Vick, Burress, Suh, T.O. among most disliked athletes

vick Getty Images

Three months ago, a poll of the public found that Michael Vick was the most disliked player in the NFL. The latest poll from the same outfit finds that Vick’s unpopularity extends beyond football, and he’s actually the most disliked athlete in all of America.

According to the latest surveys conducted by Nielsen and partner E-Poll Market Research, published by Forbes, Vick is the most disliked athlete in all of sports, just edging out Tiger Woods. The polling shows that Vick is one of the most famous athletes in America, and that while many NFL fans like him, the people who know who Vick is but don’t consider themselves NFL fans despise him.

“His awareness is up there with Peyton Manning, but a lot of it is people knowing him for the wrong reasons,” says Stephen Master, V.P. of Sports for Nielsen.

After Vick and Woods, the next athlete on the list of the most disliked is Jets receiver Plaxico Burress, who was also second to Vick on the poll three months ago of the most disliked NFL players. Shooting himself in the leg didn’t win Burress any fans.

Where the latest poll shows a major shift from the previous poll is that Ndamukong Suh now registers as No. 4 on the list of the most disliked athletes. In the previous round of polling, conducted a few weeks before Suh’s infamous Thanksgiving stomp, Suh did not register among the most disliked NFL players.

NBA players Kris Humphries, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant follow Suh on the list of the most disliked athletes, and then the next most disliked athlete is Terrell Owens. That “honor” for Owens is impressive because he’s the only athlete on the list who wasn’t active in 2011: Even though he hasn’t played an NFL game in more than a year, a whole lot of people still hold on to negative feelings for T.O.

4 – Kicks a guy for repeatedly untying his shoes

The Suh hate has to stop. It’s ridiculous.

Funny how we like lists. Labels. We like to categorize…makes us feel better, especially if We ain’t on the bad one. All we have to do though is look deep into the mirror…now there is another list. Can’t say that we like that much, so we go making up or latching on to these other lists…makes us feel better. In regards to Mike Vick, as an Eagle fan since 1966, it is the best move the Eagles ever made. I don’t care if he runs another play..it ain’t about that folks. Maybe he doesn’t deserve a second chance, but gets one, just like us. The most despised person that ever lived was hung on a cross, and that is why we get out of here alive.

Um…that’s exactly what obstruction of justice is. He did plead guilty to obstruction in exchange for the murder charges to be dropped after testifying against his co-defendants. The way he has completely changed his image, and what he has contributed to the community since then is phenomenal. But I’m a Ravens fan and I even know Ray did something very, very wrong that night. Those are the facts.

    @Gordon

Big Ben is not on the list because he his hated by mostly people that are jealous of the Steelers success. The Steeler Nation are many and they know that he was never charged with anything. That was also proven. The fact that he was an idiot to put himself in those positions most of us agree.

I dont think Vick is hated because he’s a black man with a fortune. Animal lovers just cant forgive the guy because of what he did (which was most definitely a horrible thing). I dont blame them for hating him, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I forgave him a long time ago. Although, karma has not forgiven him, they wont win a SB with him @ QB. I like the eagles (love is too strong of a word for this underachieving sorry excuse for a team, average @ best coaching staff and poor mis-management of their front office).

With the exception of Big Ben (which I agree should make this list, but I didn’t have a say in this, plus they probably polled everyone who lives in Pittsburgh), what other white player (not second tier guys, only stars in this league) is CURRENTLY relevant in the NFL, that has actually made news.

I’m surprised Big Ben isn’t on the list, I personally don’t hate Big Ben but I understand why a lot of people would.

The Ray Lewis conversation is an interesting one and I think exemplifies exactly what’s at the root of this poll – it’s a static perception of an athlete. Ravens Fan, Steelers Fan, any person really, has to see that Ray was a part of the death of two men that night (and was convicted of such). But over the last 10 years Ray has been able to rehabillitate his image through tireless work in the community and support of his teammates. Does that take away from his previous transgressions? No, but it does show how someone can change their life and people’s perception through hard work.

So this leads me to this question – does this mean that the guys on the above list have the same opportunity to have their perceptions changed as well?

Somehow people confuse “testefied against the killers” with “Covered up.”

Comparisons to OJ and Casey Anthony? Really? I wonder if these people know that Ray was never accused or implicated in killing someone. He was out at a club, a friend of a friend who was with Ray got into a fight, stabbed and killed a guy, then got in Ray’s limo. Ray later testified against the killer. OJ viciously murdered his ex wife and her husband, Casey Anthony murdered her child.

And can we cut it with the Michael Vick hatred? Can no man ever change? Do we not believe that someone can grow, mature, realize they were wrong and work to change their life? If we don’t believe that a man can change then we might as well fix the justice system from a system of reform to a lock them up and throw away the key system. If anyone commits a crime then they go to jail and never see the light of day again, it’s a life sentance. From the moment he was caught he has done everything that he could possibly do to deserve a second chance. He works hard for himself and his teamates, works with PETA to help fight against dog fighting, give speaches to urban kids about why dog fighting is wrong and why what he did was wrong. He can’t change the past and never will be able to, all he can do is work keep others from making those mistakes. And he has done that and some. If you dont’ believe in Michael Vick than you don’t believe in redemption, if that is the case… I feel sorry for you.

