, he deserves everything he can get.

Including an even bigger raise from the team that employs him.

Please don’t do an insurance company ad where they destroy your trademark TD celebration ala Aaron Discount Double Check Rodgers.

And the Giants will. They’re not going to let this kid see free agency. He’ll have a contract by the end of September at the latest.

  9. blacknole08 says: Feb 6, 2012 11:29 PM

Not to be a pessimist but I think he needs to have a solid start to the 2012 season before the Giants give him a big contract extension. Plenty of receivers have had one good year and turned out to be duds. Plus he got injured in 2010 and missed most of the season. He had an amazing year though.

If the Giants and the League were smart, they would use him in advertising on the Spanish-language stations since the League wants to grow the sport outside the US and what team doesn’t want to expand/strengthen its own brand?

It could be as simple as using his highlights in a series of commercials to sell the upcoming season. Let him go on the Spanish-language talk shows and tell his story and educate the people in the Latin Americas about American football.

Maybe next year, the Pro Bowl can be in Puerto Rico. Let the players have the sunny beach getaway they want while also expanding the market and being much more convenient for the media to cover.

While other NFL receivers have accomplished the feat, a Wendy’s Everyday Value Meal commercial would be a quick hit:

    (Background jingle: “My-my my 99…“)
“Hi, I’m Victor Cruz, and I know a little something about 99…”

  12. tatum064 says: Feb 6, 2012 11:47 PM

What a find by Floyd Reese. From Patterson, New Jersey, to the Giants pre-season squad to a Super Bowl. Cruz control!!!

Seems like a great guy, but are companies really lining up for Victor Cruz endorsements? I think the priority is

    Tebow
    Rodgers
    Manning #1
    Manning #2
    Brees
    Michael Strahan
    Erin Andrews

He at least deserves what they offered Steve Smith. The kid is a great compliment to Nicks. If the giants can find an athletic TE to go with them watch out.

  20. Mr. Wright 212 says: Feb 7, 2012 12:29 AM

Good for him, he deserves it. Just stay focused. He has plenty of people to keep him grounded right here in the tri-state, that’s for sure.

  22. sunsation3413 says: Feb 7, 2012 12:40 AM

Before you go imploring the Giants to pay him he needs to keep working and prove he isnt just a one hit wonder. He does seem like a great young man and I hope he continues his success.

  23. weeny00 says: Feb 7, 2012 12:43 AM

cruz needs a new contract.. cruz is a bargain but they have to keep him happy or else he’ll be gone by 2013…. keep the 3 muskeeteer Manningham, Hicks and cruz ..giants have a bright future…

  24. wave222 says: Feb 7, 2012 1:00 AM

    Why not ??
It seems to be a part of all sports now !!

  25. 4thquartermagic says: Feb 7, 2012 1:32 AM

Obviously he’s underpaid for his production but with how stacked that WR core is, I don’t see him getting a new deal anytime soon.

I mean look how the giants treat productive pass rushers (ask Osi) they just reload in the draft.

Doing business this way has got NY two superbowls in 5 years. Why change now?

  29. MikeisWise says: Feb 7, 2012 2:19 AM

A raise? How about he go out next year and do it again first. He’ll get his payday eventually if he repeats it. From the Giants or from someone else.

  30. seahawksfan25 says: Feb 7, 2012 2:44 AM

He would be a perfect fit for any team in this league. I hope he continues his success. I love watching him play.

  31. bleedgreen11 says: Feb 7, 2012 2:47 AM

Great receiver, no doubt, and I admire his attitude. Your title is incredibly misleading, but I realize you did that to generate page hits, just like a true blogger would do.

Wait, did he say Only $450k? Comparisons huh? How about compare to regular people, you know, the other 350.6 million out of 351 million in america. Dont disrespect us with that, its offensive.

  33. murphintampa says: Feb 7, 2012 7:36 AM

Why doesn’t he just cut to the chase and start his holdout right now?

  34. east96st says: Feb 7, 2012 7:58 AM

Floyd Reese? Hicks? Seems some bandwagoneers need to get their names straight BEFORE they post.

Give me a break. 99.99% of those 350.6 million Americans would be cashing in as much as possible if put in Cruz’s position.

I hope he keeps working hard. Love it when a hometown guy does well. Keep up the good work, Victor! If only his dad could be here to see all this…

  40. RexCanCoach says: Feb 7, 2012 9:53 AM

This is the same Victor Cruz that was in a NYC nightclub at 2 am in November when a man started shooting, killing one patron and injuring 2 others.

I think 1 other NYG was with him.

Maybe ownership should relax a bit before putting up mega bucks and make sure success isn’t going to his salsa head.

  41. andyreidisfat says: Feb 7, 2012 10:02 AM

Gotta give both Cruz and the giants personnel staff ( one of the best in football) all the credit.

Cruz is the reason why Mario is gone. I hope they don’t pay him so we can see him blow up like Jackson did this year. Even giants fans have to admit the kid has diva written all over him

Looks like IMG is already on the job. There is no way Cruz came up with “myriad” on his own.

    Apple, meet orange.

How about comparing what he made to Ocho Stinko along with their respective productivity this year.

Anybody want to lay odds on Cruz having a Super Bowl hangover?

    I would not be shocked.
