Top safety Barron expected to miss Combine following surgery

Nick Saban, Mark Barron AP

The draftniks are in agreement: Alabama safety Mark Barron looks like the top player at his position in the upcoming draft.

The projected first round pick will not be able to show off his stuff at the Combine in two weeks, however, because of double hernia surgery. Tony Pauline of SI.com and DraftInsider.net reports that Barron is expected to miss eight weeks at most from the time the surgery occurred.

Using that timeline, it sounds like Barron’s camp is confident he’ll be able to work out sometime before the Draft. Barron went No. 30 in Silva’s first mock draft of the year over at Rotoworld.

Maybe he’ll end up falling to the Pats at 27 or 31, but I think that’s doubtful even with this news. Would be a major boon for that secondary.

And perfect for the Patriots who like to draft players with injury histories (e.g. Terrence Wheatley, Ras-I Dowling, etc…)

We love shopping in the scratch-and-dent bin.

He projects on just about every mock draft I’ve seen (take them with a grain of salt) in that 30 range. Some drafts have the Pats taking him at 27 and his teammate (Hightower) with the 31st pick.

    ^^^^^^^^

It’s Hernia surgery, not a structural issue like a knee or ankle.

Also how did drafting a TE who missed his senior season to a weight lifting injury work out for the Pats? He only turned into the best TE in the league last year.

Could be a major steal for someone if he slips to the early 2nd.

I don’t get why this guy and Hightower arn’t projected in the top ten with their teammate Kirkpatrick. Bama could have 4 top 20 picks from that defense and IMO Lester is going to be a steal in the late 2 early 3 rd. as much as I think bama being champs is a big fraud, I gotta say that defense was one of the best I have ever seen. They would have been top ten in the nfl.

Please Andy and Howie draft someone from Alabama or anyone who is “bigger than they are supposed to be” at a defensive position.

EXACTLY what I was thinking bmue! Hoping the Pats trade down from 27 right in front of us again. He’d fit well with either team.