His selfless dedication to making his city a better place will be a far greater contribution to humanity than what a lifetime of pft trolls could ever hope to accomplish.

Big Ben Rapethlisberger def. should be on the list though.

Id like to see the demographics of exactly who was polled. Woman hate Chris Humphries because of Kim K, most don’t even know what team he plays for. Animal lovers hate Vick, but much of the “sane” world have chosen to recognize that the man has served his time for his crime, and don’t hate him, supported by the fact that he now has endorsements and a new contract again. Plaxico shot himself, i don’t know how he got on the list, before the shooting, no one felt this way about him, how does shooting yourself make you hated? Woman hate Tiger, i haven’t heard any man say he doesn’t like Tiger Woods, well definitely not a man of any darker ethnicity..lol ..I won’t argue about Suh because he has made some dirty plays. My question is: where the hell is Big Ben, a man that has been accused of rape 2x, doesn’t make the list? He should be in the top 2. Suprised Kobe isn’t on list, though I think he’s great, many hate him because he comes off as arrogant and doesn’t give a rats a** what anyone in media thinks of him

Are you retarded ? If Americans hated seeing a black man with a fortune then why would Americans even be watching basketball or football ?

  84. tformation says: Feb 8, 2012 11:10 AM

I think that the top 4 disliked NFL athletes are black says something about the preferences of American sports fans. I’d like to see who the top 4 liked NFL athletes are. I’d be curious if they were all white. (Peyton would probably make that list… would Troy Polamalu?)

Having said that, Vick certainly earned his place on the top of that list. Suh & T.O. I understand, but I’m scratching my head over Plaxico. Being stupid enough to shoot yourself & then going to jail for shooting yourself doesn’t bring out hatred for me. It makes me feel sorry for the Plax, honestly. I don’t understand Plax on this list at all.

  85. schilhater says: Feb 8, 2012 11:12 AM

So hoping Vick wins a ring to shut these people up once and for all. Same with Suh and those feisty Detroit Lions – it is halftime in America, and they need to get it done…for the Motor City’s sake.

    ————————————————-

winning a super bowl ring will never change what he did. only a clueless moron would say something like that

  86. jamezz23 says: Feb 8, 2012 11:13 AM

I believe that Suh will get back in the good graces of everyone. He’s a super nice guy, I actually got to meet him, saw him hanging out at the new motor motor city casino. He loves talking with fans just a good dude all around.

  87. buckybadger says: Feb 8, 2012 11:14 AM

People just love to hate. This poll has no meaning to it and it just for sports writers to write some hate.

I am sick and tired of people bashing Mike Vick for fighting some d@mn dogs. In many communities throughout the country dog fighting is viewed in the same regards as one would view hunting or fishing. It is considered a leisure activity or hobby. Mike Vick paid his debt to society and people refuse to let him live. What is the difference between Vick and a hunter who sits in a tree stand for hours waiting to blow the brain out of a deer with a high poweed rifle or shotgun. I know a “intelligent person” would stay the the obvious that one is legal and one is not. The reason being that we (humans) have chosen to domesticate dogs and not deer! Furthermore, the pitbull is not even a natural dog breed. These strong vicious animals were created to be fighters, do your research!!! When Vick is caught fighting yorkshire terriers then I’ll despise him until then who cares…

  89. yooperman says: Feb 8, 2012 11:25 AM

When I saw pictures of the Classic Chevy Suh banged up, I was sick. He belongs on this list for putting hip hop tires and rims on one of the best classic cars ever. Walt Kowalski should have added this faux pas in his will.

  90. dempsey63 says: Feb 8, 2012 11:26 AM

Seeing Suh and Haynesworth playing side-by-side on the same stomping grounds would rival Pesci and De Niro for sheer intimidation.

  91. conjecture101 says: Feb 8, 2012 11:27 AM

    Here’s my list;

Drew Brees – guy’s always putting his kids on camera
Ray Rice – most overrated player in the history of the NFL
Matt Light – dances with pop groups after losing super bowls
Aaron Rodgers – Does horrible commercials and TD celebrations.
Greg Jennings – A system WR who thinks he’s Jerry Rice.
Mark Sanchez – a mediocre, media trained, QB who presents himself like a polite little leaguer.

    @conjecture101

Something tells me Sanchez wouldn’t be too bothered being included in that list!

Vick didn’t make a mistake. He killed dogs because they wouldn’t perform in a brutal “sport” that most people consider immoral.

Look up Psychopath. Basically doesn’t feel a thing and can’t reform if he didn’t feel it was wrong in the first place. How many of you apologists would electrocute a dog?

