The reason more contracts arent heavily incentive laden is complicated.

1. Salary cap minimum expenditures state they MUST spend a certain % of their income on salaries. Its hard to get all of your players to fit in that small window between minimum and maximum if you dont know what their total salary will be until incentives have been met or missed.
2. The salary cap would be difficult to manage if all your players have contracts that the team cant plan for until the end of the year.
3. Players want guaranteed money. If they get hurt, incentives arent going to pay their bills. So they say “show me the money…and now, not later, so I can complain about that contract, and ask for more in 2 years time again.”

Desean Jackson killed his chance at the big contract by playing afraid last year. Steve Smith was underpaid and then tore his knee.

Don’t be the “loyal soldier”. If you play on the $400k this year and get injured, the Giants will not give you the big bucks based upon 2011. Dumb to risk having to live the rest of your life off of $400K. If you want to get your family out of Paterson, this is your big chance to take care of you and them for the rest of their lives. Its just business and I for one won’t begrudge Vic for doing what he has to do for his family.

Im an Eagles fan. I hate the Giants. I dont like Victor Cruz. (Thanks Nnamdi ) I normally end up on the owners side of arguments, because players tend to be out of whack when they make demands. And I hate to see anyone under an existing contract whine that they arent making enough money, close after signing a piece of paper. (See T.O. in Philly)

I must say though…that was a well thought out argument, and well stated on the side of the player. You actually made me slightly change my mind, and think about the matter in a different manner.

Pay him with incentives! Nothing more nothing less! Make sure he works for his paycheck

I agree completely with you. I would give him a little more base salary for next year loaded with incentives! Not like the QB or offense is going to change much next year. I think incentive based contracts are really the way to go especially if I were an owner or GM. For the player you also have to be considerate for the injuries as well.

DeSean Jackson was fat out lied to by the Eagles GM who said that if came back to camp he’d be taken care of, and not while he was holding out. They said they would do it after the restructered Vick’s contract which ate up too much cap room. If I was DeSean, I’d give the middle finger to the Eagles and walk. They did him dirty. Of course, he didn’t exactly help his cause much either.

Set a base salary for each position and the number of years played.
Have escalater/bonus’s for performance, (ie. number of tackles, yards receiving, td’s, etc )

The player gets paid for what they do
The team pays for what they get

Have a bad year, get a small paycheck, have a monster year have a monster paycheck.

Everybody should be happy….but sadly they probably wont.

1. Extend TC
2. Lock up Nicks
3. Resign Terrell Thomas
4. Lock up Cruz
5. Resolve Osi Issue (regardless of outcome)
6. Draft OL and LB help.

He needs to be careful though. If he elects to sit out, Eli/Giants offense can quickly turn someone else into a slot WR star. He did it with Steve Smith and he did it with Victor Cruz.

One good year dosen’t make you a HOF just ask Eli

Saying your worth more than the least amount any NFL player is receiving doesn’t necessarily mean you think you’re a HOF’er. The guy was asked point blank if he thinks he’s underpaid and after breaking a franchise record he responded honestly.

He has 2 more years on his deal. He didn’t start the talk, he should just play, I think that he will.

That being said, the Giants should give him a little bump, not to premier prices but maybe to 1.5 a year or something like that for another year or 2. That would be fair to both sides. It will show that they appreciate his work, and give him a chance to show consistency.

Personally, I think that he will be great for a long time which sucks because then my team will have to face him twice a year as long as he is with the Giants.

When Victor Cruz holds out of training camp, and becomes a distraction to the team like Desean Jackson did to the Eagles, then you can make that comparison.
