Teams already showing interest in Stanford Routt

Johnny Knox, Stanford Routt AP

Released former Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt will take advantage of his jump on the rest of the free agent market.

Routt’s agent told Josina Anderson of ESPN.com that Routt will visit the Bills and Titans in the coming days. It sounds like the Bills will meet him first Sunday and Monday. Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports the Titans visit is likely to happen early next week.

Early visits won’t necessarily result in a quick deal. Teams may not be ready to break the bank this far before free agency starts in full, so Routt might have to take a bit of discount to sign now. Cornerback is a deep position in free agency this year.

The early interest from both teams is interesting. On paper, cornerback is one of Buffalo’s more well-stocked positions. Tennessee could look to Routt as a backup plan if Cortland Finnegan leaves via free agency. Perhaps this is a sign the Titans don’t plan to use the franchise tag on Finnegan.

The Steelers DESPERATELY need to upgrade at CB.

I hope they free some money and go after one of these proven guys. It’s not our way, but you never know.

The hell with the Steelers the Patriots need him way more.

It makes sense. He’s not a bad player but for what the Raiders were paying him it made absolutely no sense to keep him. The Bills are smart for going after him because as the Broncos and Jets found out playing the Patriots twice, every defensive back active on game day needs to be able to cover on every play. Teams in the AFC East cannot possible have enough depth at corner with the Patriots likely to sign Brandon Lloyd to go with Branch, Gronk, Hernandez, and Welker.

Another slightly better then average Cb to get overpaid by a desparate team.

Having Routt on the roster would also provide some serious leverage in any contract talks…

any one asking to have their team sign him has not seen a lick of his game tape.

take it from a raider fan. this guy has a lot of weaknesses. hes a #2 cb at best.

led the league in cb penalties and passing touchdowns allowed. have fun breaking the bank for him. you’ll get more outta a 6th rounder for less.

mj i hope you didnt think this kid was “great” because one good break on the ball. look at the games – he has his back to the qb all the time.

his “look at my statistics” attitude also had to go. that crap is only for the cream of the crop and hes a reserve at best.

only reason he gets respect is hes simply a raider CB who has practiced nothing but man for years.

Why hasn’t Dallas jumped on this guy?

  13. quittsburghstoolers says: Feb 10, 2012 9:19 AM

Depends on what Finnegan wants from the Titans.

If he settles for the same kind of dough
Routt will, then maybe he comes back.

If not, then I wouldn’t be shocked to see Routt in Tennessee…

  14. dennis2488 says: Feb 10, 2012 9:21 AM

i predict he will be signed by a non-contender

  15. raiderlyfe510 says: Feb 10, 2012 9:27 AM

The Penalty Magnet is in high demand?

Oh and Dallas hasnt jumped on him, maybe because Rob Ryan knows him better than most and doesnt want to give away free chunk- yardage to teams.

  17. deconjonesbitchslap says: Feb 10, 2012 9:31 AM

the question is, who is coaching up these raider corners, or who is finding them?

  18. dkrauss93 says: Feb 10, 2012 9:32 AM

Is there a slight chance the Jets go after him, sign him and put him as the slot corner or no? If they do they have 3 options:
    1. Trade Kyle Wilson
    2. Cut Kyle Wilson
    3. Move Kyle Wilson to saftey

  19. micronin127 says: Feb 10, 2012 9:33 AM

His contract which was huge and back loaded probably smartly called for a roster bonus to be paid that would essentially guarantee a huge cap hit this year.

The Raiders didn’t want to overpay and Routt gets to hit free agency early which means he gets another big signing bonus.

Lots of teams can use a starting CB, so expect him to establish the market.

  20. ssmraiders says: Feb 10, 2012 9:33 AM

Why is everyone saying how did we cut him? I hope my team picks him up? The guy was TERRIBLE last year!!! Responsible for 98% of the pass Interference calls against the raiders. I love Routt but he was awful. We need to keep cutting big contracts. Reggie is for real. The team that picks up Routt will have alot of 15 yarders against. He couldnt cover ANYTHING so he would always take the 15 instead of the 70 yard TD! Terrible. Wish him luck and wish the team that signs him luck. Raider make over is coming. Dont be surprised when Seymour gets cut next and Tom Kelly is traded for a draft pick. Hell, Michael Huff isnt even safe yet. ONE NATION, RAIDER NATION

  21. cjpunk15 says: Feb 10, 2012 9:34 AM

Stanford Routt gave more TDs than anybody at his position last year… throw in 17 penalities on top of that… Yeah that screams shutdown corner to me.

  22. AlohaMrHand says: Feb 10, 2012 9:37 AM

of course the Bills want him, they love getting these overrated players that have maybe one or two good moments on the field but otherwise make more mistakes than the right play.

  24. thekingofnewyork says: Feb 10, 2012 9:45 AM

Bills? Well stocked at corner? Give me a break. McKelvin and Florence are the worst starting corners in the league.

  25. whynotusecommonsense says: Feb 10, 2012 9:52 AM

    mjbulls45,

You’re right, Routt did “blanket” the other teams receivers last year. He was on them so tight he was flagged a league leading 17 times. 17 times he gave the other team an automatic first down. He was personally responsible for extending drives that lead to points. He has always had a lot of flags thrown his way. He’s aggressive and it costs him and the team. He’s gotta play smarter.

Oh, his “burn rate” jumped significantly and he gave up a whopping 8 TD’s through the air too.

Not saying it didn’t surprise me, but I’m glad to see the scholarships are on the way out and the Raiders will be spending money more wisely. Routt is a decent corner, but not a $10 million per year corner.

Panthers need CB the most in the league.

    Stat from ESPN:

*Panthers starting CB Captain Munnerlyn was THE WORST starter at his position this year with 74% of the passes thrown his way going as completions. That is rediculous. And hes a midget, listed at 5’9″ but hes really like 5’7″. He has GOT TO GO.

The Steelers alreay have one of the best CBs in the league in Ike Taylor. Taylor was 4th best in QB rating on passes thrown against him. Holding opposing QBs to a 54.8 rating.

Chris Gamble had one of the best years by a CB last year. Gamble was 3rd in QB rating on passes thrown against him. Holding opposing QBs to a 53.3 rating.

Maybe both of these teams need a better 2nd CB. But they have a very strong number one CB.

If he lands somewhere that has a staff who can teach him how to pplay the right way, he might be good. If he lands somewhere that has probleemss coaching up young CBs, he is doomed.

  29. mjkelly77 says: Feb 10, 2012 10:41 AM

Cortland Finnegan has already expressed interest in rejoining Jim Schwartz. I think he also likes the rush put on by the Lions’ front four. Should make him a much better CB than he already is.

  30. raiderlyfe510 says: Feb 10, 2012 11:27 AM

LOL who said that “The Penalty Magnet” blanketed his WR?

It must have been a yellow blanket made out of all the flags that he attracted during his Raider career.

Patsies fans like to talk so much about how they get/got over on all their big deals, but it sure hasn’t helped them truly get anywhere. Truth of the matter is that the Pats will be good til Saint Tom hangs up the cleats, and then will fade away into distant memory…

Whether they are ignored or not does not effect the rating of opposing when throwing against them. If you actually look at the numbers you can see teams threw quite a bit at Taylor compared to other CBs in the league. Less so on Gamble. But when thrown against both CBs were outstanding.