This opinion will get alot of bashing because over half of the people here, likely nearly ALL will disagree. What Vick did WAS a huge deal. it was a sick, pathetic crime and he deserved the punishment and hate he gets to this day. As for a black man with fortune, uh Cam Newton??? how about Dwayne Wade??? Blake Griffin??? are they hated due to their fortune???

i agree Vegaskid, i am surprised Tebow isnt hear, he’s hated by alot it seems

Now for the answer to why TO is hated. it’s simple, he’s a WR with a huge ego to the point that he throws QBs under the bus consistantly and now he is having money issues which could only add to the hatred of Owens.

  111. steeelfann says: Feb 8, 2012 1:34 PM

as for the comment “people don’t like it when black men have money” and thinking it’s racist or hating, michael jordan is liked by almost every person i would say. why, cause he doesn’t do stupid crap like killing dogs(vick), or playing dirty(suh), or boasting about how he is the best player and that everyone else on his team caused the loss(t.o.).

And if this is actually true, then the NFL and their refs are just as biased towards AA’s because this explains why AA QBs don’t get roughing the passer flags as white QBs do even when they get whiffed ala Tom Brady’s whiff off Terrell Suggs.

Thank you, they know this has nothing to do with dogs. When Vick’s case was exposed there was a headline article written everyday, and it has continued like that for the past five years. Right now in there is a coach accused of molesting and sodomizing a number of young men, I don’t see articles written on a daily basis, and I don’t see any pickets signs outside his door. Even though the fool lives right behind an elementary school. But these fools are still after five years talking about some dogs, they didn’t care about in the first place. This has nothing to do with dogs, but everything to do with their hatred/bigotry.

  126. bleedeaglegreen says: Feb 10, 2012 5:10 PM

Vick deserves & has earned his “most hated athlete” title. It has nothing to do with “race” or bigotry”, it has to do with his behavior, plain & simple. The Vick supporters love to bring in anyone & everyone they can to defend Vick. They love to bring in Ben but always leave out Kobe. They love to bring in Sandusky but forget Eddie Long. Talk about Roger Clemmens & Mark Maguire & leave out Barry Bonds. We forget (conveniently) Dr Kermit Gosnell.

Mike Vick took innocent family pets & taped up their mouths & threw them into a fighting ring with trained killers & thought it was funny to watch them get torn apart. He took already bleeding & crying animals & TORTURED them in some of the most inhuman ways anyone could think of for some sort of ghoulish enjoyment. He did the things he did for a 6 YEAR period; his first check from the Falcons was used to buy the property on Moonlight Drive that was his torture palace.

The things Mike Vick did were no mistake, you don’t do something multiple times a week for SIX YEARS then claim mistake. He knew damn well what he was doing was wrong, his father told him; he ignored his father & under the protection of his mother did as he pleased to whomever he pleased. Just ask Sonia Elliott who he infected with incurable disease one again for his own entertainment. Add to it his pathetic, pathological lying to his employers, the commish, the police & anyone else he spoke to. Only after being cornered did he “come clean”.

Mike Vick is a human piece of garbage that doesn’t deserve the consideration he gets. The people that defend him show ignorance each time they ignore the crimes of Gosnell, Bonds, Eddie Long, Kobe Bryant & use others to defend Mike Vick. Bottom line is: if Mike Vick was some fool standing on a corner in one of his defenders neighborhoods, no one would be defending him…he is only revered because he can throw a football. Too bad his supporters can’t see what they are teaching THEIR kids.

  127. setfree11411 says: Feb 25, 2012 11:03 PM

I find it absolutely disgusting that people can’t forgive Michael Vick for what he did. Right now, there has been the story of the century going on in PA news, and that is with Jerry Sandusky. I would rather dislike a guy who has anal sex with 10 year old boys in the shower than a guy who tortured and killed dogs. Yes, I say dislike, because I do not hate anyone or anything and I am very proud of that fact. Those kids will be traumatized for life over what happened to them, and yet people still want to hate Vick. Absolutely unreal. A few years back, I declared myself no longer a fan of the Eagles after they brought in Vick, and wanted nothing to do with them. However, after seeing everything the man has done for society and the community after he was released changed my mind. What most of you on here are saying is that Michael Vick doesn’t deserve redemption. I agree with the guy who said that if that was the case, let’s just take every single inmate and lock them up for life. How does that sound? What Michael Vick did was awful and downright cruel. I, however, pride myself on being a better person than most of you on here in that I believe a man should get a second chance. If you are not happy with him, then boycott the eagles. That’s what another so called “religious group” was doing on a petition site, which pretty much makes the fact that they follow God null and void to begin with, in regards to the forgiveness thing. This is the most hate filled nation on this planet, and I am ashamed to say I live here, because of people who don’t believe in second chances. Not to be preachy or anything, but God does say “Do not judge another person, lest you be judged in this same manner with which you have judged them.” I know most of you are going to ignore this anyway, because that’s America for you, but at least I stated what was on my mind.

  128. bleedeaglegreen says: Mar 2, 2012 2:18 PM

This isnt about religion or forgiveness it’s about premeditated CRUELTY. plain & simple. MIKE VICK IS NO GOOD. Sandusky aside. What he did has nothing to do with VICK. Stop using others to defend Vick!!
