Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel spoke with Chiefs reporters on a conference call Tuesday about the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

We weren’t on the call, but the reporters that were passed along the necessary information. Which is easier for us.

Crennel answered criticisms that Daboll is just another branch of the same old New England coaching tree in Kansas City.

“I know a lot of people say he’s another guy from the New England tree, but it’s been a while since he’s been in New England,” Crennel said. “Sometimes knowing people and knowing what they’re about is important. I know that was important to me.”

The new Chiefs head coach talked about balance on offense. And he pointed out that Kansas City won’t suddenly start copying the Patriots. They will look more like the 2011 Dolphins.

“To say that it’s similar to what we did last year or similar to New England or similar to Miami, it’s probably more similar to what Miami ran than anything else,” Crennel said.

That remark may attract some snickers, but Daboll did a fine job in Miami with players like Matt Moore and Reggie Bush. The Dolphins weren’t the most talented group in the league. Daboll was apparently Crennel’s pick for coordinator all along, but the team had to wait until his contract was up in Miami.

Daboll said he wanted an attacking, up-tempo offense that would use multiple personnel groups.

Daboll will not be a position coach and will focus on his coordinator responsibilities. It remains unclear if quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn will remain with the team, but Crennel wants him to stay.
