Getty ImagesThe Bucs have been having a hard time hiring key assistants for new coach Greg Schiano’s staff. They’ve finally landed one of the men Schiano coveted.
Peter King of SI.com reported last month that Schiano wanted to hire Butch Davis, either to be the team’s defensive coordinator or to be an assistant head coach. Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com now reports that Schiano has hired Davis.
Per Marvez, Davis will be the team’s senior defensive assistant.
Davis was defensive line coach for the 1992 Cowboys and defensive coordinator for the 1993 edition of the team. Both won the Super Bowl.
He thereafter spent six seasons as head coach at the University of Miami, before jumping to the Cleveland Browns. Fired after four seasons in Cleveland, Davis resurfaced in Chapel Hill. He was out of coaching in 2011.
In 1999 and 2000, Schiano worked for Davis at Miami, as the team’s defensive coordinator.

I never thought I’d be relishing the ‘glory days’ of when Butch was the coach of the Browns. Good football coach for sure but he let the power he assimilated get to his head. Good to see him back in the NFL though.
Finally sheez!
This team is erratic!!
Huge addition to the staff… I wish it was as DC though but I will take the knowledge and experience he brings! Go Bucs
Who is the coordinator? and what does a senior defensive assistant do?
Sorry Bro..welcome to Tampa!!
Hopefully he won’t be able to ruin another QB…(Tim Couch)
As long as he’s not in charge of personnel, Davis is a great game day coach. He actually lead the Browns to the playoffs
What kind of title is that. What is his job duties then oversee the defensive coordinator
Bucs have to be a favorite for the #1 pick next year.
Finally some experience to that staff. They now have two great defensive minds.
Garbage coaching staff this guy is putting together.
I do not think Butchy Poo was fired at Cleveland, He had a nervous breakdown and quit for medical reasons.
hell yeah about damn time now lets get a oc and fast
Davis quit the Browns during the season!
Good to know that the Bucs have a succession plan. Davis will be the interim head coach when Schiano gets fired.
GREAT move. We’ve pooled some elite talent on our defensive line and Butch can be the guy to capitalize on that talent. I’m ecstatic!
Greg Schiano’s pretty sure he’s finally got a team that can win the Big East.
This guy has been run off from college and hmm what do you know hes back with a terrible team again. History repeats itself… This guy was everyones last choice…
This guy can coach. And build defenses. Bottom line.
Ha. Seriously, this guy?
Good luck b/c if Shciano worked FOR him previously he is going to try and rule the roost

I agree this guy wil probably stab you in the back b/c Schiano used to report to him.
I’d never hire my ex-boss
Butch Davis is a good defensive mind. For the Buccaneers this is a solid hire. Nobody is letting their assistants talk to the Buccaneers so Schiano is being handicapped right from the get go. Thats why it isn’t such a good idea to wait too long to hire a coach.
I think some Rutgers fans forget how horrible that program was before Schiano got there he is a good football coach. I don’t know how he will do in the pros but he is a good coach.
And Cleveland thought he was going to fix their problems too
now if jesus will walk on water a 2nd time something similiar in making freeman a franchise qb….we might have something working……
Just when I was starting to really lose faith, I see this. Took long enough and I’m a little surprised he’s not the DC, but a great defensive mind like Davis is valuable regardless of his title. I would assume they’ll bring in a successful college guy as the actual DC, and Davis’ main role will be to teach him to adjust to the NFL.
it’s nice to know the 9th guy down on the list took the job
.
28 million under the cap
.
He should be the GM, because he knows tons about paying players.
Glad to see the normal emotional , negative minded folks are giving their 3 cents they should be giving the hard working waitress they bring down every lunchtime when they also bitch about the food they then inhale. Schiano will bring together a respected staff….then it’s his job to LEAD them. This is what he does have the capability of doing. As Derrick Brooks said, most of Dungys first staff were unknowns and now most are Very high up in the NFL ! calm down folks, if you happen to like the Bucs.
As many points as the Bucs gave up………… I think they need to draft a goalie.
Let’s keep the faith fans ! We have a DC unit of sorts , now we need an OC and get the Glazers to keep the promise to spend in free agency. If they are serious about making the Bucs winners again it has to be done in free agency.

you have it backwards. unc was just above average under butch, and the guy has never beat NC STATE!!! and just in case some of yall forgot that we landed on the moon, about 10 unc players a year are drafted in the first, second, and third rounds.
great game day coach, though….right
Very glad that the Bucs finally hired an assistant coach with head coaching experience. The guys who got fired from their head coaching jobs typically, sorry Raheem, got those positions because they were great assistants.
None of this matters though unless the Glazer’s break out the checkbook and get more than a shiny new punter!
Our owners became too excieted about the other “football” and became the second coming of the Hugh Culverhouse era.
But here’s to hoping!!!
It’s hard to imagine anyone coveting Butch Davis.
I don’t normally read the comments sections here but there sure are some people posting that are uneducated when it comes to football.
Butch has always been reported as their #1 choice as a DC. Recent reports are explaining why he wasn’t brought in earlier as their DC, he’s still getting paid by UNC. If he signs anywhere as a coach, he looses that money. This assistant role allows him to double dip.
Butch and Schiano have produced NFL caliber players while coaching in college. I no doubts they can’t improve and mold the young men playing for the Bucs into better football players.
