Schiano is regarded as a “ball control and defense” type of coach. Much like Dungy was when he was here. His OCs left quite a bit to be desired. Shula, Christiansen, et al. If you go into this season expecting anything other than running plays and dump offs, especially for a first time coach playing it close to the vest, you’re going to be highly disappointed. Until they get that defense shored up, none of this is going to matter. Defense wins championships.

The Bucs never blocked anyone from interviewing Kiffin. Kiffin had made it clear he did not want to be a Head Coach and that he was not leaving Tampa.

Miller was a solid QB those years.. I’m pretty sure not having any talent at WR or TE limits play calling.. Give em a chance. Freeman is a stud.. Get rid of Winslow… That guy kills this young bucs squad..

I give him credit. He did guide the Bears to a 13-3 record in this first year. Other than that…yea the rest was painfully forgettable. Ask Kordell Stewart.

Shoop was QB coach for the Raiders during the disastrous 2-14 season under Art Shell, and in fact he took over as OC late in the year when Shell realised that he was at least an upgrade over Tom ‘B&B’ Walsh. That’s the only OC he would be an upgrade over though.

His QBs that year were Aaron Brooks, who had at least been serviceable in New Orleans, and the young Andrew Walter. Under Shoop’s coaching, Brooks regressed so much that he dropped out of the league altogether. Walter moved to New England where PFT reported one of the coaches there saying that they were “shocked” at how badly he had been coached in Oakland.

If this is true Buccs fans, say goodbye to your hopes of Josh Freeman ever becoming an elite quarterback.

Granted, it was a while ago. People change & hopefully for the Bucs’ sake get better. But, times were lean and frustrating as hell with Shoop as OC of the Bears… my condolences, Bucs fans…

Uhh, what coordinators are you referring to? As far as I understand, no one else has tried to interview McNulty, and the GB TE coach was also blocked from interviewing with the Dolphins. So, am I missing something?

Also, this article says Lazor turned down the job. Who said he was offered it? All the reports I’m hearing make it seem like the Bucs decided against him, not the other way around.

Maybe they should also consider bringing in Bob Babich to serve as the d-coordinator. And I’m sure Mike Tomczak could come in to be the QB coach and I can’t imagine Rashaan Salaam wouldn’t want to coach the RB’s.

What are they thinking?

My guess is that this has less to do with “the old boy’s network”, teams being upset with the Bucs for hiring a college coach, or teams with an ax to grind against the Bucs and more to do with how long the Bucs took to hire a head coach. For many of the teams that Schiano is calling on the off-season is in full swing and teams don’t want to have to deal with hiring another coach as they’re gearing up for the combine/ draft/ OTAs.

As another Bears fan, I totally agree with spacincasen. I felt bad for Bucs fans yesterday when it was announced that Schiano was considering Ron Turner. Then I saw today’s headline and cringed in pain/remorse/pity/disbelief.

Wow. I remember Shoop very well as a Bears fan. He was famous for his constant use of bubble screens, and absolute refusal to ever try anything remotely unexpected or let his qbs (granted, they were terrible) attempt a pass over 5 yards. He also liked to call passes that were 3 yard routes when we needed 5. His tenure may have been the lowest point of the Bears offense in the past 20 years. That says a lot.

He has tried to get seasoned NFL assistants and has been blocked at every turn.

Schiano was not “planning on putting together a college heavy staff”. The rest of the league is forcing him too.

It doesn’t look like he has much of a choice. Teams are denying permission to talk to his first and second candidates, so he’s got to get a staff from somewhere.
