With Orton’s last game as a Chief, he indicated that Cassel was the the Chief’s QB. However, if Orton feels that he has an advantage over Cassel as to his own talent level and that he can be the starter, he might just say that this is the right spot for him. He is somewhat familiar with the players, and he knows that they are on the verge of a really good season. Plus, they play in a week division. Denver doesn’t have a legitimate QB, Oakland is the same disfunctional team they been for years, and the Chargers still have Turner to keep things screwed up. Plus, if Orton comes in and wins the starters job, the Chiefs have a competent backup. And even if Cassel starts game one, he will be on a short leash, as Pioli knows if he blows this, that his (Pioli’s) job is on the line.

Cassel the presumptive starter?

Haven’t checked over there lately but I’d wager that after the naming of both Romeo and Daboll, heads are now really exploding over at the Chiefs planet forum.

The one thing to keep in mind here is that Romeo basically credited Ortons for helping him get his starting gig and has basically thrown all sorts of hints out about wanting Orton back but he understands Orton is a free agent .

Now remember Daboll was the Dolphins coordinator last year and the coaching staff wanted to trade for Orton but the owner shot the trade down at the last minute . So Daboll would would be very aware of what Orton is capable of as well.

I don’t understand people who don’t like pioli…the chiefs were in the dumps with Peterson/herm. now they are actually competing. they could of won the division with charles berry moakie and cassel hurt plus the hardest schedule. but I guess people are never satisfied

Why do people honestly think Peyton is going to go play anywhere if the colts do in fact let him go? He’s only got a few years left in him at best and if he can’t play for a team many that has a realistic shot at the superbowl within 2 years he probably won’t sign.Best fit for him might be 49ers–if they had better play at qb,they would have been playing the patriots,not the giants…..

Cassel is a flat out joke,he had a better supporting cast in New England, 3yrs of this joker the writing has been on the wall forever. You’ll will be saying the same thing next year. complaining about how bad Matt Cassel is.

Get rid of Scott Pioli,he’s sinking this organization and creating division amongst team members.

No way they will bring in Orton at 5 mil+ a year for 3-4 yr deal and that’s what it would take.

Don’t think they pay guys that much to ride a bench whether it be Orton or Cassel.

Some desperate team that loses out on the Luck/RGIII/Peyton Manning/Matt Flynn sweepstakes is going to throw starter money at Orton.

No way he stays around to have an “open competition” with Cassel in KC.

Brady and Rodgers are both good quarterbacks, but will always be overrated because of their system. If Brady was on the Cleveland Browns in Pat Shurmurs’ offense, with Pat Shurmur’s playcalling, and Pat Shurmur’s playbook, with Pat Shurmur’s personnel, do you think he would have done much better than Colt McCoy? Conversely, if McCoy was on New England with all the talent around him, don’t you think he’d do okay? We saw Cassel go 11-5 in New England then all of a sudden he sucks in KC?

Matt Cassel has had two good years in the NFL (2008 and 2010) and has lead the Chiefs to the playoffs and division title. He might not have the arm that Orton does but he also won’t throw that costly INT either.

Orton is an average QB at best and hasn’t proven he can win on a consistent basis. The Bears and Broncos got rid of him for a reason.

If I had to put all my eggs in one basket, I’d go with Cassel.

Answer: NO!

Hell, Jake Delhomme has been given WAY more chances than Quinn.
Tavaris Freakin Jackson has been given opportunities.

The Chiefs will miss the playoffs by one or two games every year for as long as Cassel is QB.

To his credit, though, he does take a pounding pretty well, which is a prerequisite to playing QB in KC.

Chiefs are a good team, one of the best young secondaries in the league with Carr, Flowers and a healthy Berry. Whole defense is good.

BTW, this article includes quotes from the Chiefs conference call with the media this morning. What it doesn’t include is quotes from various interviews last week stating how much Romeo liked Kyle Orton and how much he’d like to see him back in KC.
If Orton and Cassel are battling it out in training camp, it’s highly doubtful Cassel is the starter week 1.

They only have two QBs on the roster right now. Of course the coaches are going to say they’re confident in them. They’re not going to throw them under the bus, in case they’re stuck with them and/or they try to trade them. It means nothing right now.
