@ pettergriffen,

Yes, I've heard of free agency. So what you're saying is the Raiders can overpay for one of the top tier free agents, there's really only 2 on the market IMO, in a bidding war or sign the likes of Kelly Jennings or Pacman Jones. What a great upgrade that would be.

Once again, ronlm, I'm in agreement with you and a lot of other comments on here. Routt was our best CB; all of his P.I.s were in the 4th quarter; he was overpaid and yes our secondary is a mess right now. Good thing it's Feb and the next game isn't until Sept.

When I add up what McKenzie saw in his secondary at GB; and how Dennis Allen ran Denver and NO's secondaries; and the fact that OAK is not going to be the ATM for free agents anymore, I think we'll be okay by the time training camp comes around. The only thing I'd like to know is how much zone DEN played last year. When we played them, it's hard to tell what D an opponent is in because our WRs run routes like they're blindfolded second-graders.

No ball skills -just sticks his arms and hands up without turning his head around EVERY TIME. Former track & field standout at Houston University. Raw prospect when the Raiders took him in the 2nd round. Limited development in his time in Oakland. Flagged constantly for PI - usually for not turning his head around and playing the ball. Definitely not worth the money. Al was probably hopeful that Stanford would step it up after Nam left... Not so much.

Reggie studied the tape and made the right call.

For those who think Routt is good, I'm guessing you don't watch many Raider games.
For the most part, if Routt wasn't giving up receptions, he was drawing a PI or holding flag. With a few illegal contacts thrown in periodically.
I thought it was insane to give a scrub like him such a contract. Apparently someone in the new regime agrees...

I like this move. It makes the Raiders corner position weaker, but I think by seasons end it will be an addition by subtraction.

What I don't agree with, which a lot of people commenting here are saying, is the need to boot Rolondo McClain right now. I completely agree that he has been a disappointment, but I don't think you give up quite yet on a player that's just going into his third year.

It's a new regime, and maybe they can find a way to utilize him in a scheme that works. I mean he WAS working in a Chuck Bresnahan defense.

As far as his off the field problems. Let those resolve themselves and see where he's at afterward. This kid has the talent. There's a role for him on the Raiders where he can be productive. I think this will be his final year with the Raiders to prove it.

For those pining over Routt, here's the skinny on this cat: He's a 7 year vet that was given a boat load of money too where you got minimal return on your investment. Even Chris Johnson was able to take the starting position from him the year before Aso left. He has terrible ball skills, has alot of trouble playing with his back to the quarterback and has poor instincts when the ball is in flight. He's not a very good tackler and for his price tag, he needs to do the aforementioned much better than he did.

He's had plenty of time to develop his craft and played behind one of the best corners in the league (Aso). At this stage of his career he's not going to get much better. This is when he should be hitting his stride, instead he was repeatedly targeted by opposing offenses because his weaknesses are so glaring. Majority of his INT's came because he was "facing" the qb, not with his back turned. And the most telling observation: The most productive player in the secondary has no where near the athletic ability, but know's how to play the ball(Matty G.) And didn't cost nearly as much.

I have a feeling that McKenzie and Allen are getting their point across before they even meet with players. And for those saying he's the best corner on the team, have you actually seen our secondary? Good Ole Hue tore our secondary a new one in the post presser after the Diego meltdown, and he didn't mix words. He specifically pointed a finger at the secondary, "can cover, can't tackle", etc..etc.

Stay tuned Nation, more "fat" will be trimmed from this bloated roster. You have too much young talent on this team that's really not costing.....yet!! Also, the way NFL contracts work, these guys have to meet certain dates for the money to come into play and I'm sure this freed up the necessary funds to actively resign Bush. Bush or Routt??? Bush or Routt?? If you can't figure this one out, I feel for you.

This is simple people, the raiders are not going to overpay anymore for players. With the new leadership, people will actually want to play for the raiders and come to oakland. Translation, the raiders will not have to overpay to get them. Routt has potential, but he is a headcase who created too many penalties and he is overpaid. I trust McKenzie can get free agents for less than what Routt was making and free up cap space.

"Wow they way overpaid last him year, but he is still the best CB on the roster."

My response to this is just because you think he was the best CB on the roster, that doesn't make him good.

17 penalties on him this year alone.
Burned for 9 TD's.

Asking about "HIS" stats after a game loss? This is not a team player, that is a "ME" player.

I say good riddance.

Routt wasn’t worth $10 mil per year, but still one of the better CBs in the league. I hope Chubby Checker knows what he’s doing.

Amazing move, freed up alot of money, got rid of one of the penalty bugs , and got rid of some of the"losing" cancer ... Id like to see Reggie continue to completely clean house, and bring in effective lower-teir and a couple higher-teir free agents and get ready for the playoffs this year.. I am totally seeing Reggie&DA's vision come to fruition here..Johnson, Henderson, Huff, Seymour, Bush or McFadden... " Could " be next ... no job is safe, time to build a real program now like the patriots have, like the giants have ... its not about winning for a season or 2 , its about sustained winning over a decade or more

Good. Let the rebuilding of the defense begin. I said it before, and I'll said it again. Oakland would have been a play-off team if the defense had been even mediocre. As for Routt, he should have been cut after his San Diego post game comments on TV. I saw and heard the man say that he didn't think the defense was a problem, and that it was a pretty good defense. Sorry Stan, it's not a pretty good defense when you're at the bottom of the league in just about every statistical category, you consistently can't get off the fied, and 99 yard drives are no problem for the opposition. Good riddance. We can do just as good or better for a lot less money.

I don't think he is worth $10m a year, but releasing a player that has a portion guaranteed may or may not be a good idea. If they are still going to get a $10m cap hit in 2012, it may be worth keeping the player another year until that guaranteed money has been paid. All of you recomending cutting underachieving players may sound great, but if your going to have all this dead-money hitting your cap, you are now essentially eating up cap space with no players to fill a need. So if the choice is an average corner being signed for $2m and you have a $10m cap hit from cutting Rhoutt = $12m or keep Rhoutt and have a $10m hit for one more year, I keep Rhoutt. My guess is Reggie knows what he is doing more than all of us knuckleheads, but some of his moves have me concerned. ie Knapp. Also, for all of you knocking Carson Palmer, remember when he joined the team and 6 of his interceptions came within 10 days of being signed. He also threw some beautiful passes that I haven't seen a raider qb complete in many years. I think he will prove his worth next season and hopefully he won't have the feeling that he has to do it every drive because they will have a better D.

It sounds like the Packer way, they cleaned house when Thompson and McCarthy came in. In part though, it was due to cap problems.

However, some of the unpopular moves were:

Cutting Darren Sharper and Mike Wahle. Not re-signing ProBowl guard Marco Rivera. Not negotiating with Javon Walker who was under his rookie contract

Sharper was good, but replaced with Nick Collins that year.

Wahle was also still good and went to a ProBowl with Carolina. However, Carolina overpaid so they cut him a couple years later.

Rivera got hurt and was out of the league in 2 years.

Javon Walker blew out his knee one game into the McCarthy era. The Packers traded him for a 2nd rounder the next offseason, and that pick through some trades became Darryn College.
